Title: Bad News Alert!!! Prayers Needed....UPDATE Post by BarbaraD on Aug 18th, 2007, 9:25am Matt just called and Craig (Pop) is in surgery in Shreveport at this time. Matt got in last night to that news. Apparently Pop took a turn for the worse and they had to operate. For those of you who know Pop, you know he has other problems and surgery is risky at best. Matt is visably upset and needs all the prayers you have right now. He's supposed to call me as soon as he knows something and I'll keep you updated as I know something. They've called off the operation - seems the docs can't agree on what the hell is going on with Craig. Matt is fitt to be tied right now. He's about ready to take the whole VA hosp apart at the seams. I told him to get hold of the patient avocadate and the administer of the hosp. Anyone down there around Shreveport who can get over there and help him. I'm in bed with pneumonia right now and can't drive (timing sucks!). Craig is not doing good at this time..... Post by Maffumatt on Aug 19th, 2007, 8:54pm I'm home now but will be heading back down there after I drop some equipment off at the office and get some sleep. The VA system is a freaking nightmare. I have never been around more uncaring and less motivated Dr's and Staff in my life. For over 4 months he has been going to the VA. I told him it was a bad idea but he is hard headed and wouldn't listen. Chemo costs 1000 dollars a visit and he didn't want to eat up his savings. In that time they have done nothing. Not a God Damn thing other than lose his records twice and put him off. Every time he would go up there they would say the other Dr wanted to run this test or that test even though they had been done before and tell him that they would start the Chemo after the next visit. When he started going up there he weighed 175 lbs, he went up there to their ER Friday and was admitted for dehydration and malnutrition and weighes 138 lbs. He can barely eat broth now because the cancer has almost completely closed his throat. His last visit was last Tuesday. Want to know what they wanted to do? Send his home after giving him some fluids with an appointment two weeks down the road.. I threw a fucking fit. Socialized medicine anyone? |

Don't let up on them, insist on some action, get the doctors, and tell them you aren't leaving until they tell you something and get started. Jesus, they have no idea of what they're doing! You need to be your dad's advocate. Make sure you are in his file as medical POA. I had to take over medical care for a friend, when they started screwing him around, and I refuse to get off the phone, until I have a problem resolved. They don't understand, and yer right, standing around with their thumbs up their asses seems to be the thing they do best. Don't let up, and call me if you need to. All my best to your dad. I'll be thinking of him p.s. Get a copy of his medical records for you. I did that, and it helped when I caught them in mistakes, or even lies. They will advise you, educate you, talk to the doctor on your behalf (or tell you what to ask and where to apply pressure) and make Pop comfortable while he's going through all this hell. Most people think that Hospice is always a last resort...but it definately is not... not in Florida anyway. It's a confusing time and I'm sure you are running around in circles.....thinking you need to do something but not knowing what. I went through that with my mom. If you don't contact Hospice, go to the hospitals case manager and file a complaint. That usually get's some action. If you get loud enough, you'll find Risk Management at your feet. If none of this works, at least you won't end up feeling guilty because you'll know you did all that you could. I'm so sorry that this is happening to both of you. Love to you guys! |

When the time came to take my dad out of the hospital so that he could die at home (my mom had died 3 months earlier of a heart attack, totally unexpected and my dad went downhill fast after that, lived for 3 months), the not a very nice person aide told me that my dad would have to sign an AMA form; I grabbed the jerk and told him that my dad wasn't signing anything, that I would sign it and that no one had better tell my dad that he didn't have much time left. I took him home, took care of him, along with his sister and the last 3 months together with him brought my dad and I closer than we had ever been. He died peacefully in his sleep and I felt that I had taken care of my dad just as he had when I was a child, an experience that I wouldn't have traded for anything. It appears that the VA has not gotten any better and I shudder when I think of the care that some of our new war veterans are receiving-something has to be done. :-[ My heart goes out to you. |

The surgeon said he was too weak and wanted to get some more fluids and let him build his energy up The patient advocate is really doing his job. The advocate talked to the oncologist today and found out he was upset the they allowed the cancer to go that far and should have been treated 3 months ago. He had agreed that there was negligence, . They planned to do the surgery endoscopicly but that is now out of the question so they have to do it from the outside. I'm back in Kansas for now but may be heading back tomorrow depending on how it goes. Thanks everyone, the advice and contacts given have really helped. |

They are building him up for surgery so the feeding tube can be inserted. His cardiologist is at this particular hospital and the doctor who originally diagnosed the cancer, plus Matt's SIL is a nurse supervisor at the hospital (not in the section, Pops' is in, but all in all, she's there). So, things are looking better at this point. Will update as I get more info or Matt may post (he's a bit busy though, worrying about Pops and working too). 'darlin |

It really doesn't look good at this point. Matt was visabily upset and breaking down. They have to turn off Craig's pacemaker during the surgery and Craig has given orders that if his heart goes out that they're not to revive him. The chances are 50/50 of that happening. The doctors have said his cancer is terminal and Craig has decided not to have the Chemo or radiation. Prayers are needed badly right now. He's been moved to room 680 South Tower. The DON is Matt's brother's mother in law so Craig is getting really good nursing care - that's a plus. Matt is supposed to call back after the surgery. Will update when I know anything else. Craig is sleeping (morphine is wonderful for that) and not in pain. Matt is calm right now, but still upset. He's going to call as soon as he knows anything, but right now he's waiting and praying.
