Title: Connection
Post by Charlie on Dec 5th, 2007, 12:31am
Not that most of you goofs will notice, but it's taking me 4 or 5 minutes to connect anywhere on line. So until I get this fixed, you'll all have a respite from my nonsense.

Rats.

Blame the Iranians.  It's the fashionable thing to do.   ;;D

Best,

I feel for you, Charlie. These days my computer always insists that it doesn't have internet connection, although I know very well that it does and once I do the connection test, it turns out to be fine. Still, that is a daily ritual... Meanwhile Timo sits right next to me and his puter has absolutely no probs with it whatsoever! ::)

I have been having quite a few problems with loading pages too.  I'll try and load a thread and the page will partially load and then hang.

I blame Helen for hogging bandwith with her prolific posts ;;D

Upping your bandwith is the EASY bit!!!  :P

Your IQ would take ALOT longer and basically - it could only be done if we could find a female brain to transplant into you!

Geeze....She never lets up, does she? What is it over there?  :D

Anyway, my idiot server.....if you can call it that.... although I've been "served" many times of late. Has some kind of "accelerator" thing installed that does in fact, speed up things a bit with dialup but I have to hit "original image" to get a decent picture or to get the whole effect such as animation. I'm used to it. I get "local area connection cable unplugged" almost all the time. That doesn't affect the speed so far as I can tell. I can't seem to get a satisfactory explanation nor can I get one for "access deined" or to the effect that I'm not allowed to even see a few places...this has nothing to do with passwords.

The latter is rare enough though. It's no doubt George Bush & Co. spying on my clicks. Lotsa luck. Hope they enjoy my hits on "Crotchless Bikini Clad Button Hole Drillers Of Hobart, Tasmania."

Anyway, here I is looking for trouble. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/binochs.gif

Charlie,

Those are all classic symptoms of a caching server that doesn't know when to get fresh content.  Here is a trick you can use...

When you get a page that isn't loading correctly or rendering correctly, hit ctrl-F5 (the control key + the function key F5 together).  This forces a complete refresh of the page and should force the proxy server between you and your content to re-fetch the content for you.

Have a happy happy day my friend.

Thanks but as I look at my post, it's more than that sometimes. I get "Not Permitted" as often as denied.

I'll try the other though.

Thanks Fu.

Yeah, so the ctrl-F5 thing *should* resubmit the request to the proxy in a way that tells the proxy (that web accelerator thingy) to get out of the way.  It is just one thing to try.  Good luck.

The other option is to turn off that acceleration... usually it's a small application that you can uninstall or shut down.  The speed boost is not usually worth it if you are using dial-up.  Even with dial-up, I turn it off because of the authentication problems.

Thanks but I tried turning off the acceleration thing and they won't allow it. I don't mind that actually. It does speed things up and has been there for a couple of years.

I suspect I have firewall or other stuff in play with the other.

Things are back to normal for now.

Charlie
