my 18 year old son wants to get his first,problem is he wants to get a rose in the lower naval area.Granted this rose is cool (looks like it will cut you if you touch it) but i'm concerned about 1st -placement & 2 -its still a rose. do you think i need to worry about this? [smiley=confused2.gif]

I'm trying to picture what my reaction would be if I were to find a guy with a tat near their bikini line and it being a rose....

In a way it's sexy, in another, well...it's a rose. :-/

Not sure what else would go good there tho, so I'd tell him to think on it for at least 2 months! ;;D

He's 18, like Thomas said, it's a real good sign that he's talking to you about it.  In the end it's only ink and you won't see it unless he's shirtless (or wears a belly shirt  :-X ).

What's the back-story on the rose anyway.  There has to be one.

thats part of the problem, theres no back story,I ask hi m why a rose and the response is always because i think it would be cool, i realize he's 18 and he'll do it anyway. It just dont sit well with me. sometimes i think he's just fuckin with me. I can only hope!

It goes not have to be a skull and cross bones to make him manly.  Especially if the artist is good.

My hubby has a rose, granted not at the bikini line.  It is on his upper arm wrapped around my and our kids names.  Granted in the middle of it is a skull with a top hat smoking a cig that he got while in the army.   ;)

Look dont worry about it. It could just be the fact that he is getting it for his girlfriend and he will realize when he is a littel older that it was not a good choice.  She is probably telling him how sexy it is.   As long as he does not start wearing hip huggers and half shirts , it should be fine.

Being a complete smart-@ss in most situations, I might ask why not a lily or a daffadil, what's wrong with a petunia?

I don't know, I've seen roses but with the reminding wrapping thorns about love or a dagger through it but on shoulder areas and arms.
 
I like tattoos but am not tattooed, so my opinion is irrrelevant.  Your mention of fucking with you and bouncing the idea is a gamble.  I remember telling the old man I wanted to shoot pool or play rock for a living about that age only I wasnt' fucking with him, just perhaps very interested though naive and gave both a shot, and no, he didn't want to hear that.   ;;D

Is the rose tat his idea or his girlfriend's idea?

I agree with Jonny regarding the cover-up work that can be done but the pelvic area can be pretty tender territory for a tat and then a cover-up if he changes his mind in a few years.

IMHO....a tat....go for it.
       .....a rose on an 18 year old male's pelvis....um..not!

Would make me wonder about him if I was his next girlfriend.

I think what you are really wondering, but not saying directly, is: "Is my son gay?"

I hope not.  It is a difficult life to live.  And even worse, when you do as I did, and deny yourself to yourself and the world.  I was married (to a woman) for just over thirty years, until SHE forced me to see the truth.  Everyone tells me that I seem to be MUCH happier, now that I have admitted to myself, and to the world, "This is me.  This is who I am."

Is your son gay, because he wants a rose under his belly button?  Maybe.  Maybe not.  But whatever the answer is, remember, he is your son, and you love him.

Yes, we all wish for the easier road for our children, but most times, that is not the way it works out.  Whatever the answer turns out to be, make sure he knows that you still love him just as much as you always have.  Never let him wonder if you still love him, or that you are proud to call him "Son."

A rose is not what I would pick, but I am not him, nor are you him.  Let him do his thing.  It is his time to make his mark in the world.  If it is a rose, and he is gay, so be it.  If it is a rose, and he is straight, so be it.

Just always be his loving, and supportive father.

Seriously, though.... If that's what he wants, then trying to talk him out if it is just gonna make him want it that much more (if he's anything like most "kids" that age). I wouldn't worry about it. Just suggest he gives it a little thought before he does it. They don't just "go away" if you decide a month later you don't want it.
No matter what, it IS a good thing that he talked to you about it. Sounds like you have a great relationship with him, and that kind of relationship will out last the tatto.

If he is my son I will take him to a tattoo parlour and get him to watch the whole session on how it is done, the pain, the needles, the blood, the having to sit or lie still for hours ..... then I will take him to the laser centre where people who developed regrets after having a tattoo get theirs removed, he will get to watch the laser beam burning the skin, the pain, the swelling and redness afterwards .... I will also show him pictures of scars that may result from various attempts to have a tattoo removed ....

Lastly I will give him a stick-on rose tattoo to try for a couple of weeks, then it will be his decision.

I think sometimes my kids hate me  :P

The kid wants a rose, my father has a rose with "mother" tattoed with a banner on his forearm, with many many many other tats.

Its ink, its a rose, who gives a fuck, just tell him not to put "dad" on the banner.

However, I do not believe this has any gay connotation
to it whatsoever.  The Red Rose has always been the symbol
for 'The Lover' or 'Eternal Love' - in a generic sense.
Being in the arts I have never to date come across a gay
connection to the red rose. I can think of dozens of gay
symbols that a gay male would specifically want placed in
that location but somehow a rose wouldn't be a first choice.

Hmmmm... I wasn't quite sure if he was questioning his sons sexuality as much as his judgement. I guess if he was close enough with his son he would just already know or wouldn't have a problem asking him.

My parents knew I was gay before I told them in spite of the fact that I always had a beautiful girl on my arm. When I finally vocalized it when I was 19 all my father had to say about it was "So what?" My mother said something like "God made you the way he wanted you to be, and that's fine with me."

Besides... it would be a silly assumption to make all based on the picture of a rose...

Chuck you don't have to be sorry about anything bro, I love you for you being you. What you said was VERY well said, however, I just didn't think the tattoo had anything to do with anybody's sexual orientation, its just a rose.
