Title: Trying to quit smoking.... Post by TonyG1 on May 24th, 2007, 10:02pm This is one of those times I'm glad to be a clusterhead with a understanding of insomnia ... trying to quit smoking and I'm taking a drug called Chantix (Nicotine agonist with a little bit of antagonist thrown in) One of the lovely side effects is insomnia .... No rest for the wicked Other than the no sleep thing (ever again it would seem) http://bestsmileys.com/sleeping/18.gif it does seem to curb the desire to smoke... Anyone else tried it ? Thanks, T. |

Title: Re: Trying to quit smoking.... Post by nani on May 24th, 2007, 10:50pm Yes, Tony...I tried it and it's been almost 4 months. :D It was my "magic pill". I didn't have insomnia, but it made me REALLY nauseous. I only took it for about 7 weeks, but it made a huge difference for me. It was the willpower I never had. Keep up the good work...it does get easier. Maybe it would help to take your second dose earlier? |

Title: Re: Trying to quit smoking.... Post by Ray on May 25th, 2007, 12:21am I've used chantix for about 3 weeks. It seemed to help with no ill effects. Going on 9 weeks now. I still crave the smokes sometimes, but the cravings pass in a couple of minutes. Wishing you PF days and nights, Ray |

Title: Re: Trying to quit smoking.... Post by medic1852 on May 25th, 2007, 9:26am Tony I took Chantix and have quit smoking it worked really well for me. The only major side effects that I experienced was heart burn. I had to take zantac with my chantix. I was also worried about stopping my chantix since it works on receptor sites in the brain. But I was able to stop the Chantix cold turkey and no ill effects were noticed. As for the insomnia I did not experience that. I did have vivid dreams every night. Good Luck Rodger |

Title: Re: Trying to quit smoking.... Post by KJ_Hall on May 25th, 2007, 10:20am I'm recently quit (6 months), but it was through a combination of the patch, Zyban, and changing the time patterns of when I lit up. In many topics, people mention smoking being a trigger for a cluster, but I can't agree with that. I've seen no change in the pattern or the intensity of my clusters since I quit. In any case, I quit for many reasons (including starting a family), and I hoped that it would help with the clusters, but it hasn't. Oh well..... :-/ KJ |

Title: Re: Trying to quit smoking.... Post by michael on May 25th, 2007, 2:52pm Go for it Tony I quite 10 weeks ago. The addiction will go fairly quickly. Make sure you know and break the habit. All those times, like first thing in the morning, after a meal, getting in the car. They are not the addiction, they are the habit. Learn yours and break them and it will become a lot easier. And most of all, believe you're a non smoker. YOU CAN DO IT I'm with you all the way. Mike |

Title: Re: Trying to quit smoking.... Post by TonyG1 on May 25th, 2007, 5:34pm Thanks All for the encouragement !!! You folks are the best and I truely mean that !! Thus far (two weeks into the Chantix) I've cut down from 1.5 packs to about 4 or maybe 5 smokes a day... it does work Went to the doc today and the BP is much better ... maybe I'll finally get to stop the verap (out of CH cycle right now) but doc wanted to keep me on verap because of BP -- Got some Lunesta to help with the sleep thing... so I'm good to go. Again, thank you all !!!! http://bestsmileys.com/drinking/10.gif |

Title: Re: Trying to quit smoking.... Post by kayarr on May 25th, 2007, 10:44pm You are doing fabulously! I quit a little over two years ago. My blood pressure went down almost immediately. My heart beats per minute went down 20 beats. I feel good and I have taken off any weight that happened due to the downturn in metabolic rate. It's worth it:) |
