Title: Boycott Snipits haircuts for kids! Post by Ree on Sep 8th, 2007, 2:00pm ok... In 1996 I worked as a stylist in a salon called "Snipits" its a salon for kids that is rapidly growing accross the country. At the time that I worked there there was one salon in Framingham Mass. The owner of the salon, (also the grand daughter of Jack Benny and very wealthy) heard that I could write and solicited my writing ability... I wrote a story for the animated tv's that the kids play with while getting their hair cut, its actually about my kids...32 pages very cute and I wrote it in my own time... NOT a book for hire which means I would write on work time. It was a verbal agreement (1st mistake). Well~~~ she stole it from me. She flew a wonderful artist in from Florida and paid him to illustrate my story.He made it into a CD/DVD story book. He actually made all the characters for the salon too when she first opened. He also illustrates for disney and Im sure he didnt come cheap...When It came time for us to talk money after all I expected to be paid for my story, she hit me with a 6 page legal agreement, and told me she wasn't paying me, because I wasnt a professional. I took so much time to write the story and in my own time that I let her have it to only use in the tv's at the salon but to not make characters from my book etc.Then she made it difficult for me to work there and I ended up resigning Well this was 11 years ago and ... at one time I was going to persue a law suit against her and then I got spinal meningitis and saw it as a sign from God to forget it. I couldn't even drive by that place for the longest time without crying. I loved my job there, because I love kids. Writing that story was the icing on the cake for me. I also wrote a list of rules that is in a poem on the wall of Snipits too...she sweet talked me into that while my story was being illustrated. Long story short... Well now there are Snipits all over the country she has franchised it out completely... This effected me emotionally that this woman as rich as she was could walk all over someone small like me that was just looking for a break. To see my work published in the salon was so exciting even though she would not pay me for it. The woman is Satan in a running suit. She also has a blog about how nice she is but I have to say in the year that I worked for her she was not nice to her employees at all... I don't know what to do with this pent up anger except spread the word. It is not jealousy that inspires me its the fact that this woman stole from me and I want the world to know it. Lesson learned... dont do anything without a written agreement. I would love any comments... I think my statute of limitations is over, so I cannot persue anything now... but would if I could so who knows about this kind of law. Here is the link to her business... Ever hear about Billy Joel's first album, just to let you know you are in good company... ' Joel signed his first solo record contract with Artie Ripp of Family Productions, and subsequently recorded his first solo album. Cold Spring Harbor (a reference to the Long Island town of the same name), was released in 1971. However, the album was mastered at the wrong speed, and the album was initially released with this error, resulting in Joel sounding a semitone too high. The onerous terms of the Family Productions contract also guaranteed him very little money from the sales of his albums. In order to get out of the deal with Family Productions, Joel moved to Los Angeles, California with Elizabeth Weber, and they married in Los Angeles on September 5, 1971. For six months the following year, he played in the Executive Lounge piano bar under the name Bill Martin. This experience is what gave him the material for "Piano Man." ' Artists get ripped off alot. Have you actually talked to a lawyer? So have you written anything more? sounds like you have real talent. Hope you use it, enjoy and find pleasure from it, and don't let jerk-off people from your past discourage or create negativity in doing what you are good at and love. |

But dont be despair because although she could take away your right to that one story she can never take away from you your writing talent. You can write a thousand more pieces, each one more beautiful, more exciting than the last. You can look for others to publish them. Soon you will see your own books being enjoyed by children all over the world :) Instead of crying from hurt every time you drive past the joint, it would be better to channel that feelings into writing. The sweetest revenge wouldnt be boycotting the joints, but to become the bestest writer there is and showed that to her face! I would be the first to buy your books Ree :-* Best of luck Annette |

Title: Re: Boycott Snipits haircuts for kids! Post by Callico on Sep 8th, 2007, 10:27pm If you didn't copywrite your work you can't do a thing about it after the fact. When you next write something, and i hope you will, take a copy of the work to the post office and send it registered mail to yourself, and then file for copywrite protection. The purpose of sending it to yourself registered mail is the date and time stamps on the envelopes if it ever gets challenged. It shows when the work was originated. Unfortunately, you are not the first, nor will you be the last to be taken advantage of in this way. Jerry |
