Title: Of doves and dumbasses Post by nani on Sep 5th, 2007, 11:51pm I live out in the country. The first few years here, I'd be surprised to hear distant gunshots starting on Sept 1st every year. Then I learned that Sept 1st is the first day of dove season. Every year, it seems the gunshots are getting closer. Last year, I saw some dumbass walking down my road, pointing his gun at the doves lined up on the powerlines. Today, I swear shots were coming from the ditch across the street from my house. >:( It is a residential area. I'm starting to worry about putting my dogs out, for fear of falling bullets... My question... how close do the hunters have to be before I'm allowed to shoot back? |

;;D Posting your own property it a good idea. Then if there are any restrictions to dove hunting, know them and report violations. It's not taken lightly. I don't know but sounds concerning and disregardingly dangerous. |

You mean like a sign? My property is fenced all around, and my dogs would keep any would be trespassers off (if I let them out). Can I post a sign that says: I'll shoot yer sorry ass if ya get too close with yer gun? The restriction is that they have to be far away from homes. All over this county there are shot up signs that say NO HUNTING. |

Bill made this point much more direct than being touched on. Errant hunters confronted by the law will be a stiffly memorable and changing habit for them. It's been a very long time for me, but seem to recall infractions result in immmediate confiscation of gun(s) too. A thought enough to not screw around, perhaps intended that way. Been a long time to recall, could have been just Michigan at the time. |

Title: Re: Of doves and dumbasses Post by George_J on Sep 6th, 2007, 2:42am Yay-hoos. World's infested with them. Sorry you've got 'em. on 09/05/07 at 23:51:48, nani wrote:
Shotgun pellets don't really go high enough to have a lot of inertia coming back down. In short, falling pellets shouldn't be too big a hazard. Then again, I'd still be worried about a dog getting blasted accidentally by some doofus firing in the direction of the house. on 09/05/07 at 23:51:48, nani wrote:
As a practical matter, if you wait until they're closer to the outbuildings, it will reduce the distance you'll have to drag the bodies in order to hide them. Best, George |

Title: Re: Of doves and dumbasses Post by deltadarlin on Sep 6th, 2007, 7:51am I had that problem years ago when we first moved out here, except it wasn't dove hunters, it was deer hunters (and that makes it much more dangerous). I was afraid to let Sarah play in the yard, because I didn't know if they were going to shoot toward the house or not. It was during dog season and I knew most of them were not hunting legally. I got tired of it one day. Grabbed my rifle, the binoculars and a legal pad. Walked out on my front porch, laid my rifle across the railing, picked up my binoculars and proceeded to get tags off vehicles. They left shortly thereafter and never returned. ;;D |

Title: Re: Of doves and dumbasses Post by Brewcrew on Sep 6th, 2007, 7:59am Nani - In our neck of the woods, the minimum distance is 500 yards from a residential area when hunting for small game with a shotgun. I know upstate it's further when hunting for deer and larger game with a high-powered rifle, but I don't know what that distance is. Shooting at birds sitting on a power line with any kind of gun? What a bunch of stupid heads. Second rule of hunter safety: know your target and what lies beyond (first being: treat any gun as though it is loaded and the safety is off). |

Title: Re: Of doves and dumbasses Post by Paul98 on Sep 6th, 2007, 8:30am nani- Most, if not all states have restrictions on where you can hunt. Roadside hunting and within a certian distance of dwellings is forbiden. Call the state police and state that you have hunters within "X" feet of your house and the road discharging firearms and you have children. I would bet the police put a stop to it right quick. -P. |

Title: Re: Of doves and dumbasses Post by sandie99 on Sep 6th, 2007, 9:20am Mike, I like that one. ;;D Back in here you can't even pick BERRIES 400 meters from someone's house. We have a summer cottage neighbour who doesn't know her limits, so we have been thinking about making our point with a string or a sign. If I recall right, it's duck season in here and I know that some chaps do hunt them near our summer cottage. Luckily for us, these hunters know their limits and most of them were my dad's dear friends from childhood and his moose hunting days. :) Nani, that situation sounds scary. I hope solution is found soon. Sanna |

Here, the police are on the side of our road WITH the hunters, all of 'em drinking their early morning coffee out of little brown bags. Most of the land on the road I live on is posted- with hunt club signs. And it really sux when the hunting dogs find our house with not one, but 2 female dogs living here. Then we can't get rid of the male hunting dogs! Oh, and we have to put blaze orange kerchiefs on our dogs so that the dumbasses in the woods see that they're DOGS, not deer or the target du jour. |

Is that the State Police or the generic county cop? If the State Police are called and alerted that firearms are being discharged near a dwelling with children nearby I doubt they would sit back and do nothing. County cops; I can see that happening. During hunting season I keep out of the deep woods with my dog. Just common sense. -P. |

a mispelt word or were you meaning that? either way I'm LMAO at you. I've been to Nani's house. Her street is a normal size street with houses crammed 5 or 10 ft. apart like everywhere else in a city. Her neighbors across the street are very close too. It is the ;last place I would think someone should be out there with a gun of any kind. |
