Title: Another school shooting?
Post by jimmers on Oct 10th, 2007, 9:52pm
WTF is going on with these kids nowadays?

When I was a kid and we had a problem with each other, we went out back by the garage and had a good old fashioned fist fight! Now, these little cowards just pull out a gun and start melting caps everywhere! I don't get it.

Full moon or what? :-/

I blame Mr Rogers for telling kids that they are special, for decades this fuck was telling kids they deserved shit they didnt have to earn.....Kids today think they are owed something and they have no sense of making it on their own.

When I got bullied in school I took it, my older brother told me that I had to fight back. A few years later the bullies paid and I didnt hold back!.....Guess who got arrested?

I don't know, but I do know this: In the NFL, the guy who retaliates is the one who gets penalized about 95% of the time. ;;D

Remember firedrills?? The school I teach in has Code Red drills. The kids learn how to prepare in the case of the most extreme cirumstances. My school is brand new and built with double doors, an incredible lock system and security cameras everywhere. It's amazing too who we are protecting the kids from, not terrorists but people we all know who woke up on the wrong side of the bed with major anger management issues! School violence really is scary and it happpens everywhere.

I have to say, I'm old but never saw a knife or pistol at any school attended.  Appointments were made off school grounds to settle.  Although settling a few confrontations was done by hashing with each other beforehand and talking if that attempt was made for the misunderstanding.
Not necessarily out of fear but friends were made between potential combatants when discussing the matter instead of being escalated through word of mouth and instillers who wanted to see it happen.
Certain matters today perhaps involve too much pride, reputation and drug territory.  As for pride and reputation, it can be better thought of as uninfluenced by others and having a reputation for quality traits instead of displaying toughness, that reputation can attain one possibly much more, even in the wrong element.  Pride can suck when seen in another person and not indispensable when things get serious enough.  I've made friends and reputations by making the correct decision on pride.

When in junior high, the Marine gym teacher would make us trade swats if fooling around, and if you didn't hit the other guy hard enough, you got it again from him.  If continued, he'd go to his office and to get the gloves out and throw them at each telling them "we're all going to wait for you two girls to get this over with now."
Most found they weren't actually that mad at each other and that would be the end of it now, so saying gym teacher.  Once again, friends were made between the two.  If battled, again, it was decided and a mutual respect even resulted for going at it, always forced to shake hands.  So there was some character built with each outcome.

The present unreasonableness of some actions and their results does seem so unresolving and lacking of the character I've seen displayed in the past possibly involving more alienation and not thinking.

I don't even know what happened but it seems more terrible than I've ever experienced, and there have been extremely heavy situations in the past that have been confronted and most every one of these persons lacking character would not imagine even being involved in.

Sorry so long, I'm old and been in and seen enough, perhaps obselete now..

This whole story is upsetting.  I used to live outside of Cleveland in Vermilion, Oh.  This past July, I went back to Cleveland for my childhood best friend, Megan's wedding.  Her husband, John, works at a Vo-Tech school in Cleveland.  I called and left a message earlier with her hoping that John doesn't actually work at the school where the shooting happened, but I haven't heard back from her yet.  I'm saying lots of prayers that John was not at that school!!!

Sad that kids are this distressed these days...

Things were always better in "the old days".  Look at violence in 18th and 19th century Europe and America and what we have now is a pittance.  Our kids will be talking about the "good old days" when they have kids.  Although horrible, these incidents are rare but they do sell papers.  Now, when I was a kid, we settled things with "zip guns (anyone remeber those?)", fists and baseball bats.

Well, a lot can be said for the "good old days" and the school systems back then and the "parents" back then. Actually we had "parents" back then that taught us right from wrong and teachers that actually gave a damn. Schools were for learning the 3 r's - not for political correctness and all this other bull they've "mandated" these days.

We never had to be TOLD - don't take a gun or knife to school. In fact during hunting season, if a guy got a new rifle, he probably DID bring it to school to show off (left in car or truck for lunch time)- and some of the teachers probably had theirs in their cars to show off to the guys (or gals as the case might have been). It was a braggin' thing.

All the doors were left open during the day without fear of terrorists or anyone being shot. We were there to "learn" not fear for our lives.

But if we had problems with each other, there was usually a fist fight during the lunch hour and a coach was usually there to supervise it. A lot of bloody noses were patched up before afternoon classes and guys (and gals sometimes) went back to class the best of friends after the differences were worked out.

