Title: Today started out crappy... Post by Melissa on Nov 16th, 2007, 5:56pm But then it snowed... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/mfiltz/DSC05568.jpg Wasn't a lot, but it lifted my spirits soooo much. Then this afternoon it was time for the kids to decorate the cut-outs I made on Wednesday... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/mfiltz/DSC05573.jpg Here is the finished product... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/mfiltz/DSC05577.jpg It was pleasant. I found a station playing Christmas music all the time (they started about a week early this year), and inbetween O Holy Night & The Christmas Song, I found myself tearing up. I am so blessed for my children, they take me back to my childhood. In between the bad times, I do have good memories. Thank my Mom and Grandparents for that! I think I just might start the cream cheese frosted sour cream drops tonight... ;) |

Title: Re: Today started out crappy... Post by Melissa on Nov 16th, 2007, 9:24pm Jonny & Brew, You guys are so sweet! I didn't expect those kind of comments to come from anyone as I was just expressing my joy at the day. Thank you so much. :) Ya know, I'm glad I'm an optomist because inbetween the clusters, depression, anxiety, weight problems & general day to day crap, it's a wonder I'm still here. :-/ |

Title: Re: Today started out crappy... Post by Witches Brew on Nov 16th, 2007, 9:59pm Isn't it funny how making something as simple as cookies can make us happy? According to the radar we were getting pelted with snow all day - reality was NOT A FLAKE. I too, started my cookie baking this week (two weeks late for me). Let's see . . .I made ginger snaps, brown butter spritz, eggnog spritz, lemon spritz, cappachino spritz, snickerdoodles, and fruit-spice rounds. Only 11 more kinds to go, if I'm lucky! Bless you Mel, for finding the simple things in life so appealing - and passing that along to your kids. |

Title: Re: Today started out crappy... Post by Linda_Howell on Nov 16th, 2007, 10:19pm Aw Mel, I am so happy you put away the lawn chairs and umbrella like I told you to do. SEE...it was just waiting for you to do that so it could snow and make you happy. I can't think of a more special person to deserve that happiness. Crank up the Christmas music, look at those beautiful kids of yours and totally put the picture of those bad times out of your head. They don't exist anymore. Linda P.S. flake and bake Kevin? You crack me up. |

Title: Re: Today started out crappy... Post by Charlie on Nov 17th, 2007, 2:37am Great Mel and thanks for sending some white stuff here this afternoon. More to come, I hope. Nothing like grocery shopping this afternoon, drinking Yuppie coffee and eating a $1.50 chocolate chip cookie in their cafe while watching snow fall. Great day you and yours had and I want a cookie too. Charlie |

Title: Re: Today started out crappy... Post by sandie99 on Nov 17th, 2007, 5:45am Mel, those cookies look yummy! I wish that I could get candy cane shaped ones, but stores in here do not stock that shape. So it's mostly stars and hearts in here. :) on 11/16/07 at 21:59:33, Witches Brew wrote:

Title: Re: Today started out crappy... Post by Emily on Nov 17th, 2007, 7:21am Mel, My OH and I moved into our new house 2 days before Christmas last year, so didn't have much of a festive season. You've inspired me to do some holiday baking now and to make this Christmas extra special for us! I've started wrapping, starting clearing out the dining room and bought a new table setting and have just bought the necessary materials to make our own Christmas crackers. We're trying to think of something we can start doing this year that can then become a tradition for our family (when it comes along!). I'll post some pics of my sour cream drops later on!! Thanks for the inspiration! |

Title: Re: Today started out crappy... Post by Melissa on Nov 17th, 2007, 9:28am ;;D to everyone. Sanna- you mean you can't find a candy cane shaped cookie cutter? If you can't, I'll see if I can find one for you and ship it. :) Today I'm frosting the sour cream drops and then I think I'll do the dough for the gingerbread men. (they will have just icing) Jesse & Lily are out hunting, wish them loads of luck!!! It'd be SO exciting if Lily gets her first deer as this is only the 2nd season she's hunted! I hope I can post pics of her deer later! ;) |

Title: Re: Today started out crappy... Post by sandie99 on Nov 17th, 2007, 9:44am Mel, Cookie cutter, that's it. I coudn't recall what they were called... ;;D That's exactly what I mean. I love those, so I have hearts, stars, reindeer, moon, flying star, Santa, angel, Christmas bell, man, woman, boy, girl, Christmas trees... ;;D I nearly bought one in the shape of Finland last year's Christmas Fair. :) Quote:
That would be brilliant. :) The stores in here have opened their Christmas sections this week, so I haven't seen if they have added cookie cutters to those sections. I haven't seen any new ones at home departments. I always make joulutorttuja (Christmas Tarts): http://www.myllynparas.fi/ap-pics/reseptit/makeat_leivonnaiset/joulutorttu_rajattu_240.jpg ruispiparkakkuja (Rye Gingerbread) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fa/Freshly_baked_gingerbread_-_Christmas_2004.jpg/200px-Freshly_baked_gingerbread_-_Christmas_2004.jpg and Fruitcake from danes, cheese christmas trees and if I'm allowed, half moon cookies (with apple jam filling), mint chocolate sticks, jam eye cookies, little tiger cookies and sweet buns with star cookies on top. :) Sanna |

Title: Re: Today started out crappy... Post by Emily on Nov 17th, 2007, 6:13pm Mel, I've made half of the batch of drops, the other half is in the fridge for tomorrow. They are delicious! Question - How do you store them til Christmas? Do you ice them and then freeze them? If I don't put some away, we'll eat them all now! Pic to follow. Em |

Title: Re: Today started out crappy... Post by Melissa on Nov 17th, 2007, 7:11pm Mmmmmmmmm, lookin good Em! Did you use a muffin pan? Yes, I put mine into a storage container and freeze them until I take them out about 4 days before Christmas. :) btw, if it's too runny, just add more powdered (confectioner's) sugar until it's thicker. |
||
Title: Re: Today started out crappy... Post by Emily on Nov 18th, 2007, 4:48am Excellent. I will do that today. I put them in petit four cases because I'm going to take some into work too and they are probably easier to transport like that. They are delicious though! Thank you again! PS - More requests for recipes to follow... |
