Title: Dumb question #2. (For puter geeks) Post by chewy on Aug 1st, 2007, 7:20pm I just acquired a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. No clue what the username nor password is to boot up the OS. Is it possible to wipe the hard drive and install a fresh OS ? |

Title: Re: Dumb question #2. (For puter geeks) Post by the_old_man on Aug 1st, 2007, 7:59pm 1. Boot up the computer in "safe" mode. You do this by starting the computer and keep tapping the f8 key until it gives you a black and white menu. The first choice is "safe mode". Click on that and it will begin to boot. It will look a little funny because it's not loading any drivers. 2. Next log on as "administrator". 3. When you get to the desktop, go to "control panel", then choose "user accounts". 4. Choose "change an account". 5. Choose any account that says "password protected" except administrator. 6. Choose "remove password" 7. reboot your computer. If the only account that is password protected is the administrator account, then you're screwed. The Old Man |

Depending on the distro it maybe very hard to get in. Since this was smart criminal the file system maybe be encrypted too. If you want to see what is on the file system 9 if it isn't encripted) try booting with a Knoppix disc. (http://www.knoppix.net/) Of course the BIOS may be password protected so you can't boot from CD. In that case you will have to crack that first to even install another OS. Also the hard drive maybe password protected meaning you may have to change that too. When you have cleared any passwords you can finally install the OS of your choice. Paul |

Yes. Forget about cracking any passwords. Get an OS of your choice, Linux or not, and install over the existing OS. Make your own passwords. Yer done. |

Title: Re: Dumb question #2. (For puter geeks) Post by Kirk on Aug 1st, 2007, 10:28pm If the BIOS will let you boot from a CD. Put another OS on it. Either BSD, Linux, Solaris 10 or MS Windows XP Sp2. MS Vista won't work on it, so don't even try. MY preference since you didn't ask would be, Solaris 10 or Fedora 7 Linux. Have fun. Title: Re: Dumb question #2. (For puter geeks) Post by Kirk on Aug 3rd, 2007, 5:06am One of IBM's security tricks was to store passwords on a separate chip from the BIOS chip. Sounds like what your "friend" is planning on doing is soldering two wires onto two pins on that chip to a small circuitboard, that he will have attached to another computer through a serial (DB-9) port. run a small program to discover, and change the password. Its an old hack, but a fun one. The Thinkpad series are all like that. If on the other hand, he is really planning on shorting your motherboard. You'll have a doorstop. Have fun. Title: Re: Dumb question #2. (For puter geeks) Post by Paul98 on Aug 3rd, 2007, 6:02am Chew- Rule #1 Don't try to get into it with a ice pick #2, you can blitz the hard drive and install your own OS. If the bios is pass word protected (woill not post through the bios start up) then you can reset the bios but it means opening the puter and removing the CMOS battery and main battery. That I would leave for a tech. to do. It is possible to "hack" the windows password but I doubt anybody on this board has the skills to do so, so your best option is to reformat the HD and start fresh. -P. |
