Title: Can anyone help me with Virus Protection Post by taraann on May 29th, 2007, 7:16am The free trial of Norton that came with my pc is up. In the past a bunch of you have been an enormous help to me with my pc lameness. So where else would I come with a pc question? ;;D I need FREE virus protection if that still exists. It did years ago [smiley=huh.gif] I'm pretty sure it was Svenn that gave me a link to a free virus site years ago but my memory sucks. So here I am! |

Title: Re: Can anyone help me with Virus Protection Post by Ray on May 29th, 2007, 1:40pm I agree with John, above! I use AVG on all of my windows PC's and even my Linux server! It is good, it is free, and it updates practically daily. With regards, Ray |

Title: Re: Can anyone help me with Virus Protection Post by Mark C on May 29th, 2007, 3:59pm I have been using Comodo (http://www.antivirus.comodo.com/) all year, so far so good. It is not as "bloated", i.e. such a memory hog as some others. Mark |

Title: Re: Can anyone help me with Virus Protection Post by purpleydog on May 29th, 2007, 8:53pm I've used avast for three years now, with absolutely no problems. It works in the background, and updates itself daily, or more than once daily, depending on whatever threats are currently making the rounds. http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html It's free, get the home edition. Very easy to install. You'll need to download your anti-virus, then go to your control panel, change/ remove programs, and uninstall everything listed by Symantec (Norton). Make sure you uninstall EVERYTHING by Symantec, they tend to try to get you to keep the auto update tool. Kill it. You'll need to reboot after uninstalling Norton. Disconnect from the internet, then install Avast, or what ever you choose. Register your download with Avast, they never ever send you email, except your register key. That's good for 15 months, I believe. Then, just renew it. Let me know if you have any questions! Also, beware of Norton (Symantec) programs, including anti-virus. Symantec keeps track of EVERYTHING you do on your machine, they keylog, they keep track of every website you visit, how often, how long you stay there, etc. They basically invade your machine when you use any of their programs, and find out your browsing habits, and keep track of them. Malware in disguise. McAfee is the same way. AVG isn't bad, I used it for a year, but switched to Avast for ease of use. |
