Title: ? on baby kittens
Post by BMoneeTheMoneeMan on Oct 15th, 2007, 12:17am
A cute kitty decided to move into my utility room.  About 2 weeks later, the cute kitty had 4 kittens.  It's been 20 years since I have had kittens.
When are you supposed to give them food?  It's been about 3 weeks now, all they have had is mommy's milk so far.  I put some canned food in with them, but they didn't eat it.  What kind of food is good to start, something like Kitten Chow?

Thanks
B$

They may not be ready for it yet, Brian.  Just leave water and food for them, and they'll eat when it's time.  They're pretty little yet at three weeks.

Dry kitten food is fine.  Start 'em out right with a good one--Science Diet or Iams--something like that.

Best,

George

Yeah, I'm with George. Between 4 and 6 weeks is when they usually wean. I think...it's been more than 20 years for me. Kittens are so cute.

Just in case you were wondering, B$, I think Charlotte meant pictures of the kittens, not your ugly mug. ;)

We have a litter right now and they started eating around 4-5 weeks (the litter before them didn't start until they werfe 6 weeks old).  Purina kitten chow is fine, that's what I feed.
No canned food though, not good for them.  Just make sure mama has plenty of food and water.

They are good in stew, but even better as tacos. ;;D

Useful for insulating water pipes, great as chocks if you have to park on a slope, will keep a burlap bag on the bottom of a lake, awesome for teaching a good retriever hot to chase and catch prey.......(aww relax all you PETA"S Guiseppi has a cat!!!!!!)

Mike, Mike, Mike   [smiley=nono.gif]  By the time you get them all skinned and de-boned, there's not enough meat to make a good stew unless you have 20 or 30.

A good litter of 6 will make a fine stew for 2  ;) ;;D

Just leave some dry food and water down for them and the mother.
I hand raised Ringo and Pixel. And they both took to dry food at about 5 weeks. I started them on Purina Kitten Chow. And at 11.5 Lbs. and 20 Lbs.  it doesn't seem to have done them any harm.

The vet I used to work for fed them evaporated milk if they were healthy.

Just be glad they didn't come from a feral mother. It took two weeks before he would approach us - with much coaxing. Of course, he was taking medicine those two weeks and had to trapped to give it to him.

Still, he has accommodated. Now he won't leave us alone. Stupid feline.
