Title: internet question  not CH
Post by Callico on Sep 3rd, 2007, 4:24pm
While perusing the board today I had a window pop up on the screen that looked like a Microsoft message wanting me to install "drivecleaner" for free saying that the adult sites I have clicked on (I didn't) have left a trail and tracking software.  I tryed to decline, but it started a "scan" and I couldn't get it off by clicking no or cancel.  I ended up having to do ctrl alt delete to get it off of the screen.

Can anyone tell me anything about this?  I have to display my ignorence, cause I can't hide it for very long! ;;D

thanks for any input.

Jerry

Same thing just happened to me after I clicked on Helen's link....not sure what was going on. I was able to back out of everything, though.

Sorry about that James - I think its adverts that are on sites you visit, I've had those checkers start up on me in the past. I usually click on the red x in the top right hand corner rather than "cancel" or anything and that shuts it for me - it pisses me off greatly though!

edited to add that I've changed the link to a youtube one of the same thing now - hope it helps!

I got it when I clicked on Helen's link too.  Probably an imbedded advert on that page.  I couldn't get out of it by using the x.  Whoever it was did a good job of mimicing Microsoft,

No worries H. I'm just glad they were trying to sell me 'Drivecleaner' instead of 'Headcleaner'. I bought that vcr tape, and, boy, was that misleading :)

Check your puter for spy ware.  Most puters are loaded with them.  Most are harmless but some will upload your browsing sites and some of the nastier ones will pull personal info from your puter.

Alt + F4 will close the current window in any program running Katherine (MS Windows), including any window in a browser running the Mozilla 4.0 browser engine like Internet Explorer 5.0 and newer.
That also works for those of you running KDE, Gnome, Electric Eyes, Ice, Next Step, CDE, and IFCE Windows etc.. Oh, and I think Mac Windows also. But I'm not sure about that one. But it does work with KDE Windows on a BSD Operating System. So it should work that way on a Mac. Since its Operating System is BSD.
Please remember if you are using a Micorsoft Operating System, it was never intended to be attached to a network. Let alone something like the Internet. You come here at your peril. Thats why you have to buy all that third party software to help protect you. Like Anti Virus software etc.
Remember that some of us out here aren't very nice. We didn't build this for you. We don't maintain it for you. We didn't really expect you to be here. Just remember the rules we set down when we started this. There aren't any. Just Protocols, and those aren't carved in stone.
And for those who wish to know Windows was invented in the London ATT/Bell Labs in 1972, and released into the wild. Its free for the asking. You can roll your own if you want. Microsoft has never had anything to do with it. They just have good advertising. Their version is called Katherine. Some kids at MIT made it. you can still get it for free from them. The same way Microsoft did. Oh and you can sell it if you want also. None of us care. I wouldn't buy it. After all its free.
Oh well. Much ado about nothing. Sorry. Please be careful out here......suckers.

Kirk,

I hope you realize that Microsoft has the words "windows", "word", "office", and "money as registered trademarks. This means we own those words in the realm of computing and by all rights we invented each of those things.

Read about the great things Microsoft has done (http://www.thocp.net/companies/microsoft/microsoft_company.htm) Especially that we invented the first programming language for the personal computer. By the way Xerox PARC never existed.

As soon as you realize the Microsoft way is the only way, you will give up on that nasty open source software and step in line with the rest of my drones.

Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated!

Since there are no fences inside a computer. Why do we need Gates?
