A little bit ago I heard unfamiliar chirping sounds coming from the feeder outside. I looked out there and saw these birds, which I have never seen before in the 10 yrs we've lived out here. Can anyone tell me what they are? They looked to be about 5" long.

They are evening grosbeaks, Coccothraustes vespertina.

I've seen them only once or twice in many years in upper MI. Thought they were some type of finch. I'll call them Morning Mellys.

Yellow sunshine with a winging cloud drifting through and a dark head coloring with blonde roots. ;)

Ya know, we have regular Grosbeaks around here, which are my favorite bird next to the Indigo Bunting (which is pretty much phased out now :(), and was stunned as to the size of these birds, but now it makes sense!! How cool, thanks Potter & George! :)

Well, it was VERY brief that they were here for, I'm so glad I got to see them! Now the Junco's, Chickadee's, Yellow & House Finches are back.

What a neat thing to experience this morning.

Long ago, when I lived in the midwest, we used to see indigo buntings at the feeders at just that time of the year.

We don't have indigo buntings in Idaho, but we do have the western version--lazuli buntings.

And yes--they only show up here in the valley in mid-winter.

Bill, they have not come around here for the past 4 or 5 years now. I don't know what happened to them other than I think the house finches have been pushing them out. Quite sad really.

Sorry brew darling, it's the Junkos that come in the winter.

Indigo Buntings are around during the summer - I see a few every year. They appear gray most times until the sun catches them just right and then there's that flash of brilliant blue. Always a treat.

The Rosebreasted grosbeak comes by about the same time as the Orioles - April and May. Have never seen a yellow grosbeak - thanks for sharing them!

They'r definitely not Oomedoodle birds cos they got legs. ;;D
