Title: will i ever be able to have a drink again??
Post by gardengal on Feb 24th, 2006, 7:03pm
My neuro. said I wouldn't drink if I were you. I know in a cycle it is dangerous, but ever?? I miss a drink on a Sat. night out. I have read of people loading up on med.s and drinking during a cycle too. Does that work? I have been a hermit for 2 month now.

Not everyone is triggered by alcohol.

I am.

Out of cycle shouldnt be a problem.

No need to be a hermit either, have a soda on me.

I drink when I'm off cycle, no problem. My favorites are wild turkey, crown royal and gentleman jacks. (making myself slobber cuz I'm on cycle) When I'm on cycle I can't even touch beer or I get slammed. Fortunately I'm episodic cuz if I miss my drink.

egads Guiseppi, I have about 4 bottles here you can HAVE.  They are just way too dry for my taste.

After much trial, and trial and trial, I have decided nothing quenches my thirst like Cella's Lambrusco. ;;D

and yes, I know you are, but what am I? ;)

I am one who has to be careful all the time with alcohol. Doesnt seem to matter what it is. Never on high cycle, but with care on lower cycles I can have a beer or glass of wine. Over the years, I have learned not to ever go past 2 in the whole evening, but prefer to stay safe so have one in an evening, nursing it most of the night. Since I prefer dark beer (ales mostly) , it is best when warm anyway, and I like warm beer.

You are not doomed my friend, just forced to be cautious.

I get hit whether I drink or not in cycle, but booze will bring one on inside 20 minutes. There is no worse time to get hit than when trying to enjoy yourself with friends so I stick to soft drinks when I am in cycle. I prefer to get hit when I am at home and able to cope, not in a pub, restaurant or out with friends.

Out of cycle I drink whatever I fancy beer, wine, whisky - you name it - I love it!

Mel, I'll take the merlot if it's going free  ;;D

My real desire is for English cask ale that has thankfully been restored it's rightful place after many years of bland "lager for the masses". Wish I could get it here in Cape Town   :-[

gardenal - I hope your cycle is over soon - when you have been pain free for a week, celebrate with a few drinks, that's my advice

I'm happily at the other end of the scale and can drink in cycle, out of cycle, and even on my cycle  ('cept it can't handle its grog and tries to kill me).

To my many ClusterMates world-wide who can't even look at the demon drink just now, please rest assured that I'm raising a golden coldie in your honour and I ask all who can to do the same.

Cheers and beers,

Brian Down Under.

Sulfites in wine can cause headaches for just about anybody that has a lack of tolerance for sulfites. Many dried fruits contain sulfites. Before I got CH I got headaches from wine. I'm talking about one glass would do it.

I now seriously avoid any alcohol consumption.  Instant trigger so it's out.  Folks very frequently report alcohol as a trigger during cycles but have no problems between cycles so it's not out for many.

Love my beer and good scotch. Out of cycle no problem. Thats my acid test for a new cycle. Get one headache, wonder if it is really a cycle or just a strange breakthrough? Drink a beer and get a headache, then don't get within 10 feet of alcohol or people that "dip" in perfume! Farther off for the perfume freaks.

As a former episodic now chronic I have found that clear alcohol is ok for me.  So its alot of Bloody Mary's and screwdrivers.  Beer is almost a for sure everytime I get hit.  :-[  Wine and Champagne BAM!!!  I hate to say it but you kinda have to have the TREX in one hand and your favorite drink in the other to see if you are gonna get hit.

PF days ahead for us all

Thanks for your insight. I miss my Miller Light. So, no tricks for drinking in a cycle? I was just hoping. I know a drink will bring it on for me, that was how it came back, I was in the hot tub with a Miller and BAM!

Ya might want to try drinking a real beer.......
http://www.newsisfree.com/blog/archives/guinness.jpg

It may be that drinking that piss water is what is triggering an attack.

Seriously though, drinking does not trigger an attack for me.
I avoided it for a while out of fear.
I then tried a sip here and there and realized that if it were going to trigger an attack then it would do so in minutes.

I do not know if this was an idicator for me turning chronic or not. March will begin my 2nd yr. chronic.

It is something that my doctor is interested in studying.
Whether the abillity to drink alcohol can be an indication of turning chronic . Many appear to be able to drink.
Be well and be PF.

Hey, I have to watch my figure!! Believe it or not Miller Light is most people's fav where I am.That is interesting....being able to drink and being chronic, it would make a good study. I feel for you.

For years I didn't touch alcohol and then one night I had a glass of wine and Nothing happened. A few years later I tried a beer (a sure trigger) and nothing happened, so now, occasionally I have a drink of whatever I want. Guess I outgrew that trigger.

I don't care what anyone says - these damn headaches don't make a bit of sense. One day a trigger - tomorrow - nothing.... Guess just try it and if it triggers a CH - don't do it. Heck tomorrow I may be back on the wagon again.... who knows...

no problems when out of cycle. beer or wine is almost like a "test strip" for me to gage when my cycle has truly left. no hit after beers and it usually means the CH cycle is done.

I'm with you on this one E  - Guiness is the best!

Gardengal - Millers Light - what are you thinking? That's not real beer!

...out of cycle no probem.  The true test for when a cycle has ended, Absolut and tonic.  I'll be trying one this weekend as my cycle ended about three weeks ago.

During cycle has always been a trigger for me.  And the wine seems to be an instant trigger and might even start a new cycle for me during times when I'm not typically there.  So, I had previously tried to stay away from alcohol except for special occassions (at one point this was reallly hard b/c I was a bartender and bouncer  for 8 years).  Two years ago, I had some other issues with alocohol that got me into a bit of trouble so I have pretty much sworn off the stuff and haven't touched it since that time.  I personally think that if you have any doubts, you may just want to stay awy during cycle and then try to bring it back very slowly when you're sure that your cycle is over.  Much luv, luck and PFDs to you. :) 8)

Over the years I've had dozens of attacks in bars while just trying to have a few drinks after work with friends. There is nothing worse then feeling the intial numbness come into your forehead after about a drink and a half.  At that point I just hope I can pay my tab and get home before I'm full blown.

The one thing I have found is that beer and wine are much more likely to trigger than mixed drinks.  Try a vodka soda on me once you feel like your moving out of cycle.  Once you get away with that a couple of times move on to beer and wine.

No!

But who needs it anyway?

My first cycles seemed it made no difference whether I had a drink or not, but the last cycle - absolutely not.  So, I stick to ice water with a lovely slice of lime in it, iced teas, and coffee (I can't stand soft drinks).  Guess what - there was a great benefit from being on the wagon - I lost over 10 lbs during that cycle  ;;D  Hell of a way to lose weight, and I've gained it all back and probably more since  >:(

I've never been much of a drinker. But ch made me absolutist pretty much. My chronic days made me avoid alcohol and since I've been PF I didn't want to risk it. I've had a drink twice since April 05 and on both occasions I had shadows immediately. So it's a no- no for me.

"will i ever be able to have a drink again??"

-if I said the answer was NO, how would you feel.

If alcohol is a trigger for you, ask yourself which is more important to you -  avoiding a CH attack or a drink.

Maybe I missed the question??

I agree Doug.

If you even THINK you might get hit after a drink.... to me it's a NO BRAINER!
