What the fuck is wrong with people today?  What is with all the nooses in the news?  When did the noose become a symbol of racism?  I guess I blame the news media for promoting racism and fear mongering.  The noose in and of its self never was a symbol of anything but hanging.  Now the news has equated it to racism.  I guess the next thing will be anybody that has a bloodhound will be a racist.  The media should be ashamed for giving the real racists a platform.

You are a kind and wonderful gentleman. You must not let this shit affect you the way it does. Turn off the TV, stop reading the news, and pursue things that truly interest you.

The world is mad, but it hasn't gone that way recently. It's been that way for quite some time (right around the time that Eve ate the apple).

Life is too short to allow bullshit to seep into your soul. Read a book, paint a landscape, play an instrument. Whatever it is, you must constantly wear your bullshit filter. You'll be much more content. Hell, look at me - I don't give a rat's ass about any of that crap anymore. I'm happier than I've ever been.

Paul remember there was a "Jena is in Syracuse" protest on the campus while I was there? Its just an excuse for people to get out of work - or for a free coke at McDonalds or to get their face on TV.

I'm not belittling racism but I never saw this whole thing as racist in the first place, it was more like bullying if anything. Just because someone doesn't like you it doesn't make it "racist" if you aren't the same colour.

People don't like me and it's not cos their sexist.. they're just sensible!!

I skip the front page of the newspaper, read the local section to see who I know got arrested or married...or married and arrested, then the sports section just to see what excuse my Padres will have for losing in the first round next year. Then I dump it all in the recycle bin. I agree with Brew....lots-o-bad stuff happens every day, I ignore that which doesn't directly affect me. Keeps me a much calmer soul. ;)

there is the national association for colored people, the african american community fund, arican american alumni association, african american scholarship fund,  ebony magazine, african american chamber of commerce, etc, etc, etc....for them this is not Racism...

why is not appropiate for  them to have: The white people magazine, the white people community fund, the white people chamber of commerce, etc, etc, etc

In all seriousness, we've already beat this subject to DEATH talking about racists... the one who PROMOTE race-identification, race-seperation, and racial differences.  It's all well and good to do it in the name of 'eliminating racism', but we all know the intentions are exactly the opposite.

And its coming to America fast, Schools in Maine are right now planning on giving girls 11-13 birth control and the school dosent even have to notifiy the parents.

Placing a noose on a tree where black people were told to leave and didn't is the same as putting a swastika on the home of a Jewish person who was told not to move into the neighborhood.  If you don't see the noose as a racist act, then re-read your history.  This country was almost destroyed by traitors and racists during the Civil War (and the "States Rights" argument has as much validity as the Nazi's saying "I was just following orders.) and after that war was over, the hanging of Black people in the southern states was a common occurance and was rarely prosecuted.  It has not been that long since overt racism has been outlawed; the noose incident is a reminder that ignorant people still have not learned their lesson.  One day this country will have more non-white than white citizens and I hope that they will treat us better than we have treated them.

Epidsodic from 1980-94, chronic from 1994 to the present with no more than a week or so a year with somewhat of a break.  Worked for the US Dept. of Defense and NATO until this year when I had to take a medical retirement because the pain became a hinderance to my work.

I agree the noose CAN be used as a symbol of racism... But that's not the only thing it has been used for!!!
It all depends on how and where and even why it is used in a display that should dictate whether or not it's being used in a racist manner.
This article is obviously just people with too much time on their hands, wanting to cause a stink.
IF the display was put up at a place where blacks congregate, then yes... Racism. Or... And here's one a little different..
The article read the figure in the noose was black hooded... How well would it go if a black family hung this in a white neighborhood with a WHITE hooded figure in it? Now THAT obviously would have some racist (kkk) tones to it. But then, in that scenario, it would be "ok". That's just expressing one's freedoms, right?!?!

First of all Van, "WE" didn't treat anyone bad.
Most of "WE" live our lives in relative anonymity and shouldn't be held responsible for the acts of "OTHERS"

For your edification, this is about as far from the truth as the press/et al can spin it.  

FYI, this tree was planted in the 1980's (aha, not planted during the civil rights era as told by some idiots).

