Title: Find your limit.
Post by Redd on Nov 20th, 2007, 8:52pm
The Holidays are fast approaching, and there will soon be much Merriment and party going.  Because I love each and every one of you, please take a look at this site and find your limit.

http://www.intox.com/wheel/drinkwheel.asp

Too many lives have been lost over impaired drivers.  PLease take just a moment to learn what your limit is, and pass the keys if need be.

Great little guide!!! Mine ended up at .000 at 180 lbs 1 Irish coffee over 2 hours.

I wonder if that's the same for Bailey's Irish creme? Beside an occasional sip of white wine (once every couple years) I do like Bailey's in coffee but rarely. I used to be able to chill a bottle of Baileys and be done with it in an hour. Before that it was Jack Daniels, a bottle in a day with Wild Turkey as a chaser.

Oh... the lost years. :D

with warm regards,
Tony

No worries here Redd.  I reached the absolute limit a long time ago with my impaired driving and quit golf!

Heres an easy way to figure it seeing how not many people sit around with a drink wheel while socializing.

For each drink you take your BAC incresases .02 %.

On average your liver eliminates .02% of alcohol per hour after the first hour.

Drink 3 beers in 1 hour and your BAC will be around .06%. Wait another hour without a beer and you are down to .04%

About ten years ago my Dad said to me....."You took my keys away so I cant drive (age 76), I want you never to drive again while you had too many" (Drunk).......He died three days later and I have kept the promise I made to him.

Man, I lucked out not killing someone back in the day!

Good post, Redd!

Designated Driver.

Now that I don't drink anymore, I don't go to many parties anymore either. So on second thought, call a cab.

For years I worked as an instructor for the courts 24D Program. More lovingly known as drunk school.

Seen them come, seen them go, saw far to many return.

I agree!

Brew... so far the avatar you have up now is my favorite. That twirling thing used to make me anxious.

Hmm.  Well Don you edited your 1st. response but I was going to say that I arbitrarily put in...

2 glasses of wine over a period of 2 hours,  and it came up as .07

Yet you're saying 3 beers in one hour and it's only at .06?  S'plain that to me someone.    [smiley=huh.gif]

If you are male and weigh 170 pounds and you have consumed 3 US beer(s) evenly over a period of 2 hour(s) then...

Your estimated blood/breath
alcohol concentration is
.026 g/210 liters of breath

That twirling thing was a bass clef, as are all the others (the current one being a stylized double rendering, similar to the ying/yang symbol). And I'm glad I could make a positive contribution to your well-being. ;)

Differant wines have differant alcohol contents.

Explained?

There is some diference between the way males motabablize and women do, in addition to the person's body weight.

A 200 lb person can drink more than a 90 lb person.  Linda you weigh 80 soaking wet.

There you have it.

Females also have less natural water content in their bodies.

This drinking is way too complex for me.  I can remember zero pretty well.

The swingin' bass was ok but being a Pisces, this one's cool too, Brew.

::)   The test didn't specify what kind of wine It only said red table wine.   Of course I put in that I was female.  If this is a generalization then I suppose that I AM  under the normal height and weight for women and that could make a difference.

For clarification on my questions though...my son was almost killed by a drunk driver.  His life is ruined, he cannot work, he is in constant pain and he is only 23 yrs. old.   I don't drive while under the influence and never have...I just found Peggs test thing confusing a little is all which is why I was asking.  Thanks.

It is very confusing and that is why it wasn't used in the 24D program. The rule of thumb was always .02% increase per drink for an individual of average weight.

Except for the Jonnies who always disputed it. Those were the individuals who I usually saw hit the 2nd offenders program and sometimes the third offenders program.

Well jeeze I only hoped to maybe give people a tool.  I got this link from my Sherriff friend, so I'd assume he's passing on a good tool.

No no no Pegg.  It was a good thing that you brought this to everyones attention.  You know us....we always have to pick things apart or question everything.

You did a good thing by putting this out there.  Honest.

Could also depend on when you last had a meal and how much you ate.....lots of variables to consider.

Good reminder though, Pegg.  Thanks.

Its an excellent tool. Its just not a practical one for someone to use if they are out having a few drinks and trying to determine if they can legally operate a motor vehicle.

My friends, John and Myra are the designated "drinkers" and I drive. Has worked for years. And I have just as much fun at the parties as they do and don't have near as many hangovers... ;;D

Please guys -- if you drink - call a cab -- it's just not worth it....

The theory here chewy is for folks to calculate their limits BEFORE they head out for the evening.  This helps in 2 ways.

1) knowing their limit before heading out keeps them cognisant of their consumption throughout the evening.

2)  They are more likely to pass the keys to a sober driver or call a cab because they'll be aware if they are over the limit.

I tyed in for ONE gin and tonic over one hour and I would be over the limit and convictable - damn I want my fat back!!

Seriously - I won't even have one drink if I'm driving. This just goes to prove what I've always thought which is there are too many factors involved, what you've eaten, your health at the time etc - I can have one drink and feel tipsy or I can have 5 and not feel a thing but I don't know until I start - so if I'm driving - I don't!

Thanks Redd, its very interesting. I'll be emailing it to everyone as food for thought.

I moved from Detroit to Houston in the early eighties and had a regular hangout.  One night the police came cruising through and I had to ask a fellow local, "What the fuck is this?"  He kind of sheepishly cautioned they do a walk through once in awhile for public intoxication.  New one on me but they still do, I see.

Makes you wonder if their favorite hangouts were also as diligently patrolled, I had drank with many a cop in Detroit.

I have 4 business parities/dinners I'll be attending this season.  Company Holiday Party,  Our President and Publisher's Retirement party, the United Way Holiday dinner and the Managing Editor's going away party.

Hopelessly single, I'll be attending these event sans an escort, therefore I'm taking precautions to ensure that no accidents will be due to my being intoxicated.

My hope was and is to pass this tool along.  Be safe this Holiday Season.

It is a good reminder, if it does nothing more than to make folks consious of their impairment.

I remember back in the late 60's the winner of the Indy 500 didn't think that just drink or two made all that much difference, so he participated in a test.  They set up a course with a number of cones for him to drive around and through while being timed.  After only one drink his skills ere marginally effected, but after only two drinks he hit a couple of cones and his time was much slower although he thought he had done better.  He swore off drinking and driving right then, and I never started.

Enjoy yourselves, but please do it responsibly.

Jerry

Good reminder, Pegg! :)

There are plenty of Finns who should do the very same test's Finnish version... ::)

I'm not much of a drinker myself, never have been. A sip of champagne is enough to give me shadows, so I'm not excited to risk that. Besides, I was brought up with the lesson: if you drink, you do not drive. That lesson I'm gladly passing along.

I asked a group of 1st offenders to do the calculations, based on the night of their arrest, and reveal them to the group.

One looked up at me and said "I don't even have to be here"

Expecting him to say he wasn't even drunk when he was pulled over he surprised me by saying:

"Because according to this thing I'm  dead. Can I go home now."

Thats when I stopped using the wheel.