We didn't get arrested for drinking beer (if caught) - we just got our beer taken away and our parents notified - worse than any jail sentence! And our class was notorious for keeping the Chief supplied in beer. I've personally had my share of, "Girl what am I gonna do with you?" lectures.

But until parents take back control of kids and the schools, we're gonna keep seeing this stuff. And the news media is gonna keep blowing it up and giving more kids ideas. The politicians have "improved" our school systems to the point now that our kids are not getting an education, but are being put in danger and coming out robots not knowing what the real world is about. I know I know -- I'm old and the world is changing and I need to catch up on the "modern" things, but some things need to be thought over and see that they're just not working!

Amen Barb.

I'm from the old-school scrapper days too, when character and respect was not only taught at home and it school, it was built and earned on the playground after school.

I guess we can point the blame finger in any number of directions and would probably be correct in all. But the first place to point said finger is inward.

My heart goes out to those families affected in this recent tragedy.

It's scary, and it's a mess.  Having four teenagers in school I don't know what to think...you can't think it won't happen here...cause it is happening everywhere.  I also remember good old fashion there's gonna be a fight and we would all go to watch.  But I also remember a time when a girl had a knife and showed it to me.....nothing more though.  This world is totally screwed up....these kids have no fear of authority or any punishments they may receive....it's sad

Ya know, I frequent a pregnancy forum, and just today I came across a thread of moms who are STILL wiping their 4-7 year olds butts!  I was in complete disbelief reading that these women would coddle their kids like this because they wanted to make sure their kids bums were nice and clean due to their not trusting them to do a nice and neat job.  Well no shit, their still learning and messes like that are a part of it.

And they wonder why kids are so screwed up today. ::)

I read about it at our newspapers, too. Events like that make me always sad... :(

Can't say that the school system in here would be perfect, it's not and neither is the society. But it's been a relief that kids back here have not turned into school shooters - yet.

I do recall having 2 disturbed classmates, who both should have been sent to a school which takes better care of them a lot quicker than what they were. One guy even brought a tiny explosive to school and it exploned right in the middle of my Swedish class! Sure, it was so small thing that only the trash can and our ears were bit damaged for a while, but still...  :o

There was an urban legend that Fred Rogers had more sniper kills in Viet Nam than anyone else. Checked it out...not true. According to About.com

Saw his name mentioned...Don't know if anyone cares, but oh well.....

I mentioned in another thread just a day or so ago my nut shell views on this topic.

It's a damn shame that these kids are so ill prepared for life, reality, the real world, where not everything is fair, and not all people are created equal, and sometimes you just get screwed.  Thats the way it is.  You brood for a day or two and then you pull up those socks, tie the boots back on and move ahead.

It's not just parents faults.  It's the whole of society who wanted to end little Mikey's crying for getting chosen last for dodgeball.

I can't go off here...I have work to do.  But I'll try to revisit this tonight when I'm baking brownies for the United Way tonight.

To add:  On a side note, my brother calls this  morning to inform me that his 21 year old son, (still lives at home) has just told him he's quitting his job because he's sick of working.  He's been a line cook at a casino for 3 years and the front night dinner lead cook for a year.

Ok, so whats his plan?  Who knows.  My brother has taken his paycheck, and paid the kids bills for him, giving the kid an allowance out of his own damn money.  This kid wouldn't know how to pay his own car payment if need be.

True, very true. The difference? TV. Every time I turn on the news...even 30 hours later....it's still "breaking news."

News has been "broken" all right.

There is something to an increased alienation that is fueled by TV and games too. These kids have a strong code of silence of course and they don't think the worst of any one of them could be real.  It seems that they don't know that they can't just change the channel and get back to before the fact. That said; old cowboy movies and tv showed an awful lot of violence but it was far from reality. We never saw blood or a bullet hole. If they were killed, it was pretty antiseptic. I don't understand why it didn't have a similar effect on my generation.

Still, historically, it's uncommon; spectacular but rare.

