Title: Caller ID'ddddddddddddd Post by cootie on Jun 4th, 2007, 11:51pm Was wonderin if any of you high tech experts could explain this WIERD phone call we got late tonight........phone rang around 10:30 pm and that always scares me after a certain hour anyhow. I have an add in the paper for pups.......so this call was sum sort of service for a person that could not speak......they would type in words and a second party would receive them sumhow and repeat what the caller was saying words by words to us. Real strange and long drawn out process. This caller person wanted us to send photos of the pups via email......Brad said my camera was broke cuz it kinda is and it takes me TOOOO long to send photos thru my slow dialup not to mention this was one ODD type call. Then the call was interupted by sumone saying that this call was bein monitor'd and line bein tapped cuz of criminal content and or deception/fraud of this type of call service and did we want to terminate the call or continue. It was ended of course and it was way too strange to explain. OK....so what was up with that shit ??????? Strange daze Pam Brad was kinda freaked by it and said from now on I not tell anyone anything about where we live when they call about adds unless I KNOW he is there and goin to be there if they come !! |

Title: Re: Caller ID'ddddddddddddd Post by catlind on Jun 5th, 2007, 1:16am Pam it sounds to me like it was a teletype call. A deaf person uses the TTY (teletype) service in order to make phone calls and receive them on the other end through a special phone that types out what has been said; It requires a 3rd party to interpret the phone call if it isn't going to another teletype phone. As for the call being monitored, all TTY calls are monitored either through the government, since all government offices that have TTY phones are monitored, and also through other agencies because of the nature of the technology - monitored to ensure that what the person calling is saying, is in fact being transmitted exactly as the caller intends and/or says. Why it was criminal activity I can't say, but it sounds to me like there is a possibility that the agency may have had some troubles with their TTY service and maybe isn't licensed to offer that service any longer. Hope that helps! Cat |

Title: Re: Caller ID'ddddddddddddd Post by purpleydog on Jun 5th, 2007, 2:10am Pam, the call you got sounds like some we've gotten at work... there's a credit card scam running, where a deaf person calls, and has an interpreter, and wants some merchandise, in our case, very expensive power tools. They give you a credit card number, and want the product shipped somewhere, usually out of state. They send an email with the details, and want you to reply. By the time you send whatever it is, it's too late. Don't know if you do any credit card business, but this really brought up a warning flag. Be carefiul, and good luck. |

Title: Re: Caller ID'ddddddddddddd Post by cootie on Jun 5th, 2007, 1:31pm Thanks guys......never heard of that type of call or service before but I bet this person was possibly goin to try and purchase a pup via credit card or ask to and maybe they have been rippin people off and why THERE call was monitor'd or line tapped or sumthin cuz they were bein investigated wether they knew it or not. I don't do credit card sales anyhow....but that is probly what they were goin to ask and what they were plannin to try to do. It's hard to keep up with the scam's these days.....foiled again Pam |

Title: Re: Caller ID'ddddddddddddd Post by aubmari on Jun 5th, 2007, 3:28pm I work in customer service over the phone and we get calls like this all of the time but they always announce who they are and what they are doing. Did they tell you what company they work for? We get several during the day at work. They are a little different. I wouldn't worry too much unless they weren't forthcoming with what company they were with. [smiley=twocents.gif] aubmari |
