Title: Sneaking veggies into foods... Post by taraann on Jun 2nd, 2007, 4:24pm as most kids do, my kids are going through a no veggie phase. well I shouldn't say NO veggies. They like carrots and corn and toni likes brocolli. But only a few bites. So tonight I used the handy chopper and chopped up an assortment of veggies to put in one of their favorite dinners (sloppy joe pie). I wonder if I'll succeed in sneaky it by them? Any votes? [smiley=laugh.gif] btw I am also using their sammie's fave meat (deer meat!) |

Title: Re: Sneaking veggies into foods... Post by taraann on Jun 2nd, 2007, 8:04pm Well it worked somewhat. They ate it with some arguement, not as bad as some nights. But when we do carrots I simmer them with margarine, a bit of brown sugar and honey. Soundslike I'm ruining healthy with sugar, but it's better than no carrots at all in my book! It's a phase it too shall pass! There was a time when Sammie refused to eat peanut butter. It was weird cause for years he would beg for pb even off the spoon! Most kids battle veggies anyhow, I just think the battle will wax and wane though the years, or so I hope! |

Title: Re: Sneaking veggies into foods... Post by Lotus on Jun 2nd, 2007, 8:10pm Great to hear it worked TaraAnn! I am making pie tonight too so let see if I can sneak some more veges into it your style :) Its not just kids either , my overgrown clusterhead refuses to eat pumpkin and eggplants, and this phase has lasted 30 years so far ! ::) |

Title: Re: Sneaking veggies into foods... Post by George_J on Jun 2nd, 2007, 9:02pm Funny how kids are all different. Mine never met a vegetable she didn't like. When she was two, we picked up a basket of tomatoes--kid ate four of them at one sitting, munching away on them as if they were apples. I always have to get two pounds of asparagus for the three of us, because she'll eat a pound by herself. Cucumbers, spinach, beets, squash, kale, broccoli, --all down the hatch. We can't keep olives in the house. They disappear. Not complaining, you understand. I guess I don't have any advice. Best, George |

This is bad? It's a sign of a healthy person....so is hating parsnips. People make fun of these two veggies for a reason. Everybody nods when they do. Ghastly stuff. Cabbage too Charlie |

Title: Re: Sneaking veggies into foods... Post by Paul98 on Jun 2nd, 2007, 9:27pm The only veggies I didn't like were nasty brussle sprouts. Always over cooked so they tasted burnt to me. [smiley=hurl.gif] Was never fond of rudabages either. Veggies for kids... small chopped and throw some cheeze or butter on them. and mix it with rice or corn. ;;D -P. |

Title: Re: Sneaking veggies into foods... Post by Gator on Jun 2nd, 2007, 10:17pm We have always tried to keep fresh fruits and veggies around for snacks. When my kids were young, you could set a plate of cut up veggies (bell pepper, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and cucumbers) alongside a plate of cookies and the veggies would disappear first every time. Even when they were going through the "no veggies" phase, it only pertained to certain cooked veggies. For instance, none of my kids cared for cooked carrots, but they would tear up a plate of fresh carrots. On days when we served those particular veggies, we also served fresh uncooked veggies. |

Title: Re: Sneaking veggies into foods... Post by Mosaicwench on Jun 2nd, 2007, 11:18pm My kid is one of those that will eat almost anything. He'll eat any kind of veggie but brussel sprouts. I sauteed up some swiss chard with a little butter and garlic when he was about 6 and I had to yell at him to save some for the rest of us! What 6 year old eats swiss chard?? I have an excellent autumn soup recipe that calls for both parsnips and rutabagas - it's called "cream of 7 root soup". It's amazing! |

