Title: The end of an era ...
Post by ClusterChuck on Oct 20th, 2007, 10:54pm
I know I am showing my age here, but tough shit!  LOL

Joey Bishop, the last of the five official Rat Packers died the other day ...  sigh

They were quite the entertainers, and, in their day, they were VERY influential ...

Peter Lawford         Sept. 7, 1923  Dec. 24, 1984    61
Sammy Davis, Jr.  Dec. 8, 1925    May 16, 1990    64
Dean Martin         June 7, 1917    Dec. 25, 1995   78
Frank Sinatra       Dec. 12, 1915  May 14, 1998    82
Joey Bishop         Feb. 3, 1918     Oct. 17, 2007    89

Most entertainers today don't hold a candle to those five!

Chuck

Glad you brought him up, Chuck.  Joey was one of my favorite comedians when I was a kid.  He really made me laugh for some reason.  A natural and an inspiration, I'll miss 'em.

Quote:
He served in WWII in the army and appeared on television as early as 1948, but it took a while before he caught on and became a major TV personality. A nitery specialist and opening act for a number of stars in the mid-'50s, he soon became a steadfast cog in the talk show, sitcom and game show circuits. A frequent and amusing guest panelist on "What's My Line?" (1950), the jug-eared jokester went on to guest-host on the "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" (1962) a record 177 times. He frequently appeared as a guest for Steve Allen and Jack Paar when they were hosts in earlier late-nite versions.

Don't know what happened to him, he disappeared from everywhere, even from the Rat Pack it seemed all of a sudden.     (edit: found an answer)

Quote:
Bishop had previously met Sinatra when he served as the star's opening act. Writing material and serving as the emcee for many of the clan's Las Vegas shows in the 1960s, Bishop appeared in the "Rat Pack"-oriented movies Ocean's Eleven (1960) and Sergeants 3 (1962), but the straight-laced comedian later butted heads with the party-hearty Sinatra and split while the next film Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964) was in preparation.

I'm old enough. I never saw them live though...mostly on Johnny Carson

No doub't the original "Ocean's 11" will be running somewhere soon. Hard to beat.

RIP  Joey.

And Deborah Kerr, too.  She was stunning.
