Title: Another New One
Post by Wayne on May 30th, 2007, 3:32pm
Hi

Can't say that I'm wildly happy to have to be here but I am very chuffed to have found this site, I have learned more in a week of prowing around here than in 4 years of going from doctor to doctor trying to figure out what was wrong and why.

So a bit about me, been a clusterhead for 4 years now but only known it for 2, spent the first 2 years being treated for sinusitus etc (nothing new there I see). cycles hit me with with the change to winter like clockwork. At least this year I was prepared and with the info I have found here its been fairly tolerable so far.

DJ, I believe that you're the mastermind behind this site, absolutely awesome what you've done, thanks man.

Wayne

Hi

Last year the doc put me on Topomax but it made me very fuzzy headed, really didn't like it although it did work. So this year I'm trying Verapamil 720 mg although I started it a bit late so I don't know whether its working yet. What is working is the Red Bull. I've put myself on 1000mg of Taurine and 1000mg of Magnesium, as much coffee as i can drink and have found, to my delight, that if I feel a shadow a Red Bull and a Migril knocks it on the head in 20 minutes. Been in cycle for 3 weeks now and been trying this for 2. the first week was hell, since then only 2 major hits and a few shadows.
Now that I never would have known were it not for this site.
Oh, and cutting out beer also seems to help, both those hits were after a session at the pub.

Welcome to the board......even if you talk funny! ;;D

Sounds like you are lucky and found a doctor who knows a little about these things. The only thing I'd suggest is you try and add oxygen to your regimen. Breathing pure 02 will abort a headache for me in less then ten minutes. I use lithium as my prevent, oxygen as my first line abort and imitrex injectables when all else fails. Welcome to the board, and you're right, that DJ guy is a saint.

No doubt cut the alcohol.O2 don't work for me but it does for many others. To abort I use Imitrex, that is my abortive of choice for me the injections of coarse, and I'm also on varapamil 360 per day.As long as I stay true to my preventive I can keep the beast at bay(not totally) for the most part.Good luck to you and my you have many pain free days.

Thanks for the advice. O2 makes sense to me and I will definitely kit myself out for it, Imitrex injections, anything with a needle makes me unhappy so I think I'm going to skip that for now.

Something I have noticed is that you guys in the States etc have access to some things that haven't reached accross the ocean yet, Kudzu being one. Imetrex is also fairly foreign here.

Believe me the Injections are nowhere near a bad as they sound they don't hurt as bad as a CH thats for sure.Good luck Wayne.many pain free days for you.

Thanks Dave! One thing this site certainly has done is given me a feeling of some control, firstly because I now have at least a vague understanding of whats going on and secondly because of the wide range of treatments that folk use. I would, if possible, like to get prescription med free although I'm not sure how feasible that is yet. I see that some guys have gone that route but theres always the remission question.

I have tried that and it works like a dream, I was amazed. Also drinking gallons of coffee. At the moment I'm 4 days pf and counting but not sure whether its the Taurine and Magnesium, or the Verap or the coffee thats doing the trick or the combo of the lot. Definitely have the red Bull on stand by all the time though.

A word of advice about the topamax. I've been on it since 99 and it's been my miracle drug. I take the whole dose at NIGHT and skip most of the side effect (the dopey feeling totally). If the verap doesn't do the trick you might try that.

Red Bull is your friend, but O2 is great.

Sorry you have to be here, but glad you found us...

Hi Wayne, and welcome to this funny farm we CH'ers call home.  There is so much information and knowledge on these baords, so just read, read, and ask any of us any question you might have.  As I was told when I first joined this site, the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask.  So fire away.

I second all of those who have suggested oxygen.  It has been shown, by a great many people on these boards, to be their first "go to" abortive.  It's inexpensive, and it works.

Just hang in there.  Keep us posted on how you are doing, and we'll try to help you all we can.

Sandy