Title: Re: Sneaking veggies into foods... Post by catlind on Jun 3rd, 2007, 12:03pm Let's here it for those who hate brussel sprouts! When I was a kid we HAD to eat at least 2. I've tried eating them leaf by leaf and choked trying to swallow them whole. To this day I will not allow brussel sprouts to be cooked in my house hehe. I've got a house full of picky eaters. My daughter will eat just about anything and all three boys (that includes the full grown one..) won't touch anything green. Only way to convince them is if it's raw, and then it's still a guess as to who will or won't eat them. Cat |

Title: Re: Sneaking veggies into foods... Post by taraann on Jun 4th, 2007, 7:07am Jeesh we got a lot of picky adults too ;) I love veggies esp raw. Put a veggie platter in front of me and I'm happy. Ooh and I love cabbage raw too. My kids do love fruit! They can't wait to have citrus trees in florida. They were in awe with my dad's tree's and being able to pick fruit for breakfast and snacks and fresh juice right out of the yard. How did the pie with the chopped up veggiis go lotus? |

Title: Re: Sneaking veggies into foods... Post by cynjeep89 on Jun 4th, 2007, 7:27am Poor brussel sprouts and carrots....they always get such a bad rap. I buy two containers of brussel sprouts and two bags of carrots every week....one container of sprouts and a bag of carrots for me and one container of sprouts and a bag of carrots for the dogs. The dogs think the veggies are better than any dog treat that I could buy. When the dogs were pups, I froze the carrots and then gave them to them to chew on.....helped big time with their teething and saved my furniture. I ate all veggies as a kid with the exception of lima beans. Thank goodness that phase has passed...love 'em now. And of course there is nothing like a fresh, red tomato right off the vine so Barb, you had better guard those plants really well!! |

Title: Re: Sneaking veggies into foods... Post by sandie99 on Jun 4th, 2007, 9:36am I've always eaten lots of fruits and berries and most of veggies. I love carrots so much that my friend joke that they're the reason my brown hair turned red... ;;D I must say that I understand those who dislike brussel sprouts; I'm not a fan either. I will happily eat all the other kind of veggies, but I've never liked those. Sanna |

Title: Re: Sneaking veggies into foods... Post by BMoneeTheMoneeMan on Jun 4th, 2007, 3:59pm Luckily my daughter eats just about everything. She doesnt like the brussel sprouts or spinich, but other than that, she like them all. When she was 2 and 3, she used to cry when we didn't give her squash. She loves squash. |

Title: Re: Sneaking veggies into foods... Post by AussieBrian on Jun 4th, 2007, 9:51pm But it can go the other way, too. For years I was driving/guiding a one-day adventure for tour for back-packers (at least 7 swims, rope-swing, rock-slide etc) and my lunch time monster barbeque included vegetarian patties so the vegans could at least have something off the hot-plate. Some chose not to indulge, their choice, but the others always thanked me profusely in that they weren't left simply to the bread and salads. The boss had to pack all the food for me one morning while I helped another driver change a wheel and when I got back in the evening I rounded on him for forgetting the vege-patties as it had embarressed me having already told the people they'd be there. "What vege-patties?" says he. I said, "The round patties for the vegetarians. They're very popular and part of the reason I get such good tips." He said, "Mate, they're pork." Now I'd never ever have done such a thing on purpose. I mean, some people can't eat meat (and pork of all things) but it just goes to show. |

I am happy to report that it was a great success. I managed to sneak all sort of veges into the pie by chopping them really small, I added heaps of carrots and beans and cabbages and celery too. The kids ate them fine but commented that " you pie tasted different today mum " ! 8) It was my overgrown clusterhead who sat there and picked out the celery pieces because he recognised them and didnt like them ! Go figure ! ::) Guess its easier to fool kids then CHers, they are smart! :P ;;D |

Title: Re: Sneaking veggies into foods... Post by sandie99 on Jun 5th, 2007, 2:17am I'm not that surprised that the pie trick works - it works with kids of all ages. Back at our housewarming the dish which got the most compliments was actually the quiche. I filled it with carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, leek, cellery and rutabaga. I bet that the boys were not aware of that one... ;;D Sanna |
