Title: So I was thinking about callin the vet anyway... Post by Ree on Oct 5th, 2007, 7:10pm soooooooo I go down to do some laundry and I come up stairs to find that my dogs new cast he got put on yesterday for another whopping 138.00 was on the floor and he was licking his foot... I didn't have glasses on so I said what is he licking is that a mouse... I look further to see that its his foot... the foot we haven't seen in 5 weeks..... I panicked and called the vet screaming into the phone " I HOPE YOU CHECK YOUR MESSAGES BECAUSE IM NOT CALLING THAT EMERGENCY PLACE SO I CAN PAY ANOTHER 700 OR 800 BUCKS TO HAVE THIS FIXED..." she called me back and though he had to be sedated yesterday... ahem... today she could just whip the thing on him in 5 minutes... so do you think Toby's bills from the vets are a rip or what... yesterday 70$ sedation 50$ xray 15$ bandages MODIFIED TO SAY 50$ A WEEK AGO FOR XRAYS 15 BUCKS FOR BANDAGES 4 WEEKS OF FOOT PAD BANDAGES AT 15$ PER WEEK 5 weeks ago 1000.00 bucks for the splint xrays etc... seems to me they could have wrapped a popsicle stick around it, if it only took her 5 minutes to whip a cast on there without sedation... REES HERE TO SAY WHAZZZZZZZZUP WITH THAT??? |

When my last two dogs were sick, I spent loads of $$ on treatments, meds, office visits, etc. but they were worth every dollar I spent. When I got my two new dogs, I got pet health insurance for them. Might want to give this website a look. http://www.petinsurance.com/ I'm wondering why your dog kept the first cast on with no problems but chewed off the new one? Could the new cast have been too tight and causing him pain? Do you live near any veterinary schools? Sometimes their rates are lower than private veterinarians. I took one of my dogs to The University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School for an ultrasound and was impressed by the great treatment by the staff and the fair pricing for the ultrasound. Hope your little dog feels better soon. |

I rather buy several bags of dog and cat food and donate them to the Humane Society than paying the private vet outrageos fees. When we sterilized our female dog the private vet charged us $300, our second dog and cat were sterilized at the Humane Society: $35 each and 4 bags of Kitty and Puppy food...do the math. |

I knew $1000 for a splint when he first broke his leg was bad... Some of us in the vet industry don't do un necessary procedures for money :) But some are... Isn't his leg healed up yet? Since then we have been to the vet 4 times each time 180.00 . Now the dog's blood is coming back with unusual numbers for his liver enzymes. S000000000 It needs to be taken yet a third time. and that alone is 80.00 I got on the phone with the vet and told him that the puppy eats acorns whenever we walk him. I mean he chews them so fast that you can't stop him. The vet thinks that is the answer---but of course he is going to lay the guilt trip on me that I really should bring him into the office for another blood test. I love him so I'll do it. |

I get most everything else from the feed store. Their despempter (8-in one that the vet charges 80 bucks for -- $8 at the feed store) - I can give the shots. Wormers -- I can give them -- cheap at the feed store. Infections -- penicillin -- cheap at the feed store (works on humans real well also - we don't go to the doctor much either and the B12 is great from the feed store also -- kept Bill's hemoglobin up so he didn't have to take those $1000 shots - doc never did figure that one out). Also that cow wormer stuff (can't remember the name of it - senior moment right now) works good to get rid of heart worms ($22 vs $300) - just have to judge their weight to give it - but it works. The Pet insurance is good. I had it on Rudy for a long time and always came out on it when he was younger. Had his teeth cleaned every year and all that. But finally dropped it when we started getting more dogs. Figured out I was spending more on the vet bills than I was on my doc bills. I didn't know the Humane Society would neuter your animals unless you adopted them there. Think I'll do that with my cats. That's good to know. Also - old remedy -- about once a month, sprinkle tobacco on their food - it'll keep them wormed. (I don't know about heart worms with this one, but that's what we did with our animals when I was a kid and we never had to BUY wormer meds - and we didn't know about heart worms back then.) I have never paid $300.00 for a spay/neuter. For my cats, it was $65.00 each plus the over-night stay at $15.00 per night. Barbara, What you're talking about with the cattle wormer is Ivomec and it's a preventative not for treatment. Shucks, my two neutered male cats get two shots a year (only because they go in and out) and it's not that expensive. My inside cats don't get any shots, simply for the fact that they never go outside, so aren't exposed to anything. |

The dam dogs see the vet more than we (my family) do the doc. ::) If our vet charged that much, I would let the dog piss freely all over his office. [smiley=laugh.gif] Rolo. |

Believe it or not our vet is cheaper and allows the techs to give shots so we pay like 20 bucks for shot visits. The bandage changes were also 15 bucks a piece but 5 weeks of them is paying for a couple of suppers anyway... Dave and I just decided we are taking the cast off in a week and a half he doesnt have to go to the vet for that... and we are done... Toby has used up his vet allowance for his life time... thanks all love me |
