Title: Pain and Elevated BP Post by livefromnyc on Sep 21st, 2007, 7:44pm Hello To All, I have recently been diagnosed with cluster headache variant. As you all sadly know, the challenge of this condition has altered my world. While I do want to share my story, I need to first gather my thoughts (as I just returned from a visit with my neurologist). However, in an effort to gauge the general competence and compassion of my new neurologist, I was wondering whether someone could share thoughts regarding the following: The DR did not check my blood pressure. Given that I reported to him that my BP (as taken recently by my PCP) had been elevated (as high as 180/120), I am wondering if I’m being seen by the right person. In general, do neurologist typically take BP readings as part of an examination? (Note my PCP who is treating the BP believes that the elevated readings are resultant of my dealing with the extreme pain. Thanks for your thoughts! |

High BP can be caused by lots of reasons and yes stress is one of them. If you have CH and you don't have the right treatment, that is enough reason to raise your BP. You have to be your best advocate. You have to tell some Doctors what has to be done to you, in this case, to check your vitals. Some medicines affect BP and they need to know if your are Hypertense or not before giving them to you. Talk to your Doctor and let him know your worries. Of course. Every single time as a matter of fact. As do....GP's and others. I had a dermatologist check my BP. 180 systolic and 120 diastolic is very high. Can PAIN raise your BP.. yes. So can whatever meds you are taking like Imitrex, etc. Do not let this "alter your world" as you have said. Get the correct diagnosis, the correct Dr. and the correct treatment and then go out and live your life. Linda |

Title: Re: Pain and Elevated BP Post by Karla on Sep 21st, 2007, 9:00pm My neuro never takes my blood pressure. That is up to my pcp. My blood pressure has been really high for years. My dr said it was due to me being under a lot of pain. I explained that every time I come in it is always high and I am always under extreame pain (lower back issues). I said after awhile doesn't something need to be done? So he sent me home with a automatic blood pressure kit so I could take my reading every couple of hours for a month. Well low and behold I was put on blood pressure meds and now it is fine. I feel much better also. |

Maybe because they piss me off so bad ;) The "2nd best rated neuro in the ATL" is who I seen the last time for my CH and I do not recall him checking my BP - he just came in for about 5 min with his God like attitude and gave me a list of meds to take >:( but he did give me 02 so I am not going to bitch to much ;;D I am on Toprol 50mg a day for my HBP & for SVT but it does not do much for my BP only helps with my SVT... Maybe you can get Verapimil - then you could kill two birds with one stone (or should I say BEAST!) Good Luck! Chris |