I find it amazing that TV is still being blamed for the downfall of Western Civilization.  Of the hundreds of millions of people watching TV, very, very few go out and commit crimes of violence or other serious crimes.  There are a group of people commonly known as "sociopaths" who fill our prisons and commit most of our crimes.  They have no concscience, no empathy and want what they want when they want it no matter what.  They have a serious personality disorder that cannot be cured and have been around since time and crime immemorial.  Befroe TV they listened to radio and before that, if they could read, they read "dime novels" and "True Crime", from which they may have gotten ideas but they would have committed crimes anyhow as they don't see their behavior as wrong.  The smarter ones become politicians-look at the current bunch in Washington and your state legislators.  One generation lamenting that the current generation has no respect for law, etc., has been going on for thousands of years and will continue.  Fortunately, sociopaths, while filling most of our prisons, are a relatively small group of people.  Despite the current trajedy, which I believe was caused by some sort of short circuit in the kid's synapses, it is an isolated event, thank god.  We have more to worry about our "leaders" and their inane policies, than common criminals or mentally disturbed high school students.

Just my opinion...

#1. When Corporal punishment was removed from schools, that is when things
began to go down hill.
A big percentage of us got "swats" & we survived.
If you didn't do something wrong, just seeing the end result at school [swats]
if you did misbehave was a deterrent.
Heck most of us "got it" when we got home too.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporal_punishment

#2. Parents for years have let T.V. & video games be children's babysitters &
in turn, examples of morality & values. :(
We all know the garbage shown on T.V. these days [& for years] & the violence in video games makes the kids jaded/desensitized to said violence...some of the games they play are VERY graphic.

#3. Children that live in a violent households tend to be abusers themselves.
It is true, the problem starts at home much of the time.

Mom Of Teen With Weapons Cache Charged

POSTED: 8:09 am EDT October 12, 2007
UPDATED: 11:32 am EDT October 12, 2007

The mother of a 14-year-old home-schooled student who had a cache of guns, knives and explosive devices in his bedroom was charged Friday with six counts for buying him three weapons.

Michele Cossey bought her son a .22-caliber handgun, a .22-caliber rifle and a 9 mm semiautomatic rifle, authorities said.

Cossey, 46, of Plymouth Meeting, bought the rifle, which had a laser scope, at a gun show on Sept. 23 and provided police with a receipt, investigators said in court papers. The teenager said the two .22-caliber weapons were stored at a friend's house.

The teen was charged as a juvenile with solicitation to commit terror and other counts and was being held at a youth facility. The teen had a brief court appearance Friday at which he was ordered to remain in juvenile detention.

His mother was charged with unlawful transfer of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a minor, corruption of a minor, endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of reckless endangerment.

Authorities said the home-schooled teenager felt bullied and had talked about mounting a Columbine-type attack at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, authorities said, claiming he even had tried to recruit another boy to help in the attack.

The 14-year-old was taken into custody after police acted on a tip and raided his home in Plymouth Township on Wednesday after his parents allowed investigators to search the home.

Prosecutors said police found a 9 mm semiautomatic rifle, air guns, homemade explosive devices, a bomb-making book, videos of the 1999 Columbine attack in Colorado and violence-filled notebooks.

Home Schooling: Bad idea all around.

By the way Vanster, you and I have similar ideas about crime rates. They are way down over the last 35 years. You wouldn't know it watching cable "news" and all the inane realitiy shows that only exist because they are so incredibly lucrative. I mean seriously; they must be running out of prisons to tour by now.

What TV does is waste time. So does sitting here in front of this screen but there is at least some interaction here. TV just plain sucks. I watch less and less of it every day but then I'm an old geezer. I still think that it gets in the way of real life and I learned the hard way.http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/remote.gif

Luckily for us, we don't watch TV anymore. ;) The blessing of digital age; you can have an old set at home, but unless you have a digi box, you won't see any programmes.

I bet that one of these years they'll blame the internet, too....

We keep blaming so much. The teachers blame the parents, the parents blame the school. Maybe we need to start from the beginning when our kids are very young. Bill Cosby wrote in his book "All I Need To Know I learned In Kindergarten", that the purpose of Kindergarten is to tame children. I thought it was a joke but he really was serious. We have kids that come to school ready to learn then we have others coming in smelling of urine, aggressive with absolutely no discipline. The parents don't show up for scheduled meetings and PTA's. In the meantime Bush is pushing No Child Left Behind and we continue to lose money for special programs dealing with anger management and early intervention.  It seems we used to do more at PTA to help parents with parenting skills than we do now. Now we do math workshops to help bring up scores to meet No Child Left Behind. It's all a big mess but maybe if we help educate parents and start with the youngest most troubled we may get somewhere.
