Title: important med advice Post by Maffumatt on Sep 27th, 2007, 9:03pm If you are allergic to Codeine does that mean you are also allergic to morphine? Is Codeine a derivative of morphine? |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by Redd on Sep 27th, 2007, 9:13pm From my understanding, there are subtle differences in the molecular structure of each of the opiate dirivatives that may make oe of them take issue but not another. I'd suggest, as was told to me about my shrimp alery, taht if I wated to attempt fresh water shrimp, to do it at the hospital in case there is still a reaction. Only venture on the safe side. My personal philosophy. |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by Grandma_Sweet_Boy on Sep 27th, 2007, 9:14pm In my daughter's case - YES!!!!! They gave her morphine (after gall bladder surgery) which compromised her breathing. A few months ago she had wisdom teeth taken out and was given Tylenol III and had the same reaction. The doctor told her that not everyone that is allergic to morphine is also allergic to codeine. She's also allergic to DHE. Good thing she's not a CH'er. Don't know if this helps Matt - just the one I do know about. Carol |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by E-Double on Sep 27th, 2007, 9:15pm it is a derivative but i do not know how that works with regards to allergies http://ctd.mdibl.org/detail.go;jsessionid=985101BA7DB6185092E6C9E49090C9F9?type=chem&acc=D009022 |

Only to the point that when it comes to allergies, if you don't have a rescue method for it, don't risk anything unless under a doctors supervision. |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by Maffumatt on Sep 27th, 2007, 9:22pm I am at my moms and I had given my dad his first dosage of morphine and had remembered that on his medical records that he was allergic to Codine and hydrocodone. I called the hospital here and they just told me to watch his breathing and pallor, if he had any changes to take him in asap. Thanks |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by Redd on Sep 27th, 2007, 9:25pm Watch for a reaction, ask him what type of alllergy he has. What happens with codine. If you see anything that worries you call the ambulace. |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by assaultme on Sep 27th, 2007, 9:27pm Redd is right. Take it from a guy who had morphine running thru his body instead of blood [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif] It should be the same whether it's codiene or Percocet or Morphine, but for some reason...people react differently. I think the fact that the different opiate-based drugs (vicodin, percocet, etc) have different analgesics in the pill, it causes different reactions for people. Some have ibuprofin, tylenol or maybe NSAIDS. That in itself could be a contributing factor. Also consider this...you can have NO reactions to, for instance, percocet...then all of a sudden your feet and hands balloon up and hurt (allergic reaction for sure) Docs who have a patient on prescribed opiates who has an allergic reaction will almost always just change the script. Like from Vicodin to darvocet. It generally solves the problem. So, no it is not a for sure thing that if you are allergic to vicodin, you will automatically be allergic to morphine. But of course it is best to consult with a Physician...they are supposed to be the experts. Cheers, Dave |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by Redd on Sep 27th, 2007, 9:27pm If it is in his medical records (ad the prescribig Doc. is reputable) I wouldn't worry too much. As I mentioned the molecular structures are similar, but may be different enough to not cause a reaction. |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by Maffumatt on Sep 27th, 2007, 9:30pm the prescribing doc was from the VA, I have little confidence in them. |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by Redd on Sep 27th, 2007, 9:34pm Keep am eye on him, but remember as assultme said too, a switch from oe dirivative ca mean the differece between a reaction and no reaction. my "n" key is funky, so please excuse my typing. |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by Karla on Sep 27th, 2007, 9:39pm My son is allergic to codene. He had severe stomach pains and rash on body. No problem breathing. Doctor told me to watch him closely if he ever takes any more opiates because a reaction is likely but not nessasary. |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by Lizzie2 on Sep 27th, 2007, 10:23pm It would be important to know what happens when he takes codeine. What sort of allergy is it? |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by Mosaicwench on Sep 27th, 2007, 10:55pm The reaction type is VERY important - be it localized reaction or systemic reaction. The systemic reaction can kill (that's the throat closing and the labored breathing). That's a 911 call. A localized reaction is quite different, generally not fatal unless localized in the throat, and easier to see and manage (although they can be dramatic, too). A localized reaction can be as small as the head of a pin or as big as a limb or whole body. Think large rash from antibiotics or a small lump from a bee sting - same localized reaction, just different sizes. Best of luck. Remember that morphine in older folks can cause restlessness and walking and talking in odd ways . . .the care for my deceased father is still fresh in my mind. |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by Maffumatt on Sep 28th, 2007, 12:04am Codeine would make him very sick to his stomach, throwing up, dry heaves, cramps ect,,,,, He tolerated his first dosage very well, though I did spill a little while putting it in his peg tube. so I don't think he got the full ML. He did fall asleep around an hour later and has been sleeping soundly ever since, for that I am grateful. Here lately he can't get comfortable in any position long enough to get any meaningful sleep. He didn't get nausea from it like he was getting from the other pain med. Thanks for the advice, it came in handy. |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by sldrswyfe on Sep 28th, 2007, 6:38am Matt, Interesting...something like that actually happened to me recently. Codeine isn't something that agrees with me...it makes me itch really badly...I get hives from it...between my fingers, my feet...my torso..it's awful. Plus nausea. I had a bad reaction to IV morphine a few monthes ago. I was given 4mg through the IV, and suddenly felt like an elephant was standing on my chest. It was pretty terrifying. It also made me restless for hours... I had never had morphine before...but am ok with Percocet, so I figured I'd be ok with morphine...but it's not so. It was a horrid enough of an experience to have me tell my dr. about it....and it's now on "allergic to" list. Hope that helps some. Sherri |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by BarbaraD on Sep 28th, 2007, 6:48am Matt, I'm alergic to codine, but on occasion I've had demerol and I think morphine with no reactions to them. Hope that helps. I had about the same reaction to codine that Pop did. Give him a hug for me. Love to all of you. Hugs BD |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by deltadarlin on Sep 28th, 2007, 9:24am Matt, I'm allergic to codeine and ALL of it's derivatives, including synthetic and I have the same reaction that your dad does. However, like Barb, I can take Demerol with no problems. Don't know about morphine, haven't needed that one yet. Carolyn |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by BMoneeTheMoneeMan on Sep 28th, 2007, 12:10pm Ugh. I'm just an accountant, I dont know about drugs. I would say :Just be careful. Codeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, morpheine........all those drugs are from opium. If certain opiates are bad, it's likely the others will be also. Maybe since you think you gave him less than a full dose and it worked well, give him less than a full dose next time. If it worked, i would do the same thing again. You family is in my family's thoughts, Bro. B$ |

Title: Re: important med advice Post by Hikerguy on Sep 28th, 2007, 1:46pm All the opiate analogs react differently.Being an EMT we have to ask exactly what happens when someone takes one they may say they are allergic when actually all they get is upset stomach as opposed to compromised airway,Hives, wheezes I once had a woman who was allergic to shellfish so she thought she could premedicate with benadryl and go to a clambake with no such luck...ended up being intubated.... |

That seems to be a general thinking no matter where you live. My sister cannot take most or all narcotics because they make her go a little crazy. Not sure if it is related to Codene or not. |
