Title: Re: Pete visit in Switzerland Post by wildhaus on Dec 1st, 2007, 10:53am OK..... For the “sceptical” I will try and enlighten what the unit on the table is, the unit is what we Swiss call table grill or better known (in Switzerland) as Raclettegrill We use it for “melting” the Raclette (cheese) http://www.raclette-suisse.ch/assistant/get/?_id=1638353ecdcbfa674df0590a6589558a what is Raclette? http://www.walliserraclette.ch/media/k_rac.jpg According to documentary evidence from monasteries in Ob- and Nidwalden, we can presume that Wilhelm Tell enjoyed «Bratchäs», as raclettes were formerly called, in as early as 1291. This involved melting the raclette cheese over an open fire and gradually scraping the softened cheese onto a plate. The younger generations have now acquired knowledge of and developed a passion for the product. In this way, the herbs on our meadows give rise to a unique product that embodies our tradition and our culture. Raclette is therefore a genuine piece of Switzerland – and only the Raclette Suisse ® brand is your guarantee of natural purity, first-rate quality and product safety. How to prepare for a raclette Traditional: Melt half a wheel of Raclette cheese under the traditional grill. http://www.weinschenker.nl/beelden/spec11/raclette_oven.jpg We use the Quick and easy way we use an electric grill with Raclette-pans http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:jVj1qTNDQJ0KLM …… which is the middle part of the table grill oven http://km22329.auvito.de/cache400/f8/e3/1_1_000000_mb9143_e50cdb8bc2334fe7b02975ba3d575d46_mainpicjpg.jpg On the top of the so called “tisch grill” we grill meats and deferent sausages as well as vegetables……. It is like the Fondue (which we will have tonight) a “party” dinner, just slowly eating and cocking at the same time…. each one the “speed” he chooses and the quantity he chooses….. Mostly we serve “raclette Potatoes” (its new potatoes) and Perl onions cornishons fresh tomatoes onions and garlic, and most important a good (light) white wine http://www.riegger.ch/upload/prj/beverage/Aigle_Les_Murailles.jpg … and some schnapps…… so.... any Quetions? Title: Re: Pete visit in Switzerland Post by Batch on Dec 3rd, 2007, 6:18am Wildhaus Switzerland… What can you say when you’re surrounded by God’s beauty… You get up in the morning at Michael and Marta’s home and look out the kitchen window… Here’s what you see… http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m236/petebatch/Kitchen_Window.jpg Then you take an excellent cup of Swiss Coffee and stroll to the South facing windows and you see more beauty… http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m236/petebatch/SouthView.jpg But as beautiful as Wildhaus can be… It cannot hold a candle to the loving hospitality Michael and Marta gave so freely… http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m236/petebatch/Michael-n-Marta.jpg Words can’t really convey the experience… There’s Ben… A bundle of non-stop energy and questions… http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m236/petebatch/Ben.jpg and JJ. Smart is an understatement… http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m236/petebatch/JJ.jpg These two operate on another level, sharp, intuitive, fluent in German and English… I was the dummy… They even introduced me to a German version of Nickelodeon with SpongeBob SquarePants… and Plankton… Helen was right… I was AWOL for a while… A week’s travel prior to arriving in Switzerland had me run down to the point where a cold I thought was over graduated into bronchial pneumonia… But Marta kept my cup full of chamomile tea and Michael ran me through the sauna a couple times and I was well on the mend. All the meals were superb, but fondue with Appenzeller Swiss cheese the last night was outstanding and oh so good… http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m236/petebatch/Fondu.jpg The trip home started with a long drive to Wil to board a direct train to Zurich… Michael got me on the train safe and sound. The 8-hour flight back to Dulles was pleasant and I was able to sleep during most of it. Thank you Michael and Marta for a most wonderful stay in Wildhaus. Please give my love to the boys. Peter |
