Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay. The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They
feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows. The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3
million. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78. The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of
his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals. I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas.

He has a huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work and
harvesting by hand. He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays, and plant it later. We have six trees in our yard from the Prison. Yup, he was reelected last year with 83% of the vote.

Now he's in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural, that has a special hotline phone number painted on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations
and Customs Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the
border. He's kind of a "Git-R Dun" kind of Sheriff

AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:
Sheriff Joe Arpaio (In Arizona) who created the "Tent City Jail":
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then He Started Chain Gangs For Women So He Wouldn't Get Sued For Discrimination.

He took away cable TV Until he found out there was A Federal Court Order that Required Cable TV For Jails
So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again Only Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel. When asked why the weather channel He Replied, So They Will Know How Hot It's Gonna Be While They Are Working ON My Chain Gangs.

He Cut Off Coffee Since It Has Zero Nutritional Value.
When the inmates complained, he told them, "This Isn't The Ritz/Carlton.....If You Don't Like It, Don't Come Back."

He bought Newt Gingrich's lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until
it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers
can't afford to have for themselves.

Sheriff Joe was just reelected Sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona.

I really don't care for the guy. Hitler was very effective too.

I like his effectiveness- if the prisoners don't like it, don't do the crime!

And if Joe did do something illegal, then he should be prepared to be subjected to the same punishment.

I think the other prision systems should take lessons from him. Prison should be a place for "punishment" not moddlecoddling and dogooding. Do the crime to the time - not sit around on your butt and let the taxpayers pay for it.

It should be made where prisioners don't WANT to go BACK! and they should be self-supporting.

Prison does need reformed.

Here is an example of what happens to innocent people and what happens to the criminal:

Single parent making barely enough to live on gets hit by a criminal fleeing arrest for a traffic stop.

Victim is hurt badly and ends up in the hospital for 6 weeks. In the meanwhile, he/she loses their place to live because they cant pay. Their kids become a ward of the state because the parent cant afford to feed them.
When the victim gets out of the hospital, his/her entire savings are gone, owe $40,000 to the hospital, lost their kids, have to start over in life.

Now, the criminal spends a couple years in jail. Gets out and is relatively unscathed. Where is the justice there !?!?

Try to civilly sue some dirtbag who never earned an honest days pay in his life...think you'll collect?

One innocent life destroyed by a criminal who isn't even held accountable for his crimes.

My answer? Make the criminal work in prison to pay back the victim. They don't get out until the victim is made whole !!!

I'm sure the bloody ACLU would be outraged at this idea.

I personally don't see this as un Constitutional.... I just don't.

How would it be considered slave labour? If the criminal wants to pay the victim back out of his money, fine he gets released when his parole board thinks he is ready.

Fact is, NONE of them EVER pay back.

What about the cost of Police cars that get wrecked because of the criminals actions? Who pays for that !?!?!
Me? why should I !?!?

I'm for anything Constitutional that makes the criminal pay punitive damages back to the state & victim(s)

Just my opinion.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio forgot to mention how lucky they are to not be in the jungle with all the flying bugs! ;;D

I believe prisons should be self sustaining institutions.

If you work hard you get good cable channels, and if you don’t work you get sent to New Guinny! [smiley=laugh.gif]

Joe Arpaio is a true American who is actually doing the job he was elected to do without all the PC crap that is ruining our country.

I've seen Sheriff Joe on TV before (I think it was a documentury) and I believe:

1. He is saving the taxpayers $$$

2. He is doing his job to effectively reduce "repeat offenders"

3. By effectively doing his job he is saving the taxpayers even more $$$$

Could we maybe borrow him up here for a year or 10.

It's time our criminals here found out that jail time really means jail time! Get sentenced to life imprisonment here and it really means that you'll be out in about 10 years - maybe even less and the odd time, you might actually serve 13 years.

I say they need to get tough with criminals.

I guess it would have to be argued as to it's Constitutionality by a court of law.
But I would think demanding the IP addresses of visitors to a site without just cause or reasonable suspicion would be un Constitutional.

Printing his home address should be something Sheriff Joe takes up with the newspaper in a court of law.

That is why we have courts and hopefully they would do the right thing.

If he is wrong...so be it.
I do, however, think he is doing right as it relates to his jail procedures.

I like what the sheriff has done in relation to dealing with crime and punishment. I think the rest of the country could take a lesson from him. As to his extra-curricular activities, if he did something wrong, he should pay the price just like everyone else.

As to the controversy over obtaining ip addresses, here is a possible plausible explanation from a law enforcement point of view:

The news organization published the sheriff's home address.
Maybe because of that, he or his family is being stalked, threatened and/or vandalized.
During the course of any investigation into who might be doing these things, the investigator would need to know who all read the article and got his address.
The only way to get that is through the list of ip addresses of people that visited that page.

I could see the court ordering the information released to investigators in the case of the above scenario, but I think releasing ip addresses to anyone for other than for law enforcement investigation situations would be illegal.

I'm all for Sheriff Joe and his approach to crime and punishment. If the bleeding hearts want to yell - let them PAY and take it off the taxpayers. Inhumane my rear - they did the crime -prisions should not be country clubs - their places for punishment!!!! They should be self-supporting - prisoners should WORK!!!

I don't agree that they SHOULD have CABLE TV - why should they? It's a luxury that a lot of "working" people who've not committed a crime can't afford. they can't vote so why should they NEED to know what the news is (most of it right now is who's running for office anyhow). Give 'em a library and let 'em learn to READ. That's good for them - might rehibilitate them...

Let 'em grow their own food - farming is a "good job" train em for something on the outside -- maybe they can get jobs that our "guest workers" are taking now if and when they get out. I like the idea of the animal shelters and the Christmas tree farms.

Back when I was in school and studying Civics (do they even call it that any more) we were taught that Prisoners loose their Civil Rights when they're convicted -- now it looks like they "gain" more afterwards than they had to begin with. Have they changed the laws on that one while I was growing old?

YES, we need prison reform badly in this country. Time to write Congress and tell them they need to look into Sheriff Joe's organization and take notes. It's working in AZ - why not around the country? We could all start with our local county offices and go from there. It's a thought. Might be time to call our local Sheriff (he should be over the shock of me asking him to babysit with Caleb by now...).

I really can't complain about the results he has achieved so far. I don't like him at all as he is a loudmouth in love with himself. This is one of those things that works well if pursued quietly; like profiling. It works most of the time when you shut up about it.
