Title: Let's just say......
Post by BarbaraD on May 25th, 2007, 8:35am
"Let's Say I Break Into Your House.............."

A lady wrote the best letter in the Editorials in ages!!!
It explains things better than all the baloney you hear on TV.

Her point:
Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration.

Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely.

Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests:

Let's say I break into your house.

Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave.  But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors. I've done all the things you don't like to do.
I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house).

According to the protesters:
*       You are Required to let me stay in your house
*       You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan
*       You are Required to educate my kids
*       You are Required to Provide other benefits to me and to my family   (my husband will do all of your yard work because he is also    hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part).

If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be there.

It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself.
I'm a hard-working and honest person, except for well, you know, I did break into your house.

And what a deal it is for me!!!
I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior.

Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you to learn MY LANGUAGE!!!
so you can communicate with me.

Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America....if you agree, pass it on (in English). Share it if you see the value of it.

If not blow it off......... along with your future Social Security funds, and a lot of other things.

I like this.  It's spot on and I think everyone should send a copy to their representation at both the state and federal level along with a demand that action be taken to stop this nonsense.

I couldn't agree with you more. a small point to make though. If most people trace back their herritage, you would probably find out "you" yourself shouldn't be here!

Unfortunately, we did demand action.  The entire Congress and the President both made their decision earlier this week :  [smiley=bigtiny.gif]

How about a nice, heartfelt 'fuck you' from our elected officials.   :'(

Barbara,

While cute and folksy, the story is irrelevant to the debate. But, it is the kind of story that can really whoop up the xenophobes. "Something needs to be done......," the battle cry of the anti-imm's.

Used to be a time when the American spirit would have admired these young families who have overcame difficult journeys to find a place to work hard and raise a family - maybe offering their families something more than what they could have achieved in their homeland.

If I was a young person in Mexico or Honduras I'd be making my way north too - legally or illegally.

That was a very blanket statement you made and wouldn't hold up to facts.  Actually most of us who HAVE traced our heritage have found that our ancestors arrived here at Ellis Island legally.  Legally because they became naturalized citizens.  Paid their taxes, or were penalized for not doing so.

Most of US were born here, which makes us too, legal citizens of the US.

I'm with Barb on this.

What a mess it is. Republicans want cheap labor and Democrats like the idea of more likely Democratic voters.

Kill me now.

Well, the main difference being, most of our relatives came here legally.  And unless we want to send the American Indian back to whence they came originally, I have a better claim than most to be here.

And one more difference I see with "naturalized" citizens is that they've been "contributing" to OUR country for centuries instead of "taking" away from those who HAVE contributed.

If people would get their kids out of bed in the mornings and put them out in the fields (as most of us "older" people's parents did), we'd have a lot less juvenile deliquency and a lot less NEED for "guest workers".

But that's just MY opinion. Right now my 5 year old grandson is out on the tractor with his father... child abuse -- I don't think so..... yesterday I explained to him if he's gonna be a redneck - he's gonna HAVE one!

Actually, the story has everything to do with the debate as it is a perfect illustration of the problem.  Every nation has laws governing who can enter their country and how people are to go about entering.  Why should America's sovereignty be any less important?  If you enter the country illegally you have committed a crime, just as if you had broken into someone's house.  We are not anti-immigration.  We are anti-illegal immigration.  Since when does that make us xenophobes?

Used to be a time when the American spirit would have admired these young families who have overcame difficult journeys to find a place to work hard and raise a family - maybe offering their families something more than what they could have achieved in their homeland.

The American Spirit still celebrates those who go through the legal process to come to this country and become a productive, contributing member of American society.

If I was a young person in Mexico or Honduras I'd be making my way north too - legally or illegally.

And if you came here legally and became a productive member of American society, you would be welcomed with open arms.  If you came here illegally, I'd personally drive the bus that takes you back to where you came from.

Heres a crazy thought....

They say that if we kick all the illegals out of the country than we wouldn't have laborers to do the jobs...well, how many people do we have sitting on the unemployment lines that can't get jobs because they are taken up by illegals.  I say get rid of them, and start placing our unemployment line on the working line.

I don't have a problem with anyone wanting to better their life.....if they do it LEGALLY!!!  However, when you get here, speak the language of the land and get a job!

Lastly, to all the business owners who hire illegals, I say that first offense for being caught with illegal workers, take 25% of whatever that businesses annual income is.  Second offense, shut down the business and send the owner to jail.  The word would start getting out and people would stop hiring illegals and start looking to the unemployment line for workers.  Kill two birds with one stone.

I am in the military fighting for our country and the rights of our LEGAL citizens, not the illegals who come here and don't do a damn thing!

They already do that to most everyone.......it's called taxes.

I could get behind that one.
