Title: Casey got owned last night Post by DennisM1045 on Nov 30th, 2007, 3:27pm I mentioned before that my son Casey wants to be a fighter. He has a black sash in KungFu and has been trainging to box for the last three months. Last night he was supposed to fight a kid from a neighboring town with similar experience to him. Unfortunately for Casey, that didn't happen. The kid didn't show up and my kid ended up fighting 3 rounds in an exhibition match against a kid from Peurto Rico that is 80-8 with 50 knockouts. He's been fighting since he was 6 years old and is in the area for a Silver Mitten's tournemant that's about to start up. His trainer Mick (can you believe that?) got an ear full from me after the match. I'll say one thing though, Casey has no shortage of balls. I'm proud of him. So was everyone else in Haverhill last night. Here's a link to the video. WARNING: It's not for the squimish. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg9zjj1C0WE -Dennis- edited to add: his nose gets broken at 5:29. Till then he wasn't really hurt. |

Title: Re: Casey got owned last night Post by brewcrew on Nov 30th, 2007, 4:17pm I don't know if I'd call that "owned." He was standing up at the end, right? To go up against a guy who is 80-8 with 50 KO's shows he's got a big brass set of cojones. Owned? Hardly. |

Title: Re: Casey got owned last night Post by phil_h on Nov 30th, 2007, 5:22pm Casey was totally overmatched. But he did great. This guy didn't knock him out . Seemed to lack the speed and experience of his seasoned opponent . He'll learn by experience. He did not back down and seemed rather poised throughout . Great job. phil h |

Title: Re: Casey got owned last night Post by Annette on Nov 30th, 2007, 6:27pm Fighting is not just about winning or losing, its about having the courage to face your own fear . Casey didnt back off from an opponent he knew was much more experienced than him, not necessarily a better fighter but had more experience. The highest achievement in KungFu is not to win against your opponent, but to conquer yourself, which Casey did real well. He should be wearing that black sash with pride. GOOD ON YOU Casey !!!!! :-* :-* :-* Welldone dad, you have raised a hell of a son ! Be proud ! :-* |

Title: Re: Casey got owned last night Post by DennisM1045 on Dec 1st, 2007, 2:03pm Thanks for all your comments. Its a strange mix of feelings I've got. I'm pissed that he ended up in the ring that overmatched, proud as hell at the guts and poise he showed and scared to death of what might happen to him in the long run. Have you ever been in a Gym with a bunch of ex-boxers? Added together 10 of them might have a full set of teeth and an IQ touching 150. He's 18 though and I can't tell him what to do. So I'm just going with the pride thing and trying not to dwell on the stuff I have no control over. I guess there is as much talk about my comments to his trainer as Casey's fight. I feel bad about taking anything away from what he accomplished that night but I just couldn't have lived with myself if the trainer didn't hear about it from me. At least he knows I'm watching. Another trainer from a boxing club in Sailsbury was trying to recruit him after the fight. That guy said this never would have happend in his Gym. I'm trying to nudge Casey in that direction. Maybe next season. Thanks again for all the comments. Casey loved reading them. This keeps up and I'll have to get him some new head gear [smiley=laugh.gif] -Dennis- |

Title: Re: Casey got owned last night Post by DennisM1045 on Dec 1st, 2007, 2:30pm Great analogy Phil! I'll try to remember this the next time I step into the ring with the beast. If my kid can face a champ from Puerto Rico I should be able to face a beast in my own head ;) -Dennis- |

Title: Re: Casey got owned last night Post by Ghost on Dec 4th, 2007, 8:39am First Hardly owned... second if he gets a chance to face that one again or any other most amatures drop their left shoulder jabbing when they do come overhand right at forehead. also when the other guy came in with his right he drops his left straight jab right follow with a quick left uppercut. lean right when you go in for the combo, keeping to the weak side of the other and leading with the right will throw them off guard. the other guy should have gotten warned at least 4 times for forearm chopping, ok to block with gloves but not ok to chop with forearm across forearm. alot do it and usually get away with it. he has a good stance and he doesnt over extend. first fight he kept his head and tried to pace himself, that will be a strong point in longer matches. have him practice heavy bacg body blows and speed bag left hand more than right. He shows a great deal of promise and can do alot with it if he really wants. Mike |

Title: Re: Casey got owned last night Post by DennisM1045 on Dec 4th, 2007, 12:42pm Great insight Mike. His trainer made a lot of the same points when he got back to the Gym yesterday. You know your boxing ;;D Casey hasn't lost his taste for it. In fact he can't wait till his next match. That's likely to be in the Golden Gloves tourney this coming January. Over the weekend Casey put the experience this way, "I learned more in one fight that I would have sparing at my own level in a year. All it cost me was a broken nose. That's a small price to pay." -Dennis- |

Title: Re: Casey got owned last night Post by Ghost on Dec 4th, 2007, 3:02pm 1 last piece of advise when he looses his passion for it get out and remember all the friends he will make, just cause they fought doesnt mean they cant be friends. Mike |

Title: Re: Casey got owned last night Post by alchemy on Dec 4th, 2007, 4:05pm You should be proud as hell of your son. There is a big difference between your son and the other fighter. When Casey got hit he stood his ground the other guy was obviously was affected. your son with a little more experience would lay that guy out. it reminds of when i trained David Carradine, he learned to take a punch ::) |

Title: Re: Casey got owned last night Post by Sean_C on Dec 4th, 2007, 8:14pm Mickey came from a long line of fighters, his brother beat Sugar Ray I believe. I think for the Golden Gloves, can't remember. From what I hear, he's a nice kid too. Cheers, Sean................................. |

If it makes you feel any better, the most recent review found that there is no real evidence that amateur boxing is associated with cumulative or permanent brain damage. This one didn't look at professional boxing (probably much more risk there). All sport has some risk, and this doesn't seem to be as big as some people think. http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?tool=pubmed&pubmedid=17916811 |

Title: Re: Casey got owned last night Post by DennisM1045 on Dec 5th, 2007, 4:00pm That makes me feel a bit better. Though the data the study was based on is admittedly poor quality. Thanks clusterbrother! 8) -Dennis- |
