Title: Re: Metal Heads Only !! Post by assaultme on Sep 11th, 2007, 8:15pm The pedals on the 16th note double bass fill looked like Iron Cobra Tamas like mine, but it went too fast to be sure. Yeah, I liked it. Ever hear of Cradle of Filth? Type O was good too Jonny. I liked the short fill finished off with a flam (both sticks hit, but slightly apart in time) on the snare. It sounds really clean that way. Dave |

Title: Re: Metal Heads Only !! Post by assaultme on Sep 11th, 2007, 9:42pm Oh man !!! I've seen Portnoy several times on film & CD. Dream Theatre is awesome. Mike does stuff that is...well...outrageous !!! He has this kit he calls something like the monster or whatever. It is like 3 or 4 drum kits all kinda lined up. He moves around playing everything. Will blow you away!! What Mike does takes many, many years of solid dedication. Sure there are prodigy's, out there. But it takes years of practice. to get where he is at. Portnoy has something that many so called "fast" drummers do not posses. That is technical accuracy. See, even a schmuck like me can learn a 16th note double bass groove and play a paradiddle (r, l , rr-- l, r, ll) over the top of it. Looks kool, but really isn't anything but fluff. But having the technique and even some of his own original stuff is what separates people like him from the rest. Check out the thing he does on the bells. Much like Neil Peart of Rush. Plays a fast and accurate double bass groove and plays a pattern on top of it on the bells. Kinda Chinese sounding eh? read: Train to Bangkok Neil Peart does a solo called "Darkness & Light" saw it live in 78, 79 & 80. Does the bell thing in a similar way. It's 6 minutes of excellence !!! Yeah, he's right up there !!!! Cheers, Dave |

Title: Re: Metal Heads Only !! Post by assaultme on Sep 11th, 2007, 10:12pm Exactly Jonny. Look at the way he approaches a simple 8th note groove. Instead of playing straight 8ths on the ride cymbal, he changes it up and leaves notes out in alternating measures. "rests" as they are called give a subtle texture to the groove. I try to work on these myself as much as possible. A simple example of swung ostenatos (ones with rests ) is "Smoke from a distant fire" by Sanford Townsend band. It gives such texture and a "jazz" feel to the melody of the tune. Another interesting groove is the shuffle. John Bonham of Zeppelin is (was) a master of it. "Fool in the Rain" has a kickass shuffle. If that tune was played straight notes, it would be boring....just another reason Bonham was a drum God !!!! Not to mention the fact that he made up grooves that no one ever thought of. Cheers, Dave |

Title: Re: Metal Heads Only !! Post by ski2k on Sep 12th, 2007, 4:46am Nice pick. I like it, UN.... Kinda reminds me of Vermillion (Slipknot). Type O has been a fav of mine for a long time too, Jonny. Here's (one of) my fav's from them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ntvORezIQ4&mode=related&search= Kickass drummer too... Him I'm not familiar with. The second one you (Jonny) posted of him sounded a LOT like Dream Theatre (to me). Guess I'm lucky to have a good radio station around here. They'll play everything from Led Zep to Pantera, and then some... Keep 'em comin. I'm always lookin' for shit I ain't heard yet... Adam |
