I worked the Cinco de Augosto Festival at the Race Park yesterday and had a life altering day.

I was not a racist to begin with, but having the chance to work with and for hundreds of Hispanic/Latin American people in the backstage area gave me a rare opportunity to see firsthand that you get what you give! I was initially viewed with looks of suspicion and borderline hostility. After all I am an Anglo in uniform, with a badge and do not speak the common language of the day. In almost no time at all I noticed that the simple act of showing respect and giving smiles was repaid tenfold.

This could and should be a very long post, but as the day and night which still has not ended for me (with sleep) keep me from articulating further.

I now live in Texas...I will learn the language's of the region and I will never make stupid assumptions again!

The last time I was in Texas the language was still English, did I miss something in the last week?

Really Matt, try going to Boston and saying over and over that this ain't yer furst rodeo and see what language they think you are using ;;D. The key word was "region".

Used to live in Iowa myself, you are going to learn a new version there too.....wish I could make the Meet & Greet in Atlanta? but I have to work with spoiled rotten American rockers that weekend ::)

All the Hispanics in my family speak English, but they live in S California, must be a different region.......

thanks Jimi, did I say Mexican, Nani knows that I know and will get the point of the post. I think it's called tolerance and as I said .....

True, I may not be Mexican, but all of us Latinos share a warm and welcoming way about us. Once we accept you anyway. Cross us, and it's a whole different story. ;)

My mother in law was a racist, and spared no opportunity to badmouth Mexicans and Puerto Ricans to me. Hubby's first wife was Mexican and I am Chilean. I once asked Bob if he married us just to tick his mother off, LOL. He said, no, to him there was nothing better than to have a Latino family.

I learned a bit of Spanish few years ago. :) I don't recall that much of it, but I had lots of fun learning it. I'm planning to learn some more once I have graduated. :)

And yes, I know that the Spanish line should have question mark other way around and other things on it, but quess what? my computing skills fail me with those. :-[

Seeing as how I'm officially a "West Texan" its time you started learning my language Tim?! Your first lesson is dinner and you can guess what I'll feed you and bearing in mind you have just given smoking I just know you'll never start again when you know what you have to call a CIGARETTE from now on!! ;;D

I have really good friends in Amarillo one of whom was in the Sheriff's dept and had to learn Spanish - hearing him say "Buh-Waaay-uh-nuss Deee- asss" to me on the phone is one of the more painful memories I hold ;)
