How soon after consuming a food or what ever, will trigger head pain? Thanks for the input.

Hi "Sophia" ;)

I personally believe that for something to be a trigger that it would have to bring about an attack in moments.

One can not say that something triggers an attack unless everytime it is consumed that an attack occurs.

There may be something else that is coinceidental or happening concurrently.

This will vary from person to person, and be different for different kinds of triggers.

Some, for who alcohol is a trigger, can feel a shadow w shortly after consuming, or not get hit till just after they go to bed. My Dad would get hit within 30 minutes of red wine. Me, I get hit, about 15-30 minutes after I get to bed after drinking.

Aromatic triggers, in my opinion, have a greater likelihood of being a quick trigger. I'm very sensitive, in cycle, to floral aromatics and will feel one coming within minutes of smelling certain aromas.

Exercise is my most frequent trigger and it is almost like clockwork, 15 minutes after completing 35+ minutes of hard cardio exercise. So, if I'm still running, I get hit at about 50 minutes, or if I've stopped, in the same time frame. It's uncanny and is a hard one to overcome when it comes to exercise motivation. Those ones are generally easily beaten back with O2 however.

All answers to my questions are of use to me.  The only instant trigger I get is if the side of my head gets a cold blast of air. Happened to me the other day from my own air conditioner moving furniture near it. Winter time I make sure never to go out without my head covered. Those are instant triggers, I'm wondering about triggers that may not be instant for me.   Keep up the input my friends,  :-*

Hi Sophia, I think this is just another area in which we all differ.
I have no food triggers, I get hit immediately after certain triggers; such as bending over too far, or getting sunlight (or strobe lights)  in my cluster eye. When I was chronic and in "normal" cycle, alcohol posed no problems for me. If I was in high cycle, I'd get hit within 1 hour of drinking. Now, that I'm mostly PF, but still having some activity... I find that drinking alcohol will make the following day pretty miserable.  :-/

My main trigger is relaxation-as soon as I sit down and relax I get hit.  If I sit at the edge of the chair, in an uncomfortable position-so I can't relax-I'm usually okay for 30-40 minutes-but then I gotta move around.  So, knitting, crocheting, reading, watching a movie, watching a whole TV show... all are totally our for me.

if im on a headache day ( i dont have cycles, im chronic) then a beer or any other alcohol will bring on a hit after about 10 minutes. Guarenteed

Hey sophia,

I find that my reactions usually come anywhere between ten minutes to 24 hours after a trigger. Or that one thing may not trigger it, but a series of things. The lastest one that really confused me was I was sat talking to my parents and laughing and within about 5 minutes I had a headache. It was really weird!!! [smiley=huh.gif]

Stay  away from anything fun or that's bad for you, ie: sleep, sex, t.v., salt, cold, hot, sweets, beer, and caffiene.  Drink lots of caffiene to rid yourself of ch, go figure!  You're gonna get it no matter what, I say enjoy life and be merry!!!

My only trigger is alcohol. When in cycle, five to ten munutes after drinking any alcohol, BAM!

I'm with you Steve.  Any Alcohol AT ALL and in 15 minutes it is a #10.  Also, 45 minutes after going into a DEP sleep I get one.  Every FRICKING night.

Exactly the same. Gone from getting up to 6 hits a day last week but still getting that one hit 30 -45 mins after I fall asleep! How do yo get rid of that one???


currently on pred 12X5mg for 10 days (currently on 5th day) then 6X5mg for 6 days

Verapamil started 2X120mg on 27th/7, now on 2X240mg from 2/8 two days ago.

Also taking 750mg Magnesium spread throughout the day.

Had one night 2/8 two days ago where I didn't wake up during the night & get one, but then I fell asleep at half 5 in the afternoon, woke up & ......bang!

Not complaining too much as last couple of weeks was hell with up to 6 hits, but as I say its still that one bloody headache just after I fall asleep, just woke up with a kip7, just want to get rid of that one headache after I fall asleep  [smiley=huh.gif]

Alcohol (in cycle), REM sleep, and Spring and Fall.

I'm episodic, off cycle nothing gets me, on cycle:
Alcohol, whiskey within 30 minutes, beer and wine within an hour. Faster on an empty tummy, a little slower if I just ate. My only other ttriggers are stress and sleep disruptions which have no real start or end time so I can't tell what the onset is!!! Wishing you peace and some pain free time.

Barometric pressure changes

Wine, even one sip, will make me worse for 3 days

Verapamil and Lamical make me much worse

I will have less intense or no hits during stress but will get hit immediately and hard as soon as the stress is over. That can be physical, intellectual, or emotional stress, it doesn't matter.

I can't say that junk food is a trigger but messed-up blood sugar is. Having a quick sugar fix will help to end an attack but may cause a rebound attack later.

Combine some late night stress, junkfood, and an oncoming storm and I have an almost surefire recipe for a KIP-10.

Food can take up to 3 to 5 hours... but can be as quick as a 15 minutes.

Certain smells can trigger in a few minutes.

I agree with you. A smell likes perfume, cigarette, and etc..........

To this date, I am still afraid getting trigger. I have had too many of those in the past. I have been experiencing pain free for about 1.5 months since taking medication.

I am the SAME as Kathy. The above could have been written by me, everything, except for the lamactil (never used). Also, verapamil was a treasured friend until just recently. Now seems to be causing hits, sigh. Looks like another trip to the neuro.

Oh, and caffeine at the WRONG time will cause hit in <1 hr. Welding fumes (especially zinc) < 10 min (apparently, thankfully not true for Jonny). There's a bunch more but I have gotten so used to avoiding them in cycle it is second nature and they don't spring to mind. Varying time delays.

Back years ago I could START drinking a beer and would get hit before I finished it. I quit drinking beer for years and then one day I had one and NOTHING.... it just didn't trigger them anymore. Go figure that one.

One time MSG triggered one and then nothing. I eat a lot of Chinese Food so ...... only once.

BUT the barometer - now that's another matter. I've been watching it lately real close and when it gets over 30 I'm usually ok, but when it gets down in the 29s = I get hit.

Like someone's already sAid -- We're all different .....

Same here.  When I tell people at work that I get cluster headaches they act like I am a liar since I almost always get them at home.  Once I relax, or yes, the dreaded REM sleep, I will get one.  Who knew that I would actually look forward to being extremely busy or stressed out...
