Title: Cheeseburger in Clusterville
Post by Dave on May 22nd, 2006, 9:08pm
I recall reading once red meat being cited as a trigger.

However, in having charted my headaches in the past and in having considered dietary factors, red meat seems to actually have an ameliorating effect for me.  Headaches would be weaker on days when I had red meat for lunch or dinner.

In fact, I was having some kip 1 shadows earlier this evening, and then I ate a big juicy hamburger, and I feel great now.

Maybe it's all a coincidence... but I sure frickin' hope not!

Wholy crap...after the day I had today, that word is making my head hurt!   ;;D  Glad that a buger worked...wouldn't it be the sh*t if the "cure" to this damn thing of ours was something stupid like not enough cheese whiz or something... [smiley=laugh.gif]

I did a big fat London Broil for dinner, medium rare, God I hope it's not a trigger! Seriously though, have never seen a relationship between red meat and HA's!

I don't believe red meat does but some people, including me, knows that a very high salt intake do result in triggering an attack.

I have a fast metabolism and tend to get feeling crappy when I don't eat frequently.  Now that I am in cycle, I have noticed that I get shadows when I get really hungry, and they go away after a good meal.   Last week I went too long without eating and the shadow went bad on me, so at least for me, food/blood sugar level seems to be tied to CHs.

[smiley=huh.gif]Actually I'm pretty sure that dietary triggers are limited to Alcohol and possibly the same thing that might snap some of us out of a Cluster if its taken fast enough-really hot spices!
If food triggers anyone its usually Migraine or because they have some Blood Sugar issues! IMHO

I'm going to disagree with you Pappy. I've noticed the salt thing as well. Also, when I'm in a cycle, MSG is the kiss of death! I notice the pain is much more severe if I have a big dinner, so I often skip or eat light, plain food for dinner. The only good thing about a cycle...I usually drop ten or twenty pounds. :)

Nitrates or nitrates are highly suspect - nitroglycerin, alcohol, viagra and anything that increases nitric oxide can trigger. And processed meats (especially bacon, ham, and sausage) can contains lots of nitrates that are converted to nitric oxide.

Yeah, but they're so damn tasty and come from a magical animal! ;;D  Never had a problem with the pork products, or red meat.  MSG doesn't really do much for me either, suprisingly.  Going to have to try that burger thing, though...

What Krtman said..........when on cycle I can't let myself get really hungry or I'll trigger an attack. It's funny how when on cycle any extreme, not enough sleep, too much sleep, too hungry, POW you get bit!

It seems to me that you are saying that no matter what your going to get hit, no?

In 30 years I never stopped anything in fear of getting hit, cause I knew no matter what I was going to get hit ;;D

Edit to add: I was chronic that whole time so I didnt give a shit about much....LOL!

One reason I think red meat may help is that it is high in heme iron.  This helps carry more O2 to the cells.

I dont know about that, Dave....but I eat steak 3-4 times a week, im a grilling fool ;;D

I have found nothing that triggers me in 31 years..(PF for the last year)

I have only two triggers - 2:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

Never found any food, drink, stress level, lighting or temperature to bring on an attack.  That's what makes this weird syndrome so unique - we're all different.

Viagra?  - Oh, I just can't bring myself to say it... ::)

Anyway, food is a trigger for Richard when he's in cycle.  He's okay if he eats early in the day, but if he eats much at all in the afternoon or evening, the hits are much harder.  He dropped 15 pounds this last cycle (which looks like it's ending - yippee!)

;;D Maybe its being chronic for 36 years now that has given me a different slant. Tried the Migraine diet for 5 years, didn't slow them a bit. Been off it for 20 and as long as I dont drink alcohol or watch flashing lights I just get my usual 7 or so attacks a day.
I use to think Nitrates were a trigger. but not any longer. Again I guess its different when you have some down time.  I love red meat but I dont think its benefical.  Red meat, Cheese and chloresterol go hand in hand though                              Pappy

I guess I'm one of the fortunate ones. When I'm on cycle, if I keep 1200m mg of lithium in my system, avoid the big triggers, (for me alcohol, stress, sleep disruptions) I can sneak by with one to two attacks a week. I almost hate to put that in print, the beast will read it and morph on me!!!!! PFDAN to the whole damned bunch of you.

Someone else can wish for World Peace. I now wish that Pizza was the world's leading treatment for Cluster Headache. But I suppose the Cheeseburger treatment would be almost as good...... (I love this community -- we talk about the funniest sh&t)

You got that right! Pizza, with meat, 3 or 4 different kinds. And at least 3 different kinds of cheese. And none of that girlie stuff like pinapple.
Screw World Peace. Wage Pizza!  ;;D

Hey Dave, no true cheeseburger aficionado would ever put veggies, except onions, on a burger. If you want a salad, order a salad. Or you’re out of the Cheeseburger Club.  ;)
And never, ever, put mayo or salad dressing on any kind of burger. Only sissies do that. Catsup (or Katsup) is the only condiment allowed.
:D

Dave,
Jimmy Buffet at his best-cheeseburger in paradise, heaven on earth with onion slice not too particular not to precise... ;;D
Oh my gosh, I'm time tripping to the "daze"-spent alot of time in Key West-and yes, did eat cheeseburger in paradise, but Sloopy Joe's Rum Runners were definite triggers.
Jonny, you're right (again ::)) if we live, walking on egg-shells, watching out for the next hit, we're not really living.  However, most of us are clinical and want to know what triggers, what stops, what magic might work.  Seems to me someone even mentioned tying a frozen banana round one's head ;;D
PFDAN y'all,
Kathy (officially chronic since March 2005, episodic since 1985)

By the way, I actually was quite serious when I suggested that red meat seems to have some benefit.
