Title: Bad year for Pets... Post by BarbaraD on Jul 10th, 2007, 4:48pm My little Rudy (my mini pin) lost his eyesight. He's been walking a little funny, but I thought it was arthritis (he's 11 years old) and just thought the weather was aggraviating it. Sunday he was out in front of the house and we kept calling him. When he didn't come, the kids went to look for him and found him in the grass shaking. My son was visably upset when he brought him in. His eyes were completely white and he couldn't see anything. The vet said it was some long name that comes on dogs and that he "may" adjust to being blind. It's wait and see right now. He's walking around the house fairly well, but doesn't seem interested in eating or drinking. If I tap his water bowl he'll drink sometimes, but I have to hand feed him and then he doesn't seem really interested. I spent yesterday crying and just holding him. This morning I took him out in the yard and he wanted to go back up on the porch and actually climbed the steps, but was too close to the edge. When he got on the porch he went over to the edge and fell off. I caught him, but I guess that's out of the question now. He'll follow my voice on the ground, but still walks into things. In the house he hits a wall every now and then, but can pretty well feel his way from the bedroom to the kitchen. The vet said there was nothing we could have done had we caught it earlier, but it's so sad to see him this way. He's always been healthy and hyper and now he's just laying around and wanting me to hold him. Just needed to talk I guess. I've been pretty upset about this. He's been thru MY blindness with me and I guess now it's my turn to go thru it with him. My son said maybe we can train Homer to be a seeing eye dog for little Rudy. :D Right now all Homer wants to do is eat all the food...... Hugs BD |

Right now he is scared like anybody else would be :'( |

Title: Re: Bad year for Pets... Post by Karla on Jul 10th, 2007, 5:40pm Barb, I can really sympathize with you. My Black Lab Charlie is 7 and diagnosed blind due to a retna disease in both eyes. He walks into walls, chairs, but still manages to find his bed and his dish. He is so full of love and still has a lot of spunk for him. We just have to watch him closely. I refuse to put him to sleep. However the vet did suggest that we cancel our plans to move and said that it would be to hard on the dog at this stage to put him into a new envirenmemnt. I will keep you in my prayers as I pray for Charlie as well. |

I'm just sending my thoughts and prayers during this hard time. I remember the last days with my dog, just petting her and being with her. They will be some of the best memories. Charlotte |

Post by MR_FLOOR on Jul 10th, 2007, 9:47pm Hi Barb, Pretty ironic huh my pooch lost her sight completely also,she got the sight in 1 eye back for a short time but then lost it again.We tried and tried with meds but nothing worked.Now shes blind and she looks rather sickly.Shes lost 25 lbs. I'm trying to fatten her up shes gaining a little but she don't look good.I hope I don't have to put her down.Good luck to you Barb. Dave |

[smiley=hug.gif] I can only send some "well adjustment" vibes to Rudy and hope for the best. I know that guinea pigs and dogs are not the same, but my former guinea pig Olivia did adjust nicely, within time, when she lost her eye sight (naturally she had a lot smaller space to get used to...). She lived up to 7 years, which is great age for a guinea pig. :) Hugs, Sanna |

They have a real sense of loss and must adjust to this loss. All of the other senses are heightened. They eventually do make these allowances. But......it isn't easy for either of you. Sorry! Our friend's dog went blind at 11 and she lived to be 13. She looked like a cartoon character because she opened her eyes really wide all the time but, she did ok. Their little boy put it so well when it happened..... "Wrinkles' eyes have already gone to Heaven to look for a good place to live, but she's going to stay here for awhile." And she did. For two more years. Chin up, girl - let Rudy lead thru this adjustment period. Tell him Barly sends him gentle hugs. |

Title: Re: Bad year for Pets... Post by BarbaraD on Jul 14th, 2007, 9:13am He's not as bad as he was at first. He can find his way to the kitchen and his water bowl. I've started feeding him on a time schedule and he knows when it's time to eat and can find his way to the food bowl. His appetite has picked up. Outside he has a problem. He's so damn independent - and wants to do it "his" way. He can walk up and down the steps on the porch if I watch him real close and make sure it doesn't get too close to the edge (he fell off one time - I caught him). He gets in the grass and just stands there. But he's doing better out there. When he gets scared, he finds me and jumps up on me to pick him up. His little heart is usually beating ninety to nothing when this happens. But it's only been a week - he seems to be adjusting better each day. It just breaks my heart when he walks into a wall.
