Title: Are we going to go from summer to winter?
Post by purpleydog on Oct 8th, 2007, 7:42am
The last time I remember it being so hot all summer, and into fall this far was back in 1995. I didn't have to turn on the furnace until November that year, and it looks like it's going to happen again this year. I'd love to be able to open the windows for awhile to enjoy fall weather, but it seems it's going to go straight from A/C to running the furnace.

Is it hot where you are too? Did you set a record yesterday Pegg? I know it was 90 before we even got out of Wisconson, and stayed that way all the way home.

The forecast this week is to finally have highs in the lower 60's, but they've been saying that for weeks now. Guess I'll wait to see if it actually happens.

Sure feels weird to be in the 90's, and upper 80's while the leaves are changing... in central Illinois.

Did you miss it, Chris? All the news outlets have been telling us it's global warming, and that I'm responsible for it.

It got pretty darn hot here yesterday, yes.  Upper 80's.  The humidity was the killer though.

Between hot flashes and the humidity, I was misserable and it swiped all my energy.  I never did get any laundry done.

70 degrees right now.  More like a July morning than October.

A little further north we are above average temp. We are sitting at about 68 degrees here this morning and the leaves are just about at their peak.

Two years ago we had snow falling so we are taking advantage of being off for our Thanksgiving long weekend and going biking so maybe if it does not rain too hard today I will try and get some fall color pics.

I thought cow farts were responsible.  Did I somehow not notice that you were a cow?  :-/ [smiley=laugh.gif]

You must have missed it too, lady.

I drive a car, I have a fireplace, I grill outdoors, I use products that nibble away at the ozone layer, I use paper products (including - brace yourself - toilet paper), and while I'm not a cow, per se, I eat them, therefore they fart on my behalf.

Doesn't anybody watch the news anymore (oh, that's right, nobody DOES actually watch the news anymore. I wonder why?)?

;)

Well Bill, I know you aren't a cow, but I wasn't going to mention farts. Butt, heat rises. ;)

Global warming... now there's a concept. It's been talked about for the last 20 years or so, and I never gave it a thought, but when I look back at the last several years, I can see a warming trend. Will probably eventually lead to another ice age, but hey...  that's evolution for you.

I guess if I watched the news, I'd be better informed, but I don't watch it too often. I don't care for local news, and I don't get to see much national news. I usually catch it second hand via the science channel...

Well, off to look at my electric bill for this month (cringe). My air conditioning bills have been higher than my heating bills this year.

Yeah I took down the AC a few weeks ago.  Wan't a smart moove I guess.

One of the problems I notice when we have extended warm weather into the fall, is that the winters are harsher.

There is enough science to indicate that the Earth has gone through many cycles of climate changes.  Large and small ice ages.  Heck it was the small ice age that caused much of the devistation of the "Dark Ages" in Europe after a very prospurous agricultural era in the same region.  There was the Year without a summer.  Check it out.  It wasn't too many years ago that people were grilling out on Christmas day in Northern Wisconsin, and I know locals here have been aware of the January thaw for generations.

Sure, it's possible that man hasn't helped the situation any, but man did not cause this either, IMHO.  Man also cannot stop it.  Only "slightly" slow it's progress.  Again JMHO.

I need to go see a client.   :)

This is the first time in 5 years that my power bill was not over $500 a month and 8 year before that over $200.  And it is cold here in OR.  I am not quite used to the damp cold. That is taking a bit to get used to. But I love the fact hat I can keep my windows up during the day, as long it is not raining.  :-/

I heard all ya'll people where getting a heat wave.

I love the weather in Oregon, and I can't wait to move there. It's pretty temperate, on the coast, the temps pretty much range from 55 to 65 in the summer, and about 10 degrees less in winter. Not too hot, and not too cold. Perfect for a fireplace. :)

Great pic. Should make a good pic of the week for the guys.

I gotta go back to work.  [smiley=laugh.gif]

(Pegg, I hope yer wrong, but I know you're right).

Hasn't the moonbat crowd in OR banned the use of fireplaces yet?

The sky is falling!

I went to the river when I was in Blythe, I think I saw this woman, though from the back you would think she was nude because the rolls ate her top.........
It was nice in Kansas yesterday.....

Ah, another brilliant idea has come to me !!!

Rubber pants for cows with a hose hooked up to gather up the farts and recycle them into your home furnace.

Good for the environment, stylish attire for the cows and free heating.  [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif]

Brilliant !!! Almost as good as my "yellow color tidybowl"
You dont have to flush as much that way.

All these great ideas, one is bound to hit & make me a million !! [smiley=laugh.gif]

Yeah Chris, it was 90's this last weekend...now it looks like 60's or 70's tomorrow.

I agree, it is good to be able to open the windows and let in fresh fall air into the house.

Not this week.
Cheers, Dave

The most recent forecast is that it's supposed toget down to 40 here tonight, with a high of only 50 something tomorrow.  30 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago.

Screwy indeed.

I know your comments are directed as an opinion of global warming, and you mention man not helping being a possibility.  It does appear that a human influence is noticeable in ways, and conceivable to be happening in ways not as noticeable.

Power Company Will Settle Pollution Suit

By LARA JAKES JORDAN,AP

Posted: 2007-10-09 07:39:46

WASHINGTON (Oct. 9) - Settling an eight-year legal battle, a major power generator has agreed to spend $4.6 billion to reduce chemical emissions blamed for spreading acid rain across the Northeast, The Associated Press has learned.

...

The EPA, a dozen environmental groups and eight states - Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont - brought the lawsuit against AEP in 1999 during the Clinton administration. They accused the energy company of rebuilding coal-fired power plants without installing pollution controls as required under the Clean Air Act.

Environmentalists blame acid rain caused by coal-fired power plants for plaguing the Northeast over the last quarter-century, including damage that has eaten away at the Statue of Liberty and the Adirondacks mountain range in upstate New York. Smog and acid rain have been linked to sulfates and nitrates that are products of coal-fired plants.

These people in OR are a bit fanitical.
Here I figured growing up in Vegas, I could say that I have seem everything and could not be shocked.

I was not prepared for going topless to be legal here.  Took my kids out to a hot spring and well needless to say my 5 yr old who already is a boob man was very happy.  "BOOBIES, mom!!!!!!!!!!!"

Up here in the wilds of western New York, it's the warmest October that I remember in 61 years but we had the coolest July that I can remember too. August was hot, as it should be but September was warmer than normal. We are told in the Buffalo area that we're going to have a 4% less severe winter......whatever that means..... It was in the 70s this morning but....ah...it's cooling off nicely and is beginning to feel like fall. It's been a very dry year here. Odd weather though.

I just heard on the news just the opposite Charlie.  That it's supposed to be colder than last year, and heating fule costs are raising between 10 and 20 percent depending on the type of fule.

We can't seem to get straight answers anywhere anymore.

Perhaps I got it backwards.

Colder is fine with me. Although I have 30 dollar electric bills. I have gas heat and a 47 year old furnace.   brrrr"

I still love winter though. Buffalo is sure having a better October than last year. What a disaster.

It is possible though that in 50 years the straight answers will be all around us.

We can always claim though that we didn't know, that's not what the fossil fuel industry told us and it was not sufficiently and convincingly evident during the seasons of 2000 - 2020 when I looked out the window.

Just a thought, not knocking or coercing opinions,  because things are to each of us as they seem or are knowledgably possessed within each person's strict boundary of belief.

One of the biggest reasons for regret can be not necessarily making a wrong decision but more likely not acting when one felt they should have.  I just hope we do not have that experience, that's all.
