Hello everyone,

My dad recently pointed me to this site. I didn't realize the extent of the CH's until he lost his job and didn't really understand until recently. I knew they were painful to a point where you may want to die..but that's all i knew. I just had some questions about them that may or may not have answers.

Is it something that can be passed on to your kids? I get headaches a lot, but just little ones, in comparison, that last for 2-3 weeks. Is there anyway to know if your going to be one of the "lucky" few that will get them? If so how can you tell?

If anyone knows the answer please let me know it would be very helpful to my curiosity.

Hi Val,
Sorry we missed your post down here and it's taken so long for a response.
It was a good idea for your Dad to have you read through these boards, many links on the left can at least give you somewhat of an idea of what he is going through. You're not expected to have to understand the pain, and we pray you never experience it.
You mention you have headaches that last for 2-3 weeks, if this happens often, you may want to see a doctor. You would know if they were possibly Cluster Headaches as they would not feel anything like a "Headache" at all. Might want to click on the link "Cluster Quiz" on the left of this page just to put your mind at ease. (I hope it does.)
So far as we know right now, our research shows that only 13% of those who suffer from CH even have another family member who does as well. Most thoughts lean toward CH as not being hereditary.
Try not to stress yourself about getting CH, check with a doctor though on your other headaches. Stress just leads to anxiety and does not help. Concentrate your life around the pain free days and enjoy them to the fullest. Your Dad would want this for you as well.

From my research and personal experiences, it can be very difficult to accurately diagnose CH in children. From my own experiences, my CH was alot different when I was younger than they are now. As a child and through my teens, I had these fairly severe pains in my head that would occur for about 2 to 3 weeks normally once or twice a year. The attacks would last for maybe 15 to 30 minutes, up to 2 hours during a real bad one, once or twice a day. During my late teens, the attacks began to become longer, more severe, and more regular... Eventually taking on the more classic symptoms of the syndrome.

From what I have read, CH can often start in children without all the classic symptoms (and even symptoms that could be easily confused with migraines) and progressively change into the more classic symptoms of CH as the person matures.

I know this info doesn't really help, but if you do end up having CH, it's better that you find out as soon as possible, and start working towards finding a viable treatment. I agree with Dave, that if you have concerns with your headaches, please see a medical professional ASAP... A neurologist if you can. Good luck to you, and your father. *hugZ*
