Title: Re: Next years convention Post by cash5542 on Jul 16th, 2007, 1:32pm I'm really new here so my opnion may not count for much. I'm a supporter too, never been to convention, and don't have CH. I have really mixed feelings. I have heard many of you say heat triggers CH?? I'm new at this so I could be wrong. On the other hand my son went to college in Sarasota and it is really a neat little town, beautiful beaches, a shopping circle (St. Armands) that is hard to describe, outdoor with lots of unique restaurants and shops. It's easy to get around, traffic is pretty minimal, especially in summer. The airport is really nice and close by. Motels rates are good and plentiful. If this was being held sometime between Oct and April, there would be no question, it is a great place and I miss visiting however the heat is really pretty intense and the beautiful beaches are quite hot in July and Aug, not all that comfortable. Just some thoughts! |
||
Title: Re: Next years convention Post by 1stdonna on Jul 16th, 2007, 1:38pm And we have air conditioning too. Everywhere. The rates are low between Easter and Thanksgiving. April and September are the ideal months.......comfortable temperatures outdoors |

Deej and Stephanie are in there somewhere - Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska . . . . Not very cool in July, but at least it's centrally located. I highly recommend trying to get to DavCon if you've never been. Davenport Iowa in January seems a bit weird but it's a GREAT time. There are fun museums and casinos and good food and who cares if it's cold. Bey-ull (southerner that he is) actually came last year and rode in a convertible while the temp hovered in the 30's. Title: Re: Next years convention Post by 1stdonna on Jul 19th, 2007, 8:53pm Well, good grief people, we're talking about the shores of the Gulf of Mexico here. Of course we're talking about beaches........look at Siesta Key.....you can see it from the hotels in Sarasota. The Keys are long, thin barrier islands that run paralel to the main coast. You will find Anna Maria Island, Lido Key, Long Boat Key, St. Armonds Key, Siesta Key, Casey Key, Island of Venice, Manasota Key. Don Pedro Island and Boca Grande, any of which are just a Google away. It would really be a great place for a convention. City Island Park is in downtown Sarasota and hosts acitivities all summer, such as water sking competition, parasailing and numerous other competitions. There are boat tours which dolphins have adapted to and follow with wonderful "shows" of their abilities, and often get close enough to the boats to touch. We have the Ringling Museum......being the winter home of the Ringling Brothers Circus. The museum was the home of the founder and is now filled with artwork and sculptures.......gorgeous. Then, there are the off the road places that I have found which the usual traveler would never find. Lido beach is interesting......it's a nude beach that has been under scrutiny for years. There's Oscar Shearer Park......miles and acres of wild area with native creatures.......bob cats, aligators, etc. Featuring canoe trips, recreational vehicle sites, swimming, etc. Then, there's the night life. Wonderful comedy clubs, night clubs, etc. Great restaurants and simple sidewalk cafes. From expensive to unbelieveably economical. Look for Sarasota in Google search. Interested in golf? Not to worry!! We have just about all you could want. |

Title: Re: Next years convention Post by sandie99 on Jul 20th, 2007, 3:34am Ok, now. Florida - I'm happy to return it anytime. Kentucky - I have wanted to visit it for a long time. Other cities & states - I'm sure that I'll love them as well; I've been wanting to return to USA for a long, long time and once the place has been determined, I'll do my best to get there, finally. Norway - I've been there twice and I'll be happy to visit it again, it's a beatiful country. In case someone is still worried about the heat... COME TO FINLAND! ;;D In the WINTER! [smiley=laugh.gif] let's do it in Helsinki. HELCON has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? ;;D Then the devil pic will suit the t-shirts better than ever... [smiley=laugh.gif] Ok... I can see that the caffeine in my blood circulation is showing right now... ;;D Sanna ;;D ;;D ;;D |

Title: Re: Next years convention Post by rickyshot on Jul 20th, 2007, 12:57pm How about Canada. I am in Montreal the interesting part of Canada. Besides the French flair this city is brimming with activities in the summer. The shopping is unbelievable and for you guys out there the women are stunning. There is a casino, a mountain in the middle of the city and Montreal is a good walking city. Cafes galore withoutdoor eating and drinking. Tons of night clubs and trendy places. The food in this city cannot be beat and I have been to a lot of places. The weather in the summer is generally less hot than the south but it is humid. And we could get a heat wave. You never know. Montreal has one of the livilest downtowns in any major North American city I have seen. |

They're wonderful......ask Barb D, Nancy C, Barb G, Elaine, Jackie, Judy, Andy, Sailpappy, (that's where I met Kip and Judy).................and they're about 200 ft off the beach.......Englewood Beach. Great restaurants, Tiki bar, the public beach, little shops. All casual. All within walking distance. Plenty of never-used hurricane shelters are near by. |

Title: Re: Next years convention Post by catlind on Jul 21st, 2007, 1:39pm I'm all for the left coast for 08 and then Florida for 09; Yup it's been on the left coast at Vancouver in 02 and in Vegas the first one ever, but all in all they've been fairly evenly spaced around, east coast and west, and south, but the pacific northwest feels right for 08 - of course there's no personal bias there at all, just cause we are going there for holidays and I don't wanna miss another convention!!!!!!!! ;) No matter what we all want though, the proposals still have to be submitted, so if ANYONE wants to host the convention anywhere, get your proposal together and send it to OUCH so they can review and decide giving everyone the maximum amount of time to prepare so the maximum attendance can be gained :) BTW, did I mention Oregon for 08 hehe.... Shuttle? what are the rates for a hotel? will they allow fo reduced rates for a block of rooms? do they have have conference rooms? what prices are they willing to negotiate? THIS....and so much more go into choosing where the convention will be. someone willing to really go out of their way for 6 months prior to the convention is required. Honest...it is. The question has been asked..is there a bid form we are using? I seem to remember one from years past. Until we get direction, we can only continue to gather info, and keep lobbying our friends and family to jump on our bandwagon. It's a lead-pipe cinch, the CalOUCHers will have a much easier time getting here, rather than THERE! The weather is beautiful, it's cool at night, there are lot's of hotels, an international airport, and lot's to do. Kirk and I offered to host it, but then plans changed, and we weren't able to be available to attend to the details. Brian, Kim, Cathi, you'll do a fine job! Let's do the west coast, and have a cool climate, so Charlie doesn't have to wear his air conditioned suit. ;) If it's in Oregon/ Portland area, we'll be there! There's also a Crowne Plaza hotel (like the one in Dallas) in Lake Oswego, very near Portland. Beautiful hotel. Jonny, ever take the train? Nice relaxing ride. Get a sleeper car. Sherri if you are dead set on having the convention in a particular place. Submit a proposal for that location. This would entail a lot of legwork on your part as you would be committing to host the convention. That involves finding the various hotels that would accommodate our needs in a location preferably near the airport or at an airport with a shuttle to the hotel. The airport should be both, international and intercontinental. That is just for starters... if you are interested in hosting a convention please send an email to the ouch convention committee requesting further details of what is expected of the host. Convention@ouch-us.org or go to this link http://www.ouch-us.org/gatherings.htm After the proposal are submitted they will be voted on. Hope this helps, With warm regards, Tony |

Still, no matter where it is, if I can help in any way...please let me know. Thanks again Tony for explaining. Sherri :) |
