Title: Minnesota/Great Lakes surfing
Post by cynjeep89 on Dec 15th, 2007, 11:18am
I had seen an article about Great Lakes surfing a while ago and finally had a chance to check out some videos.  Wow!

My brother has been surfing along the east coast since the early 1970s.  He and his buddies surf in all kinds of weather all times of the year wherever they could find decent waves.

I have been on the beach with him in sweltering heat and waited in his van with a thermos full of hot coffee in one hand while trying to break ice off of his wet suit with the other in the winter.

After watching these guys in the videos surfing the Great Lakes in temps of -20 degrees, I am amazed!!

Has anyone who lives near The Great Lakes ever gone to watch these surfers?  Looks like they get some good rides with decent sized waves.

"-20 degree wind chills".......not sure what the actual temp was.

I stand corrected :)

Doesn't matter what the actual temp is, that water is COLD!!!

In our younger and wilder days (pre-kid and pre-homeowner) Brew and I participated in the annual Polar Bear romp on New Year's Day.  One gets lubricated with lots of liquor and one jumps into Lake Michigan at noon with thousands of other crazy folks.

Brew's only comment after coming out of the water was "My balls are in my throat" . . . .

We never did it again.

I can't imagine surfing in that lake although I see wind surfers out there in all kinds of weather.http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y261/GawkyEndymion000/snow2.gif

Pat,

My step-brother, Tim and his family do the Polar Bear thingy in Rehoboth Beach every year.

We saw them on Thanksgiving Day and Tim was telling John and me how much fun the Polar Bear Plunge is and asked if we wanted to join them this year.

I think he is trying to get rid of us.

Not impossible. The air temp could drop that low (although it is rare around here), but the water temp can still be in the 30's. It's when you step out of the water that everything - and I mean EVERYTHING - that's wet will freeze almost instantly.

Wanna lose some body heat in a hell of a hurry? Jump into cold water. Even when drunk, it hurts.

I'll try anything once.

I think I will stick to mountain biking! I swim like a rock so being around water is not my favorite place to be. ;;D

Check out this clip, it is about 7 minutes long but starts to get interesting about 4 minutes into it. CRAZY SURFERS!!!

I imagine surfing would be easier when your feet are frozen to the board!

Once you make it into the shore, you need to have a friend meet you with an icepick. ;;D

I would imagine these guys would need a few ice picks once they got back to shore.....

This clip of BC surfer, Peter Deveries is amazing. The guy is using every inch of the waves.....cut backs, rail riding.....WOW.  Makes me feel like a slug sitting here being lazy in my jammies :-/

Being lazy and sitting in your jammies has its merits. ;;D

The Wench and I just finished snowblowing the driveway, patio, and side slab, after which we cleared about 18" of snow from the roof. Then we had to snowblow all of THAT out of the way.

Now it's into the shower and then lunch with my mom for her birthday today.

Jammies sound like a better option!
