Title: You got to try, right? Post by sandie99 on Nov 9th, 2007, 10:47am I've wanted to write for a women's magazine for a long, long time. So I finally decided that it's time to give it a real shot and so I took the matter to my own hands. I wrote an application and sent it to my fave women's weekly magazine's editor. I have no idea if I will ever hear from her, but got to try, right? I have applied several not that important jobs in the past and I have been getting rejection letters from newspapers and magazines all over the country or no reply at all, so I really don't have anything to lose - just one great opportunity to gain! And that's why, come what may, I'm already excited! :) Let's hope for the best with this one. :) Sanna |

You didn't mention but a couple short examples of something you wrote might be memorable to them. Certainly though, they don't know of you unless you get a resume in their hands. Have you tried newspaper's and periodical's websites for "career opportunities". Sometimes, after registering you can check something off to be notified of openings after an online application is submitted. Cover letter and resume are usually options, too. Any job starting out at where you like to work can be good and would be ok to apply for, a foot in the door. A search program can be designated on a job search site like "monster" that can also be viewed frequently or even have jobs with your entered criteria e-mailed to you, something similar in the way of employment seeking sites in Finland are available. Enter a search that has certain words in the title or job description and when it gives a display, notice the jobs included that aren't relevant and use exclusion words to have them not show up, tailoring to what you are looking for, but leave room for related jobs. Good luck Sanna :) Be careful with your info online and we wary of unsolicited responses. |

Title: Re: You got to try, right? Post by sandie99 on Nov 10th, 2007, 4:33am Thanks for the ideas, Kevin. :) I've heard so many stories how people got their jobs at journalism. I'd go crazy if I's start to think about it too much... I know that some get a call from one newspaper after they applied to another. One got a job at a radio station when she just walked in. Connections help, work experience helps, but then again, both can be dead ends. I have registered to several job hunting sites and I visit regularly our central employment's website and several other job sites. Usually the journalism jobs which appear end up in all of them or they're printed at a newspaper. Usually the magazines are cunning; they want a journalist, they will never tell anyone but hire someone they already know. That's why freelancing and trainee positions - should you find one - can be worth of gold. Now, I applied to that particular weekly because a) I read it weekly, b) I like it a lot and c) I happen to know that they do hire young journalists as trainees to get fresh outlook and to give someone worth it a chance. I'm keeping my thumbs up, because that trainee job comes with a salary and a chance to work at one of our biggest magazine publishing houses! :) Sanna |
