It does look like a starter motor.  The extra gear on the top has me confused though.

It really looked to me like a GM starter with the seleniod attached.. BUT... Since you said it's not automotive.....

A few of you were close enough, heres what it is.

Honda Motor announced that it has developed the Human-Friendly Transmission (HFT), a new automatic transmission system for motorcycles using Honda’s own infinitely variable hydraulic mechanical transmission. Easy to operate, the HFT realizes outstanding relaxed riding comfort, riding feel with direct response and excellent transmission efficiency. The HFT will be installed on the DN-01, a new motorcycle scheduled for market launch to be introduced at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show.

With Honda's own infinitely variable hydraulic mechanical transmission, this HFT realizes the lightweight and compact configuration required for motorcycles. To meet the wide range of rider needs, HFT offers a selection from two fully automatic shifting modes—D mode for ordinary riding and S mode for a sporty riding experience—or the 6-speed manual mode, which gives riders the option of riding with a manual transmission feel. The HFT creates a unique riding feel through easy operation, ranging from relaxed and laid-back riding to nimble and sporty with direct throttle response.

Or at least that is what I was told when I had my 1969 Honda 350,  my 1973 Honda 750, and my 1986 (?) Gold Wing ...

Did somebody say "rice burner?" Here is our 1972 kawasaki h2 750 blue meanie with the green colors instead of the original blue. Pic taken when Angie and I were dating back in 1980.

We were both on the rice rocket when we hit a car with it. Wish we had that new transmission back then, that thing shook all the bolts loose on the driveline every time we rode it. [smiley=laugh.gif]

anyone who wants an auotmatic motorcycle should stick to the step thru vespa type scooters!  ;;D

the only good reason to have an automatic motorcycle is fi you get stuck in traffic. saves the wrist from
clutch-itis.
