Title: Loss of a Great Physician... :( Post by Lizzie2 on Aug 29th, 2007, 10:32pm I learned this morning that one of our greatest pediatric surgeons was killed this morning while out for his morning jog. Just before 5am, he was hit by a box truck in an intersection in NJ. He was 57 years old. He will be missed so much - by his friends and family, by those of us who worked with him, by the families who have children alive because of him, and especially by the families who would have benefitted from his skill and compassion, were he still alive. This is a heartbreaking day for our community.... :'( If I could ask for some prayers and vibes for our pediatric surgeon, his family, and our entire pediatric/neonatal community, that would be greatly appreciated. My heart is breaking over this news. He was so great - always so kind, funny, compassionate. He'd been at our hospital for years - probably since before I was even born! He did a lot of really wonderful things... I just saw him last week as he came to check on a baby I was caring for. Apparently what must have been his last surgery took place on our unit last night. Nobody can believe that this has happened... Just really shows you that you never know when your number might be up. Life is short... Sometimes it is hard to make the most of it, but we still have to try... I shall certainly miss him... :'( Hugz, Carrie |

Title: Re: Loss of a Great Physician... :( Post by cynjeep89 on Aug 30th, 2007, 9:28pm Noted surgeon killed while jogging By JIM WALSH, The (Cherry Hill, N.J.) Courier-Post Updated Thursday, August 30, 2007 at 12:51 pm Dr. Philip Wolfson The (Cherry Hill, N.J.) Courier-Post CHERRY HILL, N.J. — A prominent surgeon in Delaware and medical professor died after he was hit by a truck during a pre-dawn jog. Dr. Philip Wolfson, 57, of Haddonfield was fatally struck shortly before 5 a.m. Wednesday on Brace Road, south of N.J. 70, police said. He regularly ran in the early morning before beginning his dual roles at institutions in Delaware, South Jersey and Pennsylvania , associates said. Wolfson, a Hawthorne Avenue resident, was a pediatric surgeon with offices at the Virtua/duPont Children's Health Program in Voorhees. However, he worked primarily at the A.I. duPont Hospital for Children in Rockland and the Jefferson duPont Children's Health Program in Philadelphia. Wolfson also was a professor of surgery at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. "People were openly weeping in the hallways today," said Dr. Jay Greenspan, who heads the pediatrics departments at the Philadelphia and Wilmington hospitals. "He was a really special person," said Greenspan. "He cared deeply about his patients. He also cared deeply about educating the next generation of health-care workers." Wolfson was the current president of the Association of Surgical Educators, a group with members from 180 medical schools in this country and Canada. He also was chairman of the curriculum committee at Jefferson Medical School, which he joined in 1982. Five years ago, he received a portrait from Jefferson Medical School's Class of 2002. "That is one of the highest honors bestowed by the students," said Jeffrey Baxt, a school spokesman. And he was selected last year as one of nation's top doctors, according to a survey of medical professionals by Best Doctors Inc., a company that serves employers, insurers and health plans. Only 3 percent of board-certified doctors in the country made the list, according to the Boston-based firm. "He worked very hard," said Greenspan. "He jogged every morning and he'd get in to Jefferson at probably 5:30 a.m." Wolfson died a short time after the accident at Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Cherry Hill. The driver of the box truck was not injured. Police did not release his identity. Funeral arrangements for Wolfson were incomplete, according to Platt Memorial Chapels of Cherry Hill. The accident remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the accident or has information on it is asked to call Cherry Hill Police Traffic Unit at (856) 488-7820. Contact Jim Walsh at (856 |
