Title: Drinking Alcohol
Post by JimH on Aug 23rd, 2006, 2:07pm
Dear fellow clusterheads,
I am a weekend warrior with alcohol and very much look forward to a cold beer or six  :) after work on Fridays and Saturdays. While in CH season I take about 25mg of Imitrex (I break one pill into 4's) PRIOR to drinking and then another one if a shodow creeps up and I'm usually good for the evening. I have O2 also ready just in case...
Does anyone have another method?
Jim

No.....
I try not to let these buggers control my life and anything I can do to live a normal life, I do.
I know alcohol triggers them, so does smoking.
I don't smoke cigatrettes, pot, but I really enjoy having a coldy while with friends watching a game, fishing, etc.

I guess I'm one of the fortunate souls who doesn't have an alcohol trigger for my CH.  However, if I did, I'd definitely be avoiding it like the f'ing plague while it was my "season", as you so aptly put it.  While I can completely understand the compulsion to want to live a "normal" lifestyle, I believe that approach crosses the line into nutsville, bro!

Sorry, if that sounds a tad brutal, but my "shadow" is beginning to burgeon into something more intense and it's time to head home and medicate............... [smiley=bash.gif]

A quick shot of rum,  no beer,  and lots of coffee!  A buzz and awake to enjoy it!

For me:

1 Beer - glass empty = go get another head.

Stout or wine - glass empty = go get another drink.

Go figure.

what i do on the nights where i cant avoid it (ie mates birthday etc) is have a beer as soon as i finish work, suffer with a ch for an hour and then im good to go for the rest of the night.

once iv had one like that i dont seem to have another for the rest of the night no matter what i do.

And as for avoiding alcohol when im in season . . .
No chance.
Im chronic so im always in season but im gonna live a normal life as i can . .

My sentiments exactly; weve got it, we deal with it, life goes on.

Thanks for the feedback guys....
I'll try Stout and also dealing with the first blow of the night and see if the rest of the evening is pain free.
Best,
Jim

Good luck with that.

Personally, when I'm in cycle, I'd rather point a half-loaded .38 at my big toe and pull the trigger--hoping I'll get lucky, and not hit the cylinder with a round in it.

You must *really* like a cold one.  No offense meant.

The only alcohol I drink right now is in my liquid kudzu extract.

One beer, and I can count on getting hit. I agree with the .38 pointed at the foot. Only mine has only one empty cylinder. 1/2 glass of WHITE wine, and I will probably be safe. Same with a Bloody Mary. GOD I love those when I go out to eat. But only one. Other than that, alcohol is only a memory. By the way, my last bottle of wine lasted me over a year.  Dick

A year old, opened bottle of wine might just trigger a cluster alone....

On the CB site they recommend soaking RC Seeds in wine for two hours before consuming.  Alcohol is a major trigger for hubby, and though we used to really enjoy consuming a bottle almost every evening, he/we've had no alcohol since March.

He dosed on the RC Seeds last Friday night (18 of them).  He decided as long as he was going to soak them in alcohol, might as well be the good stuff - so we used a bottle of Dom.  We then consumed the rest of the bottle (don't know what the "instructions" are as far as that goes, lol!).  He didn't get any hits and had no trip level activity, but did enjoy the champagne.  :)

Don't know that I'd recommend this as a method for drinking alcohol without getting hits, especially as many people get post-dose hits from seeds or whatever.  I also don't know if it works with beer or not.  But he did get a little more sleep than usual that night, so that was a plus.

Just FYI.

Hi Laurie,
What are RC Seeds?

RC Seeds are Rivea Corymbosa seeds, or ololiuqui, or Mexican morning glory seeds, which contain LSA. See:
http://www.clusterbusters.com/faqlsa.htm

The seeds can be soaked in wine or other alcoholic beverage of your choice, but they don't have to be. Soaking in water apparently works just as well.

The worst of my headaches are so bad that when I am in a spell I don't touch a drop of beer for 4 months!  I quit cold turkey at the very beginning of the spell.  It just isn't worth it.

I'm apparently one of the lucky chronics who doesn't get affected by alcohol usually.

While I was episodic, It would hit me bigtime at the first taste of alcohol but otherwise leave me be for the rest of the evening.

Now that I'm chronic I'm more sensitive to the triggers that affects migraine people. I don't know If I have some sort of wierd hybrid of CH/Migraine, but beer doesn't give me a headache unless I'm into a heavy shadow or CH period. On the other hand, chocolate is a no go for me. Don't drink wine, so I can't comment on that, but Tuborg and Carlsberg doesn't bring forth the sledgehammer, luckily.
