Title: Midwestern Rains and flooding . . . .
Post by Mosaicwench on Aug 19th, 2007, 1:59pm
Just checking in on our Midwestern clusterheads to make sure you're all okay.

We've got a massive stationary front dumping LOTS of rain over us with no end in sight.  I see they've evacuated some areas of Southern Minnesota due to flooding and the Chicago area looks like it's getting spanked.  We've been lucky here NW of Milwaukee - only about 3+ inches of rain thus far . . . . but it doesn't ever stop!

Please check in (from your ark, if necessary) and let us know you're okay.

(And I know full well that this isn't like the Hurricane bearing down on the southern end of the country, but it's big news up here.)

No risks up here Pat, least not yet, but it's a damp chilly sort of day, and so chili is on the menu for tonight.  ;;D

Thanks Redd!

It's home-made Mexican tonight for us; ensalada de dos frijoles (two bean salad) with goat cheese tacos, guacamole, pico de gallo, and lemon poppyseed cake for dessert.  (The cake is not Mexican, it just sounded good).

You're right - ugly damp day calls for fire in the food!

Yep, need to find warmth in the food today.  Looks like it's quit drizzling for the time being...but I'm still chilled to the bone.

This weekend is Sun Prairie WI Corn Festival.  It has arts and crafts, bingo, carnaval rides and games and serves several tons of steamed sweatcorn on the cob.  You then peel it and butter it and eat it.  I went yesterday in the downpouring rain and ate 3 ears of corn and played bingo for 2 hours so I stayed dry.  I think they lost lots of money this year.  It is really sad.
Talk about a muddy mess. Yuk.

I am ok in Madison.

We got some rain yesterday here in central IL, but it is just hot, humid and nasty today...  And I'm think about grilling some pork chops tonight, just so I don't have to heat up the house any.  Anything else can be done in the microwave.

Karla - JrBrew and his buddies ran the sound system at a local Lion's Club festival for 12 hours yesterday.  During the headline act there were 10 people in the tent.

This particular fest is usually well attended by Harley riders.  With all the rain there were NONE.  The Lion's budget for next year is toast.

Then this weekend is also Irish Fest at the Summerfest grounds and Ala Carte at the Zoo . . .both washed out.

And 5 minutes after I replied, it started thundering and a huge storm is rolling in!

Well, it's coming down like cats and dogs here again.  Still no flood watches that I'm aware of, but I'm ready for it to end.

I wish you all would send some rain my way.  Ground is dry 2 feet down and I'm worried the wells will run dry.  My pond is lower than it has been in 20 years.

We are under a flash flood watch yesterday and today.  I just read on cnn that Gays Mills WI flooded.  I called my parents who live there and they said the river was at record levels and was over the river banks.  They had to evacuate people that lived in the flood plain downtown.  My parents live 1 mile out of town and are not in the flood plain but they are trapped because the two roads that run out of town are flooded.  They have shut off the electiricty and the gas.  She said they grilled out and ate hambergers.  They turned on the electiric tonight.  They are suppose to get rain for next two days.  My Grandmother got evacuated from the nursing home in Soldiers Grove WI and moved to Boscobel wi nursing home due to a mud slide.  I hope it gets better soon.   Real soon.

Bump back up for round two . . or is it three? four?

This is crazy!

We got spanked hard this afternoon (70 mph wind gusts - limbs all over the yard) and poor Brew had an OUTDOOR gig in a tent!!

Both he and Jrbrew are fine and safe, thank God.

There are places in Sth. WI that have had over 12 inches of rain since Saturday.

It's getting real soggy down there guys...watch your basements.

I think that we've totaled about 8" of rain here since Saturday--two yesterday in just half an hour.  Keeping an eye on the basement.

Three people were killed yesterday about 5 min. away from my house.  A woman and her child(2 yrs old) were waiting for a bus in flooded waters.  Lighting hit a transformmer and caused the power line to fall into the water near where they were standing.  They were electrocuted.  A Man tried to go to there aid and he was electrocuted as well and died.  A bus driver and passenger tried to help and they got a shock and were injured but not killed.  There was a fire truck right on the scene when it happened but they couldn't do anything to help until the power was shut off to the area.

Sat. and Sun are suppose to be dry sunny days.   Hopefully that will help let the water go down.

I am not sure whats worst, to much rain, or no rain.
People are dieing here too because of the heat. I am also afraid our well will run dry. Our creek down the road is dry.
We keep breaking records here. It hit 102 yesterday, there have been days we hit 104 degrees. The only thing we are getting is lighting storms. Its so dry here it would not take much for a fire to start. My biggest fear, we are surrounded by woods and there is only one way out of here.

It has to get better for all of us.

Some one needs to dail-up the man upstairs and tell him to send you about half of what we've got over the last month.
