Well, we already had the fires, so a nice 5.6 earthquake was a nice surprise today. Thank God is was just a teeny one...

Normally, I don't even pay attention to these things, but I'm on the third floor of a 70+ yr old building in downtown San Jose... things got a little shakey tonight.

Fubar, that must be a little scary. My house is a bungalow built on the Canadian shield (rock) so not much moves here.

About 15 years ago there was an earthquake a few hundred miles from here and sitting at the kitchen table "things started to feel woosie" and we did not know what was happening then we saw the comforter on our waterbed moving. We then saw the news that a quake had just happened but no damage. It was a 7. something, not exactly sure, but quakes are very rare here. Take care.

Yep. Now all we Californians can look forward to the winter land and mud slides that occur each yr. because people insist on building homes on the side of cliffs.

Shawn is correct in that we hardly ever take notice of the earthquakes anymore unless it's a huge one and 1/2 of California slides into the ocean.

Apparently this quake was the biggest in the Bay Area since the Loma Prieta quake 18 years ago. Hard to believe that was when the A's and Giants were in the World Series together. My 17 yr old wasn't even born yet.

in 2002 we had a 5.3 hit by my cabin in upstate NY and it was more than enough for me! Ceiling tiles came down, cupards spilled their guts as did the fridge. The sound seemed to eminate from within you. I couldn't imagine a 6.5 or above!

That was an awesome video, Jonny. That was at ground level, and I was on the third floor of a rickety hotel and the shaking was even more intense. I have to admit I like it.

Here is an animation from the USGS that shoes all the earthquake activity for the past week. Notice we've had 237 recorded quakes in this time. The activity right after is interesting too, I felt aat least 5 aftershocks and one really good one at 4pm today.

After a 5:54pm, March 10, 1933 quake in Long Beach where a 120 died due to poor construction and $50 million in depression dollars for property damage, state of CA enacted a law April 10, 1933. The state is empowered to review and approve all public school plans prior to construction with strict supervision during construction. To date, no public school in CA has failed in an earthquake. Charles Richter (magnetude scale) helped with assessing construction codes.

Sounds like your building was built when the state was aware of new regulations for buildings but they weren't in effect yet for other structures.
