Title: Re: I know its finally getting colder when.... Post by Brewcrew on Oct 9th, 2007, 8:06am One of my favorite cold-weather jokes from TV history: Norm (walking into Cheers): Hey, everybody! Everybody: NORM! Sam Malone: What's up, Norm? Norm: My nipples. It's freezing out there. -------------------------------- P.S. - Jimbo, I owe you a phone call. Sometime today, hopefully. |

Title: Re: I know its finally getting colder when.... Post by jimmers on Oct 9th, 2007, 8:18am Yep, I love Autumn. Especially up at the farm. Come in from bow hunting with my Son, walking up to the warm cabin and smelling something delicious coming from the stove. (We take Mom with us!) ;) Mom keeps Dad warm at night to! ;) Jimmers |

Title: Re: I know its finally getting colder when.... Post by George_J on Oct 9th, 2007, 9:52pm Cooler weather cooking it is-- Roasted a chicken today, and boiled some baby yukon gold potatoes. Steamed broccolini for a vegetable. Made Ellen happy by putting together an apple crisp from some freshly-picked Romes from Emmett. Real whipped cream. Best, George |

Title: Re: I know its finally getting colder when.... Post by Emily on Oct 10th, 2007, 8:19am Mmm... In my house when it gets cold, we have typical British food - sausages (pork and leek usually) and mashed potatoes with onion gravy, yorkshire puds and steamed veg. Yum!! I am so hungry now... |

Title: Re: I know its finally getting colder when.... Post by BarbaraD on Oct 10th, 2007, 8:19am Pot Stew... Putting it on now... Went outside and it's actually "nippy" -- I LOVE IT!!!! Now if it would just stay that way.... Jimbo - Carolyn -- wanna come up for a meet and greet? I'm in a cooking mood.... This weather is just perfect ... Maybe we can get some of those Dallas and Houston clusterheads up for the weekend and have a really fun time -- it's hunting season and the squirrels are going crazy (as are the hogs). Bow season for the deer and they're running all over the roads, so I guess they're lookng for grub too... Some good backstrap wouldn't be bad right now -- fried taters, biscuits, honey... um um good!!!! Did I mention, I just love FALL weather.... Hugs BD |

Title: Re: I know its finally getting colder when.... Post by sandie99 on Oct 10th, 2007, 10:55am It's been the coldest day in here so far. Mittens and a hat are needed, winter coat is a must. Funny, but this fall I'm into soups. Must be the great chicken soup Timo & I made... or the yummy vegetables. :) Sanna |

Title: Re: I know its finally getting colder when.... Post by thomas on Oct 10th, 2007, 12:19pm I am going to make chilli on Friday, it should be just about perfect, come Monday. Being born and mostly raised in the south, I'll NEVER understand the whole ribs and kraut thing. I love ribs and I love sauer kraut, but together no way. |

Title: Re: I know its finally getting colder when.... Post by Melissa on Oct 10th, 2007, 12:27pm Thomas, here in central WI, they eat polish sausage & kraut. Or brats & kraut. I hate kraut myself. Hubby just canned some homemade kraut & he had to let it sit in a 5 gallon bucket for 6 weeks! :P I couldn't use the laundry/bath room 4 weeks into it. Kept the door shut. |

Title: Re: I know its finally getting colder when.... Post by Brewcrew on Oct 10th, 2007, 1:07pm Ribs and kraut a southern Wisconsin thing? I hardly think so. The ribs and kraut are seasoned with caraway, onion, and a good-sized spoonful of half-sharp Hungarian paprika. After cooking all day, the rib meat falls off the bone and is served literally boneless. It is then scooped - juice and all - onto a bed of homemade potato gnocci (little bite-sized dumplings). My bride, who otherwise HATES sauerkraut, loves this dish and makes it very well. It doesn't sound all that great, but I told her after we were done last night that what I just ate was some of the finest food I have ever had - without exception. And I meant it sincerely. The key is the cooking time - 5-6 hours. |

Title: Re: I know its finally getting colder when.... Post by Tiannia on Oct 10th, 2007, 1:38pm Crock pot is my favorite thing in the fall/winter. I can put a frozen roast in before going to work and when I get home dinner is ready. This morning I put frozen chicken brests in and dumped a botten or Spagu sauce over it. Tonight, Chicken Parmesain. YUM This is what I get for being german and marrying an italian. I cool him chicken parm and I dont get my kraut. :P |

Title: Re: I know its finally getting colder when.... Post by Mosaicwench on Oct 10th, 2007, 4:19pm Spare ribs and saurekraut 3+ pounds boneless pork spareribs 2 cans sweet sauerkraut 2 teaspoons paprika 6 beef bouillon cubes 8 cups water 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds 1/2 teaspoon pepper 10 slices of bacon; dipped in flour Rinse and drain sauerkraut. Place kraut in crockpot or nesco. Add 8 cups of water, uncooked spareribs, paprika, bouillon cubes, caraway seeds, and pepper. Cook covered all day until tender. One half hour before serving, fry bacon dipped in flour until crisp. Break bacon into crockpot and cook further until thickened. Serve with spaetzle or gnocchi. I hates sauerkraut when I was a kid - the smell drove me away. I still don't like the smell but now I LOVE the taste. |

Title: Re: I know its finally getting colder when.... Post by Tiannia on Oct 10th, 2007, 4:28pm ok will give this one a try. As a kids we always made kraut and ribs in the oven. But my mom never had a crock pot. 'My husband swears that he hates kraut but when we went to the county fair, he got a huge Brat smothered in Kraut. rofl |
