She is on her way to the hospital because her Potassium levels were critical.  The hospital could not reach her earlier and dispatched the police to see if they could find her.  She was told if she did not get back into the hospital she might not be alive in the morning.

I'll post more when I get more info.

They are a good source of Potassium but Helen can't keep them down. :(  I know the Dr. was reluctant to try and raise the Potassium the last time she was in because it causes the Calcium to drop (I think) and at the time they were more concerned with the Ca++ levels.

The very (off the bottom of the chart) low Potassium she has means she could go into cardiac arrest any time.  It is very, very serious.

Just heard from Helen and she sounds in better spirits.  They drew more bolld and have her on a heart monitor.  It will be a few hours before the tests come back and start treatment.  I do not envy her enduring the IV drips as they are very painful after hours.  Lets hope they can at least get her out of the danger zone tonight.

I'll hear from her tomorrow @ 5:30am and post more after.

Just spoke with Helen and she has been transfered to the critical care unit.  She is terrified.  They have started her on a liquid oral food suppliment and will start Potassium IV shortly.  This will be followed in a few days with Calcium drip.  ALL her blood readings are very bad.

I don't know why the Dr's keep letting it get this bad.  She knew this was coming on last week and they did not do anything about it.

I hope that in the next 24 hrs she will see some improvement with the food suppliment and K drip.

I live reasonably close to Helen. I'm relatively new to this site and I had no idea about her condition till I saw this thread.

I assume she is in the Queens Medical Center.

Let me know where she is and when she can have visiters and I'll pop over and see her.

Helen - I'm so worried about you, and I'm sending up all the  vibes and prayers I've got so that you get better soon!!!  I sure hope that these supplements and IVs will get the levels up soon!!  They really need to come up with some sort of longer-term solution, so it seems, since your body doesn't seem able to pick up the slack on this one!

Hang in there and know I'm pulling for you!!!

I got a call from Helen.  She sounded in better spirits this afternoon.  They have taken her off the Potassium drip and put her on Magneesium and Calcium (can't have the Potassium and Calcium together)

She is still hooked up to the heart monitor and isn't out of the woods yet but at least her spirits are better.

I talked with Helen this morning. She's back in a regular ward (I think Paul already said that), and I believe she said they let her eat some soup. She's scared as heck, but less so now that she's out of critical care.

I got to hear first-hand the story of the police - Heavy pounding on the door, scaring her witless. The thought of calling the police about it. Discovering it was the police.

That woman is simply amazing! Upbeat. Cheerful. Positive attitude.
