I've been wondering what all the fuss was about. I haven't heard or seen one. We must live in a 17-year cicada-free zone.

Same here Bill.  Not a single eardrum piercing mating call to be heard.

I know there are different varieties that emerge on different cycles, some even every year. But I usually associate that sound with the dog days of summer, in August.

Hello Everyone:

Here I thought we were going to have a "scholarly" discussion of the role of the hypothalmus and circadian rhythms, and instead we're talking about how to prepare big, noisy insects.

SNICKER

Haven't heard one yet this year.

Wishing you PF days and nights,

Ray

It's pretty cool to see their exoskeleton stuck to the side of a tree after they've molted and left.

Go figure, I thought we only got those things here in Africa. They are quite pretty as bugs go but their irritation value is huge, they very easily spoil a lovely peaceful African sunset.

Last August Jim and I went to Omaha, Ne. to visit relatives.  When we went outside about sundown to have a glass of wine on their back deck, the noise was deafening.  Not knowing what it was (thought it was power lines about to explode)  I asked....   and was sorry for them and Cat who lives in Omaha too..

No Guiseppi, Calif. doesn't have thopse pesky noisemakers.  We just have the fruit fly.  ;;D

Sometimes ex has a lovely sound!  Just came back from Nova Scotia, and they don't hve them there, but going into Boston I ran into a swarm of them that made the windshield turn yellow!
