This is the house I grew up in....

In the "diving pool" picture, you can see the gazebo my dad built completely by hand.

The "large upper deck" was outside my room - I had the only door.

Wow! You're dad must have been well off as you were growing up. Half a million dollars is a lot of money plus property taxes of $10,000 a year. Beautiful home though I must say.

They bought it in 1975 for $70,000. Sold it in 1991 for $215,000.  Upper middle class, but not rich....

It only had 5 bedrooms then - hmmmm.....

WOW ! What a beautiful house, Lizz!

This wakes me up to the fact that Sydney is such an expensive city though, a house like that here will not sell for anything less than $5 millions.

Ours is only a small 4 bedroom, 1 bathroom , 1 onsuite with a tiny backyards and its about $520 000  :P

wow nice house,

prices there are a LOT different to here
our flat is 2 bedroom no garden tiny kitchen and tiny bathroom and its worth £200,000 = 402,320.00 US dollars

so in my eyes that house is really cheap !

hell i should move to the usa !

Very nice, I'd buy it but I think i'd hire a good landscaper to keep it nice, looks like a high maint landscape, 1 month of not paying attention and you have a jungle, at least in Florida.  That must have been cool to grow up in, I grew up in cookie-cutter ranch.

that house in my area would go easily go for 900 to 1.2 mil.

Damn, thats almost 2%!!!  My taxes are about .75% of asking price if i sold mine today.  Thats almost 3X more, are the streets lined in gold or something?

Wow, great house Lizzie.  

I grew up in a grand Victorian in Lawrence MA.  Went back by to check on it a few years ago.  Let's just say the neighborhood has gone down quite a bit since I was last there.  The place had been chopped up about 10 appartments.  Kids hanging out of broken windows.  The front door was hanging off it hinges.  It broke my heart to see the place that holds all my childhood memories in such bad shape.  

I'm happy to see your first home has fared much better.  Even if you can't afford to buy it.

My wife and I bought her parents place when they became to old to care for it.  So at least one of us gets to live where they grew up and know the place is well cared for.

Around here taxes are cheap I guess. A house like that would be in the area of 200K. Taxes of maybe 2-3K a year.

 A regular 3 bdrm house w/garage in really good shape costs about 70-90K w/ taxes of about 1800 to 2K a year.

My Bro lives in California. He told me that the house I paid 35K for would go for well over 250K. I paid 17K for a house & a block of commercial property 18 years ago. The taxes were $400 a year.

 However, I suspect the wages are much higher in most other places which might offset the difference.

Last time I checked, the average American home costs somewhere around 100K.

The one I have now is about 1500 sq. ft. Central air & heat, argon filled windows, fenced in yard, heated/finished  2-1/2 car garage w/walk up storage, good neighborhood on the end of a dead end street, got all the appliances, garden shed full of tools & even furniture for 35K. Taxes are $600 per year.
 It's an older house and could use siding and a new kitchen floor, but it's home to me.

 I would guess that most places elsewhere have higher wages in comparison.

But that sure is an awesome house.....looks like a mansion. Love the round roof thing. Looks like a castle sort of.

 Golly it makes the house I'm in  the never-ending  process of buying look like a play house.The difference
in taxes and the purchace price of my house makes up for it being tiny and way less fancy.I am still exited though because this home will be ours (just the girls and mine).We will have such great memories there,though wherever we live we make great memories).heres a link to hopefully my future home.It's in a great neighborhood and the gfirls and I already know many families in the neighbor hood including Beths best friend.heres the link please be kind on opinions its small but very sound and cute in person.

I love the porch!! and the kitchen is very charming!! looks like with your touch it will turn into a very cozy place for sure  :).
My grandmoher used to live in a house like that in front of the beach. In Mexico we call homes like that "chalets".
To see it brought so many memories  :'(....she had a "hamaca" in the porch and we would sit and rock in there for hours...

You and your girls will have a lovely home  :).
