Title: Anyone ever own a Volvo? Post by jimmers on Aug 16th, 2007, 10:38am I'm going to buy one for my Son. 1994 850 model. Most of the reviews say this a great car, but there are a few that were not happy with it. I did test drive it and it is pretty cool. Any input? Jimmers who is $2,500 poorer ;;D |

Title: Re: Anyone ever own a Volvo? Post by thomas on Aug 16th, 2007, 10:45am How many miles are on it, and did you get the service records with the car? |

Title: Re: Anyone ever own a Volvo? Post by Brewcrew on Aug 16th, 2007, 10:46am We had a 1981 240 DL 2-door from about 1986 to 1996. Great car - ate brake pads and exhaust systems for lunch, but extremely reliable, fun to drive, and built like a tank. I have a couple friend who bought an 850 and they loved 'em. For $2,500 I'd say you're making a pretty good move. |

Title: Re: Anyone ever own a Volvo? Post by thomas on Aug 16th, 2007, 10:54am A 240 is a whole different animal than an 850. How about that mileage and service records question? |

Title: Re: Anyone ever own a Volvo? Post by luveemom on Aug 16th, 2007, 11:06am I haven't owned that model, but I have owned a wagon, can't remember model number (topamax) bear with me here...and I currently own an XC90 I lease it...and I love it! It is a great car, never have a problem with.....safety is #1, and service is great....my other car we bought used, and it had 80,000 miles on it when we bought it.....so that says something. We also never had a problem with that one either..I say YES.. Good Luck Alicia |

Title: Re: Anyone ever own a Volvo? Post by jimmers on Aug 16th, 2007, 11:07am Actually the guy who is selling it to me is owns a volvo auto body repair shop(45 years). I am doing business with him for some video surrveillence equipment for his new shop. In the meantime we have become friends. This was his daughters car and has been maintained by him for the last 10 years. The mileage is 200K, which from what I've heard him and other people is nothing for these cars. There is a whole list of things that he has done to it lately from basic maintenence to some more involved things as well. In his words "Jim, every car that leaves here is in the best shape it can be, I go through everything before it leaves my lot" We have a lot of friends in common as well, so I know he's an honest guy. No, I was asking Jimmers. Well, if you know the guy well, I don't see any reason to be too worried. Just make sure the car has had it's timing belt replaced at the correct mileage intervals. Weak areas on this car are ; transmissions (automatic), suspension, and a/c. I'll be happy to answer any questions, I've been the gm of a foreign car repair shop for the last 9 years and the three years before that I worked at a Toyota and Volvo dealership. As far as the mileage, you can drive anything for however many miles you want, as long as you've got the money to make it happen. Catch my meaning there? |

I'd say that for the 240 series cars - they were workhorses. The 850 series made the 240 gurus cringe, just because Volvo changed so much that made the 240's a cult item (biggest complaint I heard was that it looked too much like a PONTIAC!). I'd go with your gut if he's a Volvo guy that you're buying from. We bought our 240 on the recommendation of a former boss who worshipped his 240 wagon. It was a good purchase and a great car, but not cheap to fix. |

Title: Re: Anyone ever own a Volvo? Post by sldrswyfe on Aug 16th, 2007, 3:11pm I have been looking into getting a Volvo myself. I always thought were nice looking. I have heard over and over they are terrific cars, from friends that are mechanics and some that are owners. |

Just depends on which ones you get. Stay away from S-80's and 1998 XC-70's. |

Title: Re: Anyone ever own a Volvo? Post by thomas on Aug 17th, 2007, 8:51am Oh yeah, how could I forget? Do NOT under any circumstances get an XC-90. |

Title: Re: Anyone ever own a Volvo? Post by Kirk on Aug 17th, 2007, 11:44am Carrie made me buy her Volvos for 25 years. The things are built like tanks. I find them uncomfortable, with bad handling. But then again. They are almost as safe as houses. YMMV [smiley=smokin.gif] |

Title: Re: Anyone ever own a Volvo? Post by Batch on Aug 17th, 2007, 6:32pm Volvo goats tend to get ugly long before they wear out. Make sure your son likes its looks... My '73 145 wagon made it to 250,000 and I had just had it ring & valved then repainted when #2 son decided to use it as a bulldozer to take down a 10" fir tree next to the driveway... He hit the tree 6" outside the left bumper shock absorber and the tree travel trough the engine compartment up to the fire wall absorbing energy all the way... The tree is still there... |
