After that I'm sure it will get better and then you can come back to harrass us once again.  ;)

Funny huh... even for chronics things get really bad ( well ok I gotta speak for my own chronicness i suppose) but then they go back to their own normal schedule and then they are easier to deal with.  I sleep a bit better for awhile, etc.  Just remember it's not always this awful, this out of control!!!

Rats.

Sorry Tony but hang tough and give this a try again. The worst thing that can happen is nothing:

               Dr. Wright’s Circulatory Technique:

I am not sure what mechanism is triggered by this but whatever it is, at least indirectly helps kill the pain. I do know that this technique has nothing to do with meditation, relaxation, or psychic ability. It is entirely physical and takes some work. It involves concentrating on trying to redirect a little circulation to the arms, hands, or legs. It can described as a conscious circulatory flexing. Increased circulation will result in a reddening and warming of the hands. Try to think of it as filling your hands with redirected blood. The important and difficult part is that it has to be done without interruption through the pain. Do not give up in frustration. It may not work on the first try. Every now and then it will work almost immediately. I lived for those moments. Try experimenting between attacks. You will find that it gets easier with practice.

I was given less than five minutes instruction in the use of method. The doctor, while placing his arm on his desk, showed me that he could slightly increase his arm and hand circulation. After several attempts, I was able to repeat this procedure and use it successfully. I have had about a 75% success rate shortening these attacks. My 20 minute attacks were often reduced to 10 minutes or less. Once proven that I had a chance to effectively deal with this horror, I always gave it a try as I had nothing to lose but pain.

Perhaps it will help if you think of it as trying to fill the arm as if it is were an empty vessel. I used to try to imagine I was pushing blood away from my head into my arm. Use your imagination. There is one man who wrote that his standing barefoot on a concrete floor shortened his attacks. This may be similar as it draws some circulation away from the head. Cold water, exercise, or anything affecting circulation, seems to be worth a try. My suggestion is to not let up immediately when the pain goes. Waiting a minute is probably a good idea. So long as you do not slack off, this has a chance of working.

This technique is very useful while waiting for medication to take effect or when none is available. It costs nothing, is non-invasive, and can be used just about anywhere. It is not a miracle but it helped me deal with this horror. It can be a bit exhausting but the success rate was good enough for me and a cluster headache sufferer will do just about anything to end the pain. It gives us a fighting chance.

"It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: 'And this, too, shall pass away.' How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction!"

I am chronic Tony, have been for over a decade...it sounds as if you are, Im not sure.

I do know it never completely stops, but there are the impossible times and then God willing the longer hours in between...it is so difficult to be positive and believe you will actually be able to enjoy a meal again or lay your head down again...but you will...no matter what your brain is saying.  It's also very hard to be "chipper" when you're sleep deprived and in so much inescaple pain.

Regarding Charlie's theory...to my UTTER AMAZEMENT...(sorry Charlie, I didn't  believe it was going to work for one second)...it worked on the first try for me.  And he is also accurate in saying, AT TIMES, not every one, you can instantaneously abbort the attack.  God, is that an amazing feeling.

Being that you have gone so long without using 02, I have had a seven year break and just got it withing the past month, you have heavily relied on your mind for pain control...I believe you will be able to successfully do this.

It has actually been "confusing" to re-learn depending on 02...I am learning to do both at the same time...and if Im lucky, spend alot less time using 02.  Whatever you do, the very best to you Tony.

So very sorry to all of you for being so scarce for the last week or so. A couple of cycles are overlapping and it is making life a little less pleasant than usual. I am chronic and am used to getting frequent hits each day but in the last few weeks I was getting hit more frequently and harder. My system was plumb worn out and a depression started to take it's toll... these two cycles overlapping is a real pain in the a$$.

I want to thank you all for your kind words of encouragement, prayers, vibes and phone calls. It means so very much to me. You have all been there and done that... there is so much weight in your words of encouragement.

I am using oxygen. (Thank you all my nagsome friends)

Although the oxygen is very helpful in aborting some of the attacks I noticed it doesn't always work and during these last couple weeks I've been getting hit very frequently and at times the o2 does nothing at all. Is this normal?

I hesitated saying anything about it at first because I do not want to discourage anyone from using o2. I use it as recommended; 15 lpm with a clustrmasx, for 15 minutes.

Again all of you thank you for your encouragement and well wishes.

with warm regards,
Tony

Tony there will always be hits that nothing works for and at best something will take the edge off it. It sucks but it's true.

I have found with O2 (and every abortive actually) that delaying starting using it makes it either take longer to kick in or not work depending on how long so my advice is go for the O2 at the first hint of a twinge.

Its not like Imi - you aren't going to "waste" it if it's only a shadow so just jump face first into that mask the minute you think that first "Oh Shit" okay?!

lots of love
Helen xxx

Sorry to hear you've been getting hit harder. I know the cycles within cycle all too well.
Had the same experiences with o2 not wanting to work.
Are you doing it right?

Reason I ask is, Jean told me awhile back that you are hyperventilating into the mask, you're not getting the full benefit, and if you are leaning forward, it is like a kink in a waterhose... you're not getting the full oxygen. Make sure you sit straight up and try to breathe it in normally. Best advice I can give.

Sending vibes. Been hoping to run into you on Skype.

Peace,
Carl
