Title: Total NewB here Post by DeeBeeDee on May 17th, 2007, 11:36pm Hi, my name is DBD, and I am an alcoholic (literally) This isn't the first time I've posted on this forum but it is the first time I've posted under this screen name. I've had cluster headaches since I was 12, about 9 years ago to date. I'm currently having one. I am an alkey and I've had this cluster headache almost 12 hours now (which is very unusual...) I've had this headache since 11am central time. I started drinking at around 1pm, close to when I got off of work, because I didn't know of any other way to relieve my pain. My lady friend is upset because I'm drunk, and wont talk to me, but at this point, I couldn't care less, because I'm in so much pain... I've been able to function (barely) in the past 'X' hours... I even made dinner!!! But right now I need to sleep but of course I can't (I'm standing up right now) But nonetheless I will get thru it, albeit excrusiatinglyu difficult. I just wanted to commend all you sufferers out there for getting thru these difficult times. Stay strong. Take care DBD |

Title: Re: Total NewB here Post by AussieBrian on May 18th, 2007, 12:03am A 12 hour headache really is a bit unusual Deebs. Not unheard of, just unusual. Quite obviously you're aware that alcohol is a serious trigger for many clusterheads, but have you ever had a genuine diagnosis of the condition? It really is important but let us know how you get on regardless. |

Title: Re: Total NewB here Post by George_J on May 18th, 2007, 12:08am Well.... I know that alcohol can be a demon for some folks, and I commend you for recognizing that it is for you, but it is often a trigger for CH. So you may very well be compounding your headaches by using alcohol--making them even more severe and frequent. I encourage you to try to come to grips with your addiction to alcohol. It's a terrible and destructive addiction for anyone to have, but it's particularly bad for a clusterhead. It won't help, and it very well may make them worse. Personally, when I'm in cycle, I'd rather point a loaded revolver at my big toe and pull the trigger than consume any alcohol at all. Yeah, I know--talk, talk, talk. You may very well have plenty of counterarguments--but the fact remains that it'll kill you, eventually. And long before that, it will torture you. It's a demon, but you're only making your other demon, CH, stronger. Is it worth it? Best wishes, George |

Title: Re: Total NewB here Post by Ray on May 18th, 2007, 1:16am Dear DBD: I hear you, and my heart goes out to you. What George said above reflects my feelings as well (Thank you George.) There are other, positive steps you can take to control the "Beast" of cluster headaches. When your head is more clear, please give us some more background and let us try to offer positive suggestions. Looking forward to better days and nights, Ray |

Title: Re: Total NewB here Post by Lotus on May 18th, 2007, 1:52am Alcoholism is very difficult to overcome, but not impossible. It takes a lot effort though. Have you got medication for CH? Are you on oxygen? You may be interested in trying Kudzu, some people here have found it to be helpful as a preventive for CH and it is also used for alcoholism. Take care and painfree wishes to you. First off the alcohol is probably triggering back to back hits. Secondly drinking because you know of no other way to treat the pain is complete bullshit. How long were you sober before you decided to treat the pain? |

Title: Re: Total NewB here Post by artonio7 on May 21st, 2007, 1:54am I don't understand. It's not my intention to minimize your suffering yet I want to know from you what the pain of your cluster headache feels like. Although they are not uncommon a 3 hour Cluster headache is somewhat rare for me. Mine usually last somewhere around an hour and a half to two hours During an attack I am so engaged by the pain I can not even think of doing anything else but writhe, rock, cry, scream, moan, pray, curse, or all of the above at once. It's even difficult for me to make complete sentences from a kip 8 and up. Please describe your headache. Also... when you're ready to stop drinking you will. The disease of alcoholism touches every aspect of your being as well as affecting everyone in your life. When you are ready to stop... find a meeting. Alcoholics Anonymous can be found in your local yellow pages. You and only you can take the first step towards recovery. Once you decide to do so you will discover a new you. Keep us posted. with warm regards, Tony |