The black students asked the principal if they could sit under the tree (why, noone knows, since the *tree* in question didn't belong to any particular race).  They were assured that anyone could sit under the tree.

Shortly thereafter, 2 nooses appeared in the tree.  The culprits were found, placed in alternative school for 9 days, had a psych eval done, had to go through court appointed counseling, 2 weeks in detention and something else (the boys denied that they were doing anything racist and didn't know what import the meaning had).

Fast forward to Dec. 4, when 6 black boys jumped 1 white kid, blindsided him, knocked him completely out and proceeded to kick the shit out of him.  Kid went to the hospital where they worked on him for 3 hours.

DA in LaSalle Parish has a temporary moment of insanity and decides to make an example out of the kids and charges 5 of them with attempted murder.  Justin Bell was the first one that went to trial, he was found guilty, sent to jail for 22 years (let's not forget that this young man had 3 seperate convictions as a juvenile and was on probation until he was 18).

And the Jena 6 was born, the brainchild of Rev(s) Sharpton and Jackson.

As someone who lives about an hour and half from Jena, let me tell you....this whole ordeal has been beaten to death.  No pun intended.  I remember last December when the news first reported that 6 people beat up on 1 person.  I was outraged.  Did the DA make a mistake in charging the kids? Yes.  Do I believe Mychal Bell deserves stronger punishment than the others? Yes, he has a past record and was on probation for assault.  I do not believe this was ratially motivated to the extent that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have made it.  I think the Barker kid was just mouthing off, and said the wrong things to the wrong group of kids.  But no one should have to be beaten down in a 6 against 1 brawl.  They could have easily killed the boy or permanently injured them.  

As for Jesse Jackson, I have no respect for him.  I especially wonder how he can still be considered a "Reverend" when he's had how many extramarital affairs and how many illegitimate kids.  No offense but I just don't believe this is how a "man of God" is to act.

And as for the school in Maine giving out birth control.  I say good for them.  I had a graduating high school class of 93, 47 of us we female, and 27 of my female classmates had at least one child.  One of my classmates got pregnant when she was in 6th grade, and had 3 more before graduation.  So if the parents aren't going to do something about their kids having sex, then I'm glad the schools are stepping it up.  Cause kids are going to have sex, and if they're are not taught and given ways to protect themselves, then we would have more kids raising kids out there.

I always heard - if you do the crime be prepared to do the time -- Bell was WRONG - now he needs to do the time. The others were in on the act - they danced - now it's time to pay the fiddler.

Sharpton and Jackson need to have their mouths duct-taped! All they do is stir up SH*T and why ANYONE would listen to them is beyond my understanding.

As a product of the 50s I've watched Civil Rights from day one and it's gone from a "good idea" to a nightmare of govermental interferance thanks to the likes of the Jacksons and Sharptons. Equality (as was intended) has become a thing of the past.

But it all goes back to the fact that WE as a nation have LET this happen by our apathy and "The government knows best!" We keep electing politicians who just keep on making these stupid laws that keep on making our lives miserable and we KEEP letting it happen. WE have become AFRAID of OUR government. That's sad. WE are afraid to write, call, e-mail our ELECTED officials in protest of their votes (if we even know how they vote) for fear of retalliation from THEM. We just sit and bitch among ourselves, but don't do a damn thing where it will do some good.

The local, and national news shows are so pitiful that they will grab any story and run with it, for as long as the people who watch these programs will allow it.Then you have a couple of loose cannons out in the audience who will start hanging nooses from trees and out the news trucks will come. The only ones to blame are us, because we should  just stop watching or reading this nonsense.

In my High School in Vegas I was in the Minority.  The School was 55% blaock and %35 precent Hispanic.  That left the rest of us in the minority and that did not take into acount the Asians, ect...  

People used to freak out because a firnd of mine was "darker then the ace of spades" as my dad would say.  He was a sweet heart and we where great firends. One day, the lights went out in calass and he told me to turn up my hair (I was a bright ass platinum blonde when I was younger) and I told him to smile.  People got pissy with me for saying that and he laughed his ass off.
