Title: Just a little vent
Post by Saffy on Nov 2nd, 2007, 11:28am
Bl**dy GP

Whew feel a bit better for that already.

Went to GP to ask for an abortive, other than energy drinks, just for nighttime hits, in particular O2. Told he hadn't heard of this so suggested he looked it up on this an Ouch site, left him with literature.

Returned as agreed 2 and a half weeks later to be told basically, oh although neuro put you on Topamax it doesn't mean he is saying you have CH. So if you want anything for CH you need to prove you have it first?! However he didn't refer me back to the neuro?!

Saffy very angry

Oh Saffy, what a prick!!  I'm so sorry dear. :(

Are you going to phone him and tell him there's no way you can prove it unless he refers you to a neuro?

Had the exact same thing happen to me about 6 weeks ago.  Trust me, I know how frustrating it is!!

Sorry that you had to go through that!

Saffy - you have already seen a neuro haven't you?

If so, phone the hospital and ask to speak to the neuro's secretary and ask for an appt ASAP and to call you with any cancellations. You don't need to go through your GP anymore once you are already on a neuro's patient list.  :)

Hope it helps, if you want to ask anything anytime I'm about to pm you my phone number okay?
Helen

Thank you all Soooo much for cheering me up.

Ghost the image of the club to the head - I laughed like a drain it did me goooooood!

Turns out I should have opened my post.

Stranger than fiction!

GP has written me a letter!!! Which says he has written to the neuro to ask about 02 useage, so maybe he has had a change heart, or maybe he has just recieved one for the very first time?! Or maybe he just wants to stall me for longer.....

Time will tell.

Or maybe he's out of his element and wants some approval for the treatment from the Neuro.  Either way it sounds like he's budging a little anyway.  Good luck hon.

For some reason my regular doc was liberal with prescribing trex but hesitant about oxygen, I'm sure he wasn't aware of it though for clusters when I told him.  Even so, he seemed resistant but gave me a neuro referral for it, which worked out.

I've read before by someone about regular docs and oxygen scripts not being their first choice for some reason.  His writing will save you the appointment cost and time, perhaps without another neuro evaluation.  Keep a log in case a referral to go back is needed but hope it works out sooner for you.    :)

My GP is the one who wrote the perpetual script for O2. He did that while I was waiting to get in to see my neuro.

It's still my GP's O2 script that's on file with Apria some 14 years later.

Why is it that some Drs are so afraid of prescribing something so harmless as O2, but will prescribe opiates if you go in complaining about the slightest pain in the back (unprovable), or a toothache, etc., or will willingly prescribe barbituates if you say you have trouble sleeping, (unproveable), or will gladly prescribe valium or one of its derivitaves if you say you feel a little bit down and depressed (again, unproveable).  Each of these has its proper place and usage, but they are given out so easily, and are so easily abused and are so addictive.

What is it about a piece of paper on the wall that says they completed successfully a study of the medical arts that makes them God?  They who know so little about our malady are also unwilling to learn and fulfill the Hypcratic (his was hypocritic) to first do no harm, and then to do good.

Sorry, but I just had to spew after that.  Your health system really scares me over there.  To think that is what they are trying to install here in the states.  2 1/2 weeks to be unable to give you an answer?  That is ridiculous!!!

In fairness Jerry - there are just as many if not more of you there in the US who can't get O2 because not only will your doctors not agree but your insurance companies won't supply it. How many of you there are having to use welders O2? Not CHOOSING to use it but having no choice?

At least here we can tel the doc we are going to the primary care trust (ie over his head) and that they will allow it given that O2 costs about £1.50 per day as opposed to £56 for the two Imitrex we are allowed by law. Our doctors here can't argue that one either although they do try. Quite simply, here we can hit them squarely in the budget to make them see reason.

For you its the opposite. God forbid the drug companies lose a quick buck by people using a cheap old treatment like O2.

What sucks is that people are suffering needlessly and however you look at it, it all boils down to money  >:(

Stupidity is not limited to one country sadly  :-/

Helen,

Sorry to imply that it is only the British system that is at fault.  I know that we have many Drs here in the states who aren't any better.  I've just noted that within the British, French, and Canadian systems there is less of a market push for the Drs to do more.  This is not just related to CH, but other problems as well.  There have been several cases with family members and friends from out of the US who have been unable to get proper care, or have had to wait intolerably long for it.

I agree fully with you that the drug companies do much to hinder use of less expensive treatment for the profit motive.

Then there's my experience of doctors telling us that they don't have time to use the internet. While I understand this, it would be nice if they took care of their patients though....even if that entails checking us out.

Damn rectal apertures.
